Is McCain's 'Celeb' ad accurate?

Watch more on McCain’s claim that Obama would raise your electric bill.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign got a lot of attention last week for its ad that likens Barack Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

The ad calls Obama "the biggest celebrity in the world," but asks, "Is he ready to lead."

In addition to the flashy imagery, the ad also claims that Obama would raise taxes on electricity. But is that claim true? CNN's Josh Levs reports.

Yes, it's correct. Obama is a skilled orator who can hold a crowd spellbound. So what? So was Hitler.

All the republicans are doing this year, (and most other elections) is to lie around without a single idea of their own and wait until they can find something about Obama where they can go negative. McCain says he won't raise taxes but how are they going to fix the 1/2 TRILLION dollar deficit? It's impossible to cut other government spending by 1/2 trillion dollars but all they are interested in is trying to make a big deal of nothing. People who support that type of rhetoric should be explaining how they can fix the economy with deficits like this. If cutting taxes all the time helps stimulate the economy as they claim how come the economy is in such bad shape? They have been cutting taxes since Reagan and our economy keeps getting worse all of the time. What have they to show for these deficits? TEN TRILLION dollars in debt with over 200 BILLION dollars of interest paid out every year. IT”S THE DEFICITS STUPID…

Eight years ago McCain was a nice guy, someone I wanted to win the White House, now he has become a pig in politics. He is the reason we need someone like Obama, someone new. McCain has become more personal against Obama than any other Presidential candidate in American history. I now despise the pig. He does not deserve to be treated with the respect one should give a Presidential candidate or a war hero. His actions since he left the service leave a lot to be desired, starting with the Keating Five. I am also starting to despise those who support him. For the record, I have not voted for a Democratic President since I started voting, starting with Richard Nixon, but I will this time, and I am going to give him lots of money. It is time for change and McCain is demonstrating he is not the one to do it.

Yes – Obama is an arrogant rock star. He gave his speech in between two band concerts with free beer and food in Germany. Without the bands and free stuff I wonder how many people would have been there. Will he use the same technic at the football stadium in Denver.

If I may answer you question CNN. My answer is Yes...the claim is definitely true. Mccain actually took the thought right out of my head. I have been thinking that Obama was just an inexperience Image seeker executing the paris hilton celerity strategy for a while now. I'm happy to see that Mccain said it like it is!

Like all other ad attacks by McCain this ad is untrue. McCain has shown the American people who he really is by distorting the facts about Obama. Americans for the last 8 years have lived through Bush politics filled with lies and distortions. This is the same thing McCain offers: MORE OF THE SAME OLD, VERY OLD POLITICS!

"Did McCain scrub his own website to remove any references to himself as a celebrity?"

That is beside the point. McSame has NOTHING NEW to offer the American people and he's USING the notion of POW to play on peoples Patriotism.

If you don't vote for the POW then you are NOT a good person and DON'T love America. That's BS!!!

I have to turn off the TV everytime McSame is on the screen because McSame actually makes me physically ill to watch him.

It's great that Obama IS as popular as he is, because it appears that MOST EVERY ONE ON THE PLANET WANTS Obama and NOT McSame.

In the end, these types of 'Attack Ads', which by the way, McCain said he wouldn't do, have just shown the American Public that HE IS NO DIFFERENT THAT BUSH..........Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran.

We're not a stupid as they think we are/or we used to be.

We can no longer tollarate the OLD WHITE MEN in Washington.

Greate reporting here? Lets just make a question and call it a story. Can we report what the truth? Obama will repeal tax breaks for people making $200,000 and for the Oil indsustry. We have had growth over the last seven years and these tax breaks have served their purpose. To make the rich richer and give oil companies record profits. Guess what they have not made our economy better for the other 98% of us or lowered gas prices. McCain tax breaks = Bush tax breaks. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. It would help if CNN stopped acting like fox and give non stop covereage to tabloid issues while ignoring issues the American people face.

Heck no!...McCain is way more like Britney...but just not as popular!

    Britney Spears (CNN, 10/30/03):
CARLSON: A lot of entertainers have come out against the war in Iraq. Have you?
SPEARS: Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens.
CARLSON: Do you trust this president?
    SPEARS: Yes, I do.

John McCain (The Mike Gallgher Show, March 2008)
"No one has supported President Bush on Iraq more than I have."

