AFL-CIO launches campaign to dispel Obama rumors

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/07/29/art.rumors.cnn.jpg caption="A new AFL-CIO mailer seeks to dispel continued false rumors about Obama."]

(CNN) - The nation's largest labor conglomerate says it's set to launch a major effort Tuesday to dispel ongoing rumors surrounding Barack Obama that continue to percolate more than 18 months after the Illinois senator launched his White House bid.

The organization is set to send out mailers to more than 600,000 union homes in crucial battleground states - including Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin - that directly address the false rumors that he is not a Christian, refuses to wear a flag pin on his lapel, and was not sworn into the Senate on the Bible.

It also beats back claims the Democratic presidential candidate was not born in America and refuses to put his hand on his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. (view the mailer [PDF])

A majority of AFL-CIO's membership is considered part of the working-class demographic - the key voting bloc that overwhelmingly supported Hillary Clinton in the prolonged Democratic primary race and is likely to play a key role in the battleground states this November.

The AFL-CIO is also sending out a second mailer that features testimonials for union workers in support of Obama's policies on job creation, health care reform, and worker's rights. (View the second mailer [PDF])

"The mailers are the leading edge of a massive campaign in August to clearly define Sen. Obama among millions of union voters and to contrast the policies and plans of Sen. Obama with those of Sen. [John] McCain," AFL-CIO spokesman Steve Smith said.

That massive campaign will include a large-scale mobilization effort in 24 states, targeting 13 million union voters. The organization will also deliver more than 1 million fliers touting Obama's record at work sites across the country in August.

I always say where there is smoke there is fire. So if AFL – CIO is denying something, there must be some truth in there somewhere.

Besides Obama is the riskier of the two candidates. I am afraid of his immature decisions and his hesitancy to go to war when everyone in Congress, the President and foreign leaders think we should.

Obama is a flipper of the worst kind.

Watch him try to resurrect the welfare queen industry. if you want someone to protect our values pick McCain, if you want some risky leader choose obama.

He lives in a state of denial about the surge..........................

It's a shame this is needed. But that's the nature of Republican politics: smear, smear, smear.

I guess it's more depressing that a candidate's religion would even be an issue for holding elected office. I don't think Jesus would approve of this hatred of other religions.

Good for the labor union! It's hard to stay ahead of the GOP "below the belt" ads and press releases....McCain's boast that he would run a "clean campaign" is settling into the toilet with the rest of his memory losses...:)

I am glad to see a group getting together to try and support senator Obama and get all of the crap that the supposedly honorable Mccain has dishonorably thrown at him like he said he wouldn't do in any campaign. It appears that Mccain will do anything to win this campaign, just like he seems to to be willing to go to any lengths in order to win and take over Iraq. These lame tactics and dishonesty are what made Hillary lose the primaries, so I hope that the American people will be smart enough to make the right choice when the overall election comes.

Instead of spending the many thousands of dollars this effort will take, why doesn't the Union spend it on improving the living conditions of some of it's poorer workers? Or better yet...spend it on food and housing in the "poor neighborhoods" that Obama supposedly worked so hard for.

Hmmm must be a bunch of men. The men in this country have had their head up obama butt for the whole campaign..

What in the world do they think obama will do for them. He spent 7 long years in the state senate of Illinois. Did not vote for anything, all he did was press the "present" button. Has spent almost four years in the US senate and has not voted more than any other senator except Tim Johnson who had a stroke. Now that the DNC jumped on board and anointed him as the god of the Democrat party and have almost appointed him as the candidate he starts to promise the whole world everything they ever wanted. Darn he better get his butt in gear and start doing something instead of PROMISING THE MOON.
