AFL-CIO launches campaign to dispel Obama rumors

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/07/29/art.rumors.cnn.jpg caption="A new AFL-CIO mailer seeks to dispel continued false rumors about Obama."]

(CNN) - The nation's largest labor conglomerate says it's set to launch a major effort Tuesday to dispel ongoing rumors surrounding Barack Obama that continue to percolate more than 18 months after the Illinois senator launched his White House bid.

The organization is set to send out mailers to more than 600,000 union homes in crucial battleground states - including Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin - that directly address the false rumors that he is not a Christian, refuses to wear a flag pin on his lapel, and was not sworn into the Senate on the Bible.

It also beats back claims the Democratic presidential candidate was not born in America and refuses to put his hand on his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. (view the mailer [PDF])

A majority of AFL-CIO's membership is considered part of the working-class demographic - the key voting bloc that overwhelmingly supported Hillary Clinton in the prolonged Democratic primary race and is likely to play a key role in the battleground states this November.

The AFL-CIO is also sending out a second mailer that features testimonials for union workers in support of Obama's policies on job creation, health care reform, and worker's rights. (View the second mailer [PDF])

"The mailers are the leading edge of a massive campaign in August to clearly define Sen. Obama among millions of union voters and to contrast the policies and plans of Sen. Obama with those of Sen. [John] McCain," AFL-CIO spokesman Steve Smith said.

That massive campaign will include a large-scale mobilization effort in 24 states, targeting 13 million union voters. The organization will also deliver more than 1 million fliers touting Obama's record at work sites across the country in August.

Kudos to the AFL-CIO! Both my parents were staunch supporters and members of this organization, and they would be proud that this organization continues to walk the walk.

I think it's a really good idea for Obama to stay above the fray and stay positive while McCain continues with negative attacks.

I think these mailings are a good idea to project a positive and truthful image of himself.

Great to see the union stepping up and helping to denounce the right-wing false accusations and propaganda. Facts will always outweigh smears and lies.

AWESOME idea! Whether he wins or loses, it would be great to know Obama did it on his own merits, instead of worrying about the impact of slanderous viral emails.

The unions turned their back on Hillary Clinton. Unions can now take a good long xxxx for themselves as far as I am concerned.

    RIP organized labor.

It is going to take a lot to battle the big oil million dollar backing of McCain. Thank you AFL-CIO. Everyone has to get on board the Obama train or America will left at the station with nothing and my grandchildren will be put into a military draft fighting for oil until the world is blown up. Go Obama!!!

  19. former republican white man from california for Obama

It really is very sad that we need to have all these anti rumor sites because the so called Republican party is running a campaign based on Fear, Hate and Lies. We need to get rid of these extreme right wing nut jobs that have taken over our party and bring it back to its original platform of financial conservatism. I have seen that Obama is much more to the center on most every issues than he is left. The thing i find the most impressive about him is that it does not matter if i am left or right he still feel both views should be respected and brought forth for meaningful debate, not just as clubs to beat each other over the head with!

Thank God !!!!! It's sad that President Obama has to continously explain himself over and over and over all these petty romors.. All the pondants and folks that are sitting on their couches, unable to drive their cars due to NO GAS, unable to buy the foods that they want to buy, unable to heat their homes in 97 days and unable to afford HEALTH insurance NEED to WAKE up and open their eyes.. McCain's not going to help you, he's going to make it worse for you... Open your eyes

  21. White Dude for Obama!

It's sad that Obama has to do this. Sad, Sad, sad.

My white couterparts that fall for this are not the brightest cookies in the bag. They are a few chips short of an Ahoy. A few leafs short of a flower. Had enough of Husseins(epic...shoutout to West Virginia) or whatever else.

They ain' put Dick Cheney through this many hoops and he shot his homeboy in the face.

  22. Disgraceful

It's sad that a mailer such as this has to go out to people. If people actually are swayed to vote for a candidate knowing this information, lunch box blue collar goons are even more stupid than I thought.

I love it this is a sign of God 's intervention, God says no body gets to the father but through me. God has anointed Obama to be the leader of the world and nobody can change that, since nothing can over turn God's decision .Now I can proudly say our next president is President Obama.

And here comes the right wing hatred for unions. Yes, they are not perfect and yes, they protect some incompetents but it's not like you can trust corporate America to take care of its workers.

It's ridiculous that such a mailer should even have to be sent out. Are some groups so desperate that they will spread such ridiculous lies?

  25. Curious

How much will all of this cost? In tough economic times like these, wouldn't it be wiser for the AFL-CIO to give the money back to the rank 'n file? Also, not all rank 'n file support Obama and his policies, and some are appalled that the union is spending their money this way
