CNN Poll of polls: McCain gains on Obama, trails by 3 points

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/08/01/art.mccain0801a.ap.jpg caption="McCain has cut Obama’s lead in half this week in the CNN Poll of polls."](CNN) - John McCain has chipped away at Barack Obama’s lead this week, the latest CNN poll of polls suggests.

CNN Election Center: View the latest state polls

Obama now holds a 3-point lead over McCain in CNN's average of national polls, 47 percent to 44 percent, down from the 5-point margin he held over the presumptive Republican nominee on Wednesday, and half his six-point margin at the beginning of the week in traditionally volatile summer polling.

The poll of polls includes the latest Gallup daily tracking poll, conducted July 29-31, that showed the two candidates tied at 44 percent after several days of back-and-forth between their campaigns over the McCain camp’s tough new anti-Obama ad, and accusations of racial politics on the trail.

“It appears that Obama received a temporary boost from his trip to Europe and the Middle East,” noted CNN Senior Political Researcher Alan Silverleib. “That boost has now faded, but the overall dynamics of the race have not. Obama is still in the lead — as he has been since clinching the Democratic nomination.”

In addition to the Gallup daily tracking poll, the CNN poll of polls also included a Pew poll conducted July 23-27, a USA Today/Gallup survey conducted July 25-27, and a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation conducted July 27-29. The CNN poll of polls does not have a margin of error.

Seen this bad movie before, if you complained about the last 8 tiring years then you will get a repeat encore with McCain for the upcoming 4 – 8 years.

If you vote for McCain, please DO NOT COMPLAIN on your way out of the theatre.

YOU HAD BEEN WARNED THAT THIS IS A SEQUAL of BUSH!!

Unbelieveable. The stupidity of the American people never ceases to amaze me. This country has been mortgaged to the Chinese to pay for two wars that no one can even define victory in. Energy prices are at all time high levels, while the oil companies roll in the record profits. Unemployment at a 4 year high. Foreclosures at an all time high. US auto manufacters losing billions. Our constitution being shredded. Members of this administration at all levels involved in (at best) shady activities. The gap between the haves and have nots wider than ever. The number of Americans without health care continuing to increase. Our standing in the world continuing to decline, and the list goes on and on
AND PEOPLE WANT MORE OF THE SAME???? The definition of stupidity- doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results

Well, polls have been wrong and can be wrong. There are a lot of people who are newly registered and do not own phone with land-lines so they are not polled.

    TO ALL THE OBAMA HATERS:

The BUSH/CHENEY LEGACY.......... $10 TRILLION IN DEBT OWED TO CHINA......THE SAUDIS AND DUBAI TO NAME A FEW!

A DEFICIT OF $490 BILLION FOR 2009....... NOT ADDING THE $80 BILLION FOR IRAQ!

BUSH/CHENEY SPENDING $1.38 BILLION A DAY IN IRAQ.........A WAR THAT WAS STARTED ON ......LIES! WHILE MILLIONS OF HARD-WORKING AMERICANS GO BANKRUPT BECAUSE THEY CAN NOT PAY THEIR MEDICAL BILLS!

AND........MCCAIN.....THE PROLIFE CANDIDATE'S LITTLE SONG ABOUT HIS FOREIGN POLICY.... "BOMB............BOMB............BOMB IRAN!"

HOW ABOUT THE DRILLING OFF SHORE????? THE GOP LYING AGAIN MAKING POOR AMERICANS THINK THAT IF THEY VOTE FOR MCCAIN OIL WILL BE $2 A GALLON!

NOPE............. WE WONT SEE THAT OIL FOR ABOUT 10YEARS! AND EXPERTS AGREE THAT AT MOST WE WILL HAVE ABOUT 16 MONTHS WORTH OF OIL!

BUT PEOPLE WILL BE FOOLED AGAIN AND AGAIN! THERE IS AN OLD SAYING "FOOL ME ONCE SHAME ON YOU, FOOL ME TWICE SHAME ON ME"

I VOTED FOR BUSH/CHENEY IN 2000........... THEIR PRESIDENCY HAS BEEN A COMPLETE FAILURE!

ARE YOU REALLY BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE 8YEARS AGO?

You mean, the Chosen One isn't annointed. Maybe people are waking up from the kool-aid induced dream. Not since Hitler has an entire segment of the population been as brainwashed as what I have seen with the liberal left.

I feel really, really sorry for this country should this Republican get elected into office. The same people who put Bush into office will vote McCain into office. I suppose they just don't know any better...or want to know any better.

