Cheney not expected to attend GOP convention

A Cheney spokesperson said no decision has been made on the convention.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Will Vice President Cheney be a no-show at the Republican convention in Minnesota?

Republican officials say yes, citing a desire by Sen. John McCain's campaign to turn the page on the Bush-Cheney years. One GOP official told CNN there's a "mutual understanding" between Cheney's office and the McCain camp that he is "unlikely" to attend the convention.

A second Republican official said there are still "talks going on" between Cheney's office and the McCain camp and both sides are "still trying to work it out."

The conservative American Spectator first reported Monday Cheney, who has low national approval ratings but is still popular among conservatives, is not expected to attend the convention.

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers side-stepped a question about whether the Senator has invited Cheney, saying the campaign has "not announced the speakers or any details" about the convention at this point.

Cheney spokeswoman Megan Mitchell also told CNN the details for the convention are still in flux. "His schedule for next week has not even been set-up," Mitchell said, suggesting there has been no final decision on the convention.

    Physically distancing yourself from Cheney or Bush doesn't negate the fact that you agree with every single one of their failed policies that has gotten us to the economic, military and diplomatic nightmare we're in.

    You are in no way the McCain of 2000. Win at all costs, huh McCain?

    Could it be that the Republican Neo-Cons have finally gotten the message regarding how malignant this man really is? Doubtful. They will do everything they can to get us to forget the insanity of the Bush/Cheney years, clearly the lowest point in America's short history. On the other hand, maybe he just wants to stay under the rock he has been under for the past several months. Let him stay there with the rest of the vermin.

    Oh, say it ain't so!! Please have Dick Cheney at your convention. Give him a prime-time speaking slot.... Better yet, have him give the intro to McCain on the final night.

    We Obama supporters would GREATLY appreciate it!

    Yeah, McCain with the absolute worst attendance in Congress. Now that's leadership. I would rather listen to Cheney who has least done something, even though none of it is any good.

    Of course,..the republicans know ( but try to hide) the fact that Cheney is a greedy crook who should be in prison. He's made MILLIONS off Iraq in the expense of dying soldiers and leaving children to live the rest of their lives without a father or mother. Yet, he smiles and waves with pride. Republicans know this and this is why they are not putting him on the stage. Too risky and , sad that Americans continue to trust these republicans. WAKE UP, AMERICA!

    McCain needs to get a mental health checkup. Maybe Obama's push for help with veterans traumatic brain injuries will help McCain get some help. We all know there is something wrong with him but they haven't diagnosed it yet. McCain can't do anything right unless he has his lobbyist campaign staff right there to guide him or if he has a script to read from or pre-screened questions and answers.

    McCain = Bush/Cheney
