caption="The McCain campaign gave reporters this tire gauge Monday."]
PHILADELPHIA (CNN) - Mark Salter, a top adviser to John McCain, gleefully distributed tire pressure gauges to McCain’s traveling press corps on Monday morning, a sight gag meant to mock Barack Obama’s remark last week that “making sure your tires are properly inflated” could help conserve gasoline.
Before departing for Pennsylvania, Salter told the press on board McCain’s plane that campaign staffers had brought along copies of Obama’s energy plan for reporters to study during the trip. After takeoff, Salter re-emerged with his punch line, passing out the pressure gauges reading “Obama’s Energy Plan” to the journalists on the flight.
The Republican National Committee said McCain supporters in Michigan were planning to distribute the same gauges at Obama’s energy speech in Lansing today. McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis also e-mailed supporters, offering a tire pressure gauge in exchange for a donation of $25 or more.
Last month, McCain's campaign also gave reporters covering the presumptive Republican nominee as Barack Obama's traveling press pool traveled overseas with the Illinois Democrat a fake European press pass.
Earlier: McCain press passes go continental
The pass featured a shot of the Statue of Liberty in front of an American flag, and the words: "McCain Press Corps/JV Squad/Left Behind To Report in America." The back had a picture of a man sporting a beret and a neck scarf, standing in front of a silhouette of the Eiffel Tower and pouring a glass of wine.
UPDATE: The Obama campaign points out that McCain backers like Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as NASCAR, have promoted good tire maintenance as a way to manage fuel consumption.
More childish crap by McLoser. It is a proven fact that proper tire inflation helps gas mileage. It is not Obama's energy plan, just something that Joe Schmoe can do immediately, like using CF bulbs.
I used to respect McCain as a moderate republican. Any lingering respect just vanished. The man is nothing more than the typical repub attack dog now with no solutions, just attacks. I'm sure he was "proud" of this little gimmick, just like he was "proud" of the celeb commercial that was chocked full of lies. Disgusting.
Having properly inflated tires will provide 10% better mileage on average.
Compare that to the 2.5 cent tax savings/gallon proposed by McCain. This "savings" would come directly out of money to pay for infrastructure which is not only necessary but also produces jobs.
10 gallons of gas @ would produce a savings of 25cents will inflating tires properly could save up to $4.00.
Reducing gas consumption is one way to not only save money but also a way to reduce the cost of oil due to reduced demand.
Well, OBama wasn't saying that inflating our tires would solve the energy crises; so, once again his message was taken out of context.
The overall message is that we allllll have to take part, on some level in ameliorating the energy crises. We aren't as stupid as you think us to be, as you hope us to be.
Are these guys in highscholl still, really? No substance from this campaign just little juvenile responses. Very sad.
McCain, grow up. There is no solution in your humor.
YukYukYuk..What a laffer!
McCain's campaign is really hitting the low road and is totally engaged in silly season politics. We've seen this all before from the republican playbook.
Cast your vote for CHANGE.....Obama!!!!!!!!!!
How bad could it get? The McCain Camp must be real desperate… “Hey, let’s just poke fun of the competition instead of talking about the issues”.
To raise tire pressure a couple pds adds a mile or two, times millions of people doing it, is presented as just a small effort but none the less an effort in the right direction that makes a small positive difference. To open up off-shore drilling for some questionable small difference sometime in the future is also a small positive move, but when motivated by the desire to gain politically and to really patronize the oil companies, it isn't very impressive. The truth in both cases is that there isn't a lot gained but Obama presents it that way and McCain tries to get credit out of it. Take the deceptive rhetoric out of it and the truth is there.
Obama and Pelosi should meet in the swing states on the side of the road and test tire pressure to get votes.
Oh, but I guess that won't work, so borrow Hillary's ideas and make them your own.
Say no to the empty suit.
Still for Hill, but voting McCain!
.....that does help. It's been proven.
Seriously, this is just getting childish.
Is McCain's campaign staffed entirely by 13-year-olds? Are the American people really buying into this junior high prank garbage? I find it shocking that, with these kind of juvenile attacks, McCain's numbers are what they are.
Obama will lose.
Yeah, don't look at the idiot in the White House and the fact that John McSame wants to continue his policies. Look at the humorous things the GOP is saying about Barack–laugh your way to the polls, and vote fo the same idiotic administration you had before.
Brilliant–dirty politics are alive and well. Thanks Karl Rove, your legacy continues.
tire gauges!!! This is soooooooooo childish!!!!! Making fun and mocking every word that comes out of Obama's mouth. It make John Mccain look like he is the younger of the two men. In fact back to his days of being a child that doesn't know any better!!!!! I wish they could just lay out their plans for the future and let the people make their choice. This running down their opponent and only pointing out half truth and twisting words is unfair to the people who are trying to make the best choice for our country. It is so mind boggling!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes you NOT WANT TO VOTE AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much for McCain's vow to 'not run a negative campaign'
Typical, grasping at straws and making personal attacks due to lack of substance. Sad really
He is right about the pressure in our tires.
I work at an auto parts store and there are alot of MPG (miles per gallon) in properly inflated tires! Try it and see! Guranteed!
LOL!, yes... we can either drill for oil or use the Obama tire gauge, maybe even rig a sail on top our cars and trucks.
I find particularly insulting as a concerned citizen the mocking tone that has prevailed in the McCain campaign this past last month. As if it we didn't have enough problems and tragedies at home and abroad to be concerned with...
McShame camp is tooooooooo dam dumb to not know putting air in your tires does help, now we know just how clueless they really are.
If John McCain wins, the Democrats should shut him out for 4 years. Focus on sending Karl and his henchmen to jail instead.
We have gages that are electronic now. I see you are still behind time.
Let's all remember what Lieberman said about inflated tires:
"Lieberman is on record going as far back as 2001 touting the significant role tire efficiency can play in any plan to reduce the nation's dependency on foreign oil. In a 2001 press release arguing against exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the Senator said: "Increasing the fuel efficiency of replacement tires for our cars to the same level as those sold on new automobiles will save drivers $90 in fuel costs over the lifetime of the tires and will save the U.S. more than 70 times the amount of oil we might find in the Refuge."
McCain' campaign, same old politics, same lack of vision.
He was framed as one by Obama and His campaign to nullify what truths Bill was speaking about the qualifications of Obama. They tried to do it against McCain, then retracted their comments when the were caught.
Time and time again, if you say anything about Obama your deemed racist or ignorant on these boards.
The race card has been used as a guilt tool by the campaign to make you want to vote for Obama despite his lack of qualifications.
His feverent supporters (probably paid bloggers) are so disillusioned by this guys celebrity that anything he says or does is justified.
Like a bunch of sheep off to the slaughter.
And becuase America chose wrong in the primaries, we are going to have another Republican in the White House.
Good grief, can McCain get any more snide and petty? Let's hear something of substance from this annoying little gnome for a change!