The US is pretty much the laughingstock of the world due to the mess that this past presidency has gotten us into.

I wonder if those that voted for Bush can be proud of what they have put into the White House?

Vote McCain, More of the Same.

To Denny – True comment about PUMAs (unfortunately). They aren't real Democrats. They are a just a starry-eyed Hillary fan club. They have no interest in the future of this nation. And think by voting for McCain they are getting even with Obama. Ridiculous. And insane.

I do not understand what people see in McCain. This is not the man he presented himself to be in 2000. His thoughts don't go together, his campaign consists of lies, complaints about Obama, insulting him.
I watch and listen to McCain who must read what he wants to say. His says a few sentence ends with a put down or lie about Obama then smiles at the camera and does it over and over.
Gas tax.. break, he must thing we are all stupid.... off shore drilling that will change nothing for years but endanger our waters and food supplies...
I don't make over quarter million, so his threats of Obama raises taxes does nothing to me..

Putting Obama with 2 young blondes who have continued to mess up... that is not a race card...
He was a soldier, how could he have let the soldiers go over to Iraq without equippement... and protection

Maybe it's because people are slowly being turned off by Barack "Robin Hood" Obama. I still don't know who I'm voting for but I'm liking Obama less and less.

And here we go again with: "Who were these people that they polled?" "They didn't call me." "They only call people with landlines and all the young people only have cell phones." Blah, blah, blah.

How can Obama win? He can't possibly get better press than he has over the last month. Meanwhile the Bush era that McCain will extend continues to go down the crapper, and on the campaign trail all McCain is doing rumblin' stumblin' bumblin'. And he's gaining. On Nov. 1 he'll have a 10-point lead and an accident in his pants.

No matter who goes ahead in the polls the main stream media will try to make this race appear close so we will keep blogging and keep tuning in to watch this dog and pony show. As long as Barack talks about issues he will continue to expand his lead, but if he gets caught up in this back and forth his poll numbers will go down.

Jasmine- you couldn't be more wrong. Obama wouln't have gotten this far if he had been white. Their were plenty of experienced white guys to choose from and they all lost out early on. John Edwards is a prime example. Clinton was a strong contender but couldn't compete when 95% of blacks were voting for Obama because he was black. If Obama was not black he never would have gotten 95% of the black vote. Clinton would have gotten most of it due to her and her husbands work in the black communities and during Katrina. Wake up and get the facts straight.

    @Denny

"if you like the way things are going in America today, and are pleased with the way government works in Washington, then go ahead and vote for McCain."

What are you missing dude? DEMOCRATS HAVE OWNED the House and Senate for the last 2 years and look at how gasoline has skyrockted under their leadership. You want to continue the Democrats in control? That is ridiculous...

Obama has the qualities to be a great president. His differences are the problem.

His obstacle is some American people- who do not think they are racist- vote for people who look/act like them! They did that with Bush and look what we got. It is not surprising, they believed in an image that didn't exist. McCain as an honorable man- no longer exists.

People who continue to claim he is Muslim- is a cover up for being racist. They won't change, they just aren't truthful.

The more Obama is exposed to the Country, the more many will see his outstanding qualities.

  18. Tired of needless data

Didnt the news use to report on news, and not speculation?

    Im so sick of polls.

Just wait till the debates, after they have accepted their party's nominations.

Obama is gonna debate the floor with him.

As long as negative attack ads keep working, whoever is behind will keep trotting them out there. I think McCains gutter tactics, although closing the gap at the moment, will come back to bite him by election day. And these polls just don't reach a lot of people who will be voting in November.

How can all these people that say they are going to vote for Mccain not see that this will bring four more years of Bush. I think the attack ads that Mccain has about Obama are just pathectic. Why dont he make an add that talks about the issues that concern the amercian people here at home. Mccain will see in the end these are going to backfire on him and he sure does deserve it.

Wow Henry we have nuclear powered Aircraft! holy crap. Oh did those incidents involving nuclear power ships and such mean that they struck another ship? Congratulations you've shown how completely ignorant you are on the subject of Nuclear Power.

Like I said in a previous post that got nixed b/c it criticized obama:Yes you can Hope for change, but it does absolutely nothing to help your campaign if you don't show why you're a better canidate. Everyone get ready for whiplash when McCain wins...because there will be a lot of people out there wondering which beach they had their heads stuck in while their canidate lost.

Change without substance is status quo....No to O.
