AFL-CIO launches campaign to dispel Obama rumors

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/07/29/art.rumors.cnn.jpg caption="A new AFL-CIO mailer seeks to dispel continued false rumors about Obama."]

(CNN) - The nation's largest labor conglomerate says it's set to launch a major effort Tuesday to dispel ongoing rumors surrounding Barack Obama that continue to percolate more than 18 months after the Illinois senator launched his White House bid.

The organization is set to send out mailers to more than 600,000 union homes in crucial battleground states - including Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin - that directly address the false rumors that he is not a Christian, refuses to wear a flag pin on his lapel, and was not sworn into the Senate on the Bible.

It also beats back claims the Democratic presidential candidate was not born in America and refuses to put his hand on his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. (view the mailer [PDF])

A majority of AFL-CIO's membership is considered part of the working-class demographic - the key voting bloc that overwhelmingly supported Hillary Clinton in the prolonged Democratic primary race and is likely to play a key role in the battleground states this November.

The AFL-CIO is also sending out a second mailer that features testimonials for union workers in support of Obama's policies on job creation, health care reform, and worker's rights. (View the second mailer [PDF])

"The mailers are the leading edge of a massive campaign in August to clearly define Sen. Obama among millions of union voters and to contrast the policies and plans of Sen. Obama with those of Sen. [John] McCain," AFL-CIO spokesman Steve Smith said.

That massive campaign will include a large-scale mobilization effort in 24 states, targeting 13 million union voters. The organization will also deliver more than 1 million fliers touting Obama's record at work sites across the country in August.

The AFL-CIO is putting out this mailer that marginalizes Muslims – how telling that the next potential president's rabble is making it clear that being a Muslim and loving the Koran is a bad thing. I don't think this is going to help much with the Muslim vote, but who cares, according to the AFL-CIO, Muslims are to be swept under the rug until after the election. Obama needs to make his opposition to this hateful racist screed known very well and very loud and very immediately. He won't however, as he cannot be seen as Muslim or he will never win the Presidency. The racism that dominated his own campaign's methods will not be forgotten, win or lose.

Obama does not fit in my definition of christian, unless he believe in this verse:

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

If he believe all path can lead to God, then he is not a christian.

Also, a person is not a Christian if they don't believe Jesus is the Lord and Savior.

Claiming that Obama is not a christian as a rumor is not correct. It's a opinion depending on what their definition of a Christian. This goes with everything else.

GOOD. Sad we need to take time to stop the false rumors by those who can't or won't tell the truth and unfortunately some will believe those lies because they will not think for themselves. The republicans will say and do anything to fear people into not voting for TRUE CHANGE. Citizens of this great land vote democrate all the way (i.e. president , senate, house members) so we can get this country back.

I hope there aren't a lot of Union members who will choose to believe the lies even when they are confronted with the truth. There's too much at stake.

What else is new. The Unions have never supported a Republican
even though the Democrats gave them the shaft in enacting NAFTA.
A lot of good it will do them on this one too.
These are not rumors, they are facts. Deal with it Socialist Democrats.

Good, I am glad that someone will be addressing these rumors. Its scary how much misinformation and outright LIES are out there against Sen. Obama.

Reminds me of all the lies, rumors, hate and fear that Dr. King had surrounding him! I remember people saying he was a communist........... now they say Sen. Obama is a Muslim! Whatever the hate-and-fear-mongers of AM Radio say seems to be believed by gullible, ignorant people!

Um Obama does think you dont need to place your hand over your heart during the national anthem or pledge as seen in photos. The rules regarding when to place ones hand over there heart are clear and Obama is wrong on the issue. He on several occasions is clueless on amaerican protocol.

It is time the Republican party learns that the American people are not falling for the KARL ROVE SWIFT BOAT lies any longer and will do whatever it takes to fight the lies. If it takes every Union in the United States to get out the word that Mr. Obama is an upstanding GREAT American human being then so be it. It makes me proud to be a Union member... It will make me even prouder when Mr. Obama if finally sworn in as President of this United States...

ok here we go again you know its sad when a person has to defend
himself over and over again because people rather entertain rumors
than to admit that it is a new day in our american history that allow other races to have input in our country. its almost like certain nationalities are fitting to do certain jobs and when you dont stick
with the norm like basket ball players foot ball players waitress and
waiters may be a few doctors here and there and other professions
but not the president of the united states come on people wake up its
a new day and may be just may be other people have new ideas
and ideologies that might work. with what we just experience how
could it be any worst and you know now that some of the things bush
did were not rumors but fact that he and his administration decieved
the american people oh gosh but he's white right?