    John McCain (MSNBC, 8/20/06):
GREGORY: Do you have confidence in the President and his national security team to lead the war at this stage?
MCCAIN: I do. I do. I have confidence in the President, and I believe that he is well aware of the severity of the situation.

Indeed McCain's ad is accurate...and Obama has brought it on himself.
McCain was more than vindicated with Obama 's comment "history has been waiting for him and this is the moment" – some arrogant uneducated peson would make such a statement one would think and a comment that sickens most Americans.
Obama is chicken to meet McCain at Town Hall Meetings becuase he'd look like a child and he knows it (which is a plus for him one must say).
Hey, I"m not for McCain either – they both are career Politicians which I believe should exist left.

  15. Common Sense!

You can discount most of the dribble from the McCain camp as just more half truths and twisted Obama comments. The GOP spin is dizzing and the outright lies dazzling.

Yes! It's definitely accurate. MSM and DNC launch Obambi starting with Oprah like a rock star, a celebrity. We all know in due time, rock stars, celebrities fade into oblivion. Famous for being famous, that's what Obambi is all about. Full of PLATITUDES, ZERO IN SUBSTANCE=OBAMBI.

Once again the Republicans are using the tactics of smear and fear to denigrate an opponent that has offered a new direction for the country. I hope the American people aren't dumb enough to fall for this shtick for the third time. We need change, NOW. Not name-calling. Keep it on the high road you promised, McCain!

    August 3, 2008 02:10 pm at 2:10 pm |

Mc Cain is DISGRUNTLED and jealous of Obama's youth and charisma. He wishes he had the crowd appeal of Obama. He accuses Obama of being like Paris and Britney in order to belittle and mock him. However, at the same time Mc Cain is SOLICITING THE ENDORSEMENT OF A REGGATON LATINO STAR IN ORDER TO WIN LATINO VOTES. At the same time Mc Cain is also BLASPHEMING AGAINST THE TORAH , by using Moses as a tool to smear Obama. Mc Cain is using the SAME STYLE OF LOW POLITICS with OVERT RACIAL AND SEXUAL UNDERTONES that was used against Harold Ford. Mc Cain IS OLD DIRTY POLITICS. A few months ago Mc Cain's campaign had a black monkey doll that was used as a MOCK AGAINST OBAMA, and also buttons of whether the white house should be painted black. Mc Cain campaign is just trying to PLAY DEFENSE to what they have started a few months ago.

Oh heck, yes, he's able to lead. He's able to lead us into the changes that we should have done years ago. How many millions of people voted for him in the primaries? How many people gave twenty or thirty dollars to his campaign? Its only the GOP that thinks we must be protected from everything they don't like. Quit with the negative campaigning and get back to the issues, McCain. Let the people decide in November. That's OUR job, remember?

Here's what Paris Hilton's mom, Kathy Hilton, has to say about McCain's ad:

""It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs," Kathy Hilton said in a short article posted on the liberal Huffington Post Web site. "And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next president of the United States."

    Yes it is.

Much adoration based on no merits.

The point is: These 2 celebs have notoriety just for being portrayed as important by the media- SAME GOES FOR OBAMA.

The Least qualified, accomplished and meritorious of ALL the great Democratic candidates, ended up being hyped into a superhero.

That is not what I want for my president.

this is absurd! the only people who can raise the electric bill is the electric company! how desperate is mccain?

The ad is a joke!! It's slimy and misleading... what we've come to expect from the Repuglican party. If the money used from raising taxes on electricity is used to develop new energy sources and used to pay down the national debt the Dubya and the Repuglicans have run up to a half trillion dollars, then we need to raise the taxes.

How else should be pay down the Dubya's national debt... level EXTRA taxes on the rich? Level a tax on Fortune 500 companies? Taxes were increased and the wealthy voluntarily helped finance previous wars our nation has been involved in...

This time Dubya has just borrowed the money and accepted NO responsibility to pay it off. Maybe the Democrats will find a responsible way to pay down Dubya's national debt, because LORD knows... the Republicans only know how to run up a national debt and not pay one down. Let's have McCain include THAT in his next TV ad.

The way I see it only 3 kinds of people would vote for McCain:
1 The Wealthy – they are not affected by todays cost of living.
2 Idiots- they are not wealthy and still voting for a man who is givin us 4 more years of the past 8.
    3. Racist- they know Obama is the BEST choice but wont vote for him because of his skin color so they would rather suffer another 4yrs- Pathetic!!
