AFL-CIO launches campaign to dispel Obama rumors

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/07/29/art.rumors.cnn.jpg caption="A new AFL-CIO mailer seeks to dispel continued false rumors about Obama."]

(CNN) - The nation's largest labor conglomerate says it's set to launch a major effort Tuesday to dispel ongoing rumors surrounding Barack Obama that continue to percolate more than 18 months after the Illinois senator launched his White House bid.

The organization is set to send out mailers to more than 600,000 union homes in crucial battleground states - including Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin - that directly address the false rumors that he is not a Christian, refuses to wear a flag pin on his lapel, and was not sworn into the Senate on the Bible.

It also beats back claims the Democratic presidential candidate was not born in America and refuses to put his hand on his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. (view the mailer [PDF])

A majority of AFL-CIO's membership is considered part of the working-class demographic - the key voting bloc that overwhelmingly supported Hillary Clinton in the prolonged Democratic primary race and is likely to play a key role in the battleground states this November.

The AFL-CIO is also sending out a second mailer that features testimonials for union workers in support of Obama's policies on job creation, health care reform, and worker's rights. (View the second mailer [PDF])

"The mailers are the leading edge of a massive campaign in August to clearly define Sen. Obama among millions of union voters and to contrast the policies and plans of Sen. Obama with those of Sen. [John] McCain," AFL-CIO spokesman Steve Smith said.

That massive campaign will include a large-scale mobilization effort in 24 states, targeting 13 million union voters. The organization will also deliver more than 1 million fliers touting Obama's record at work sites across the country in August.

I don't care if he's a Muslim, I'm just worried that he's going to spread his Aids around D.C.

Good. Let's have a campaign about ideas and not revisit the lying, swift-boating, deceitful campaigns of the past that elected the likes of George Bush. Malicious rumor-slinging demeans all candidates, insults voters, and poisons the process. The tactics of Karl Rove and Lee Atwater belong in history's Hall of Shame along with lynching and internment camps.

Thank God there is some intelligence left in america. The ads that McCain and his cohorts are running are just lies and smear tactics. They are as offensive as the Swift Boaters. By the way, why didn't the MSM, including CNN catch the Ad McCain is running with his picture and President McCain running down the side. Talk about taking a victory and arrogance, thisis McCain and his slimy cohorts!

If people want to nothing but smear Obama, they will be left with the biggest 'smear' of all: John McSame; who changes his position on EVERYTHING daily.

Of course the Republicans are going to continue to lie about Obama, they have no other choice but to LIE. They have done it over the last 7 years and still tell us LIES. Just like McShame is blaming Obama for high gas prices but at the same time speaks out of the other side of his mouth that the energy crisis should have been addressed 30 years ago. So that would have made Obama what 17 yo? Grandpa find your rocker and get the much needed rest.

What does Barack do during the playing of the NATIONAL ANTHEM?

He stands there like a doofus with his hands folded in front. There is a clip showing this.

And where is his ORIGINAL birth certificate? Why doesn't he just produce it? What is he hiding?

It is just shameful that money has to be spent to combat such lies. Half of the people sitting in church every time the door opens are not christians. If they were, on no uncertain terms would this be an issue.

Obama being a christian will not save America, the question to any one who wants to know is: "Are you a Christian?"

On Judgement day, we will not be asked anything about Obama or any other candidate. Everyone will have to answer for themselves. In the mean time, the best candidate for president of the US is Barack Obama. All those looking for a perfect man, seek Christ.

Obama and his choice for VP 08!!!

How about proving to us that Obama was a U.S. citizen at the time he made his 1981 trip to Pakistan and when he lived in Indonesia?

He has been a dual citizen of another country and therefore his loyalties and allegiance are in question.

He should not even be considered for POTUS

Real campaigns are for really experienced individuals. Senator Obama can talk the talk but does America want to RISK him not walking the walk? Last time we did that with someone inexperienced was 8 yrs ago.

He wouldn't have to defend himself if he didn't make so many mistakes... it's sad that this could be the future of the US.

You mean he is not a Muslim and sympathtic to terrorist! but his name is Barack Hussein Obama.. he has to be a terrorist..

It amazes me how ignorant and close minded the people in this country are. I guess we have the Repubs to thank for that.

Saw a great billboard the other day that said "Dont you want to keep America safe?" over a picture of the World Trade Center burning. And of course it said "Vote Republican"

In my definitition of christian, Obama is not one. Unless he believe in this verse:

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

He dispeals his hidden lies by answering the rumors, this makes him look like he is honest and telling the truth to most people, but not the ones WHO SEE RIGHT THROUGH HIM....................

Boy that $1.50 US Flag lapel pin from the 7-11 saved Osama in the one picture. What is the campaign going to do with the other problems, impose a Bible under Obama hand and over his heart? He is no more American than a mexican crossing the border illegally.

It is sad this needs to be done – but I'm glad these unions are addressing the lies that republicans have made up in their little heads.

I bet the Union doesn't mention that he changes position almost weekly now – depending on who he is speaking to, that his version of Change is simply to change his mind then deny it.
Obama is an empty suit and most Americans are starting to realize it. He has three times the money of McCain, 5 times the press coverage, in a year when Republicans should be hiding in caves and a cadaver could win against them and Obama cannot put this away.
Why? becasue America is quickly realizing there is no substance behind this guy – he is all talk and ego. We do not need or want that as Commander in Chief. We all believe change is good but lets have the right kind of change – not Obama's version – no real change there – just more pokitics as we know it.

Yes with the McCain whine about how much more "coverage" Obama gets he doesn't notice that the coverage is overwhelmingly negative and usually either trivial stuff blown up out of proportion by the constant media attention or often downright lies.
If McCain ever got his wish and the media started reporting the same way for his follies, "friends", corruption and constant missteps and flip/flops the campaigns wouldn't even be close.
As it is every time a story shows McCain for what he is you see it once or twice (usually not in many placces) then the only people that repeat it are the bloggers.
