McCain, Hillary Clinton react to news of Edwards affair

(CNN) - John McCain was tight-lipped Friday afternoon when it came to answering any questions about former U.S. Senator and Democratic hopeful John Edwards's admittance to having an extramarital affair. Edwards acknowledged he had had an affair with a former aide in 2006 but denied being the father of her baby. McCain told reporters "I don't have any comment on that" during a press conference in Rogers, Arkansas.

In Nevada, New York Senator Hillary Clinton said her "thoughts and prayers are with the Edward's family today" when asked if she thought her party would suffer any repercussions because of the scandal. Senator Clinton held an impromptu press conference following a campaign event in Las Vegas for Barack Obama where the statement was made.

There's a reason McCain is tight lipped on the Edwards affair. McCain had affairs, left his wife whom was in a car accident while he was a POW, and married a very well-to-do woman. He is afraid that if the Republicans start pointing moral fingers, the fingers may come back to him. By the way, Gary Hart was one of his groomsmen....remember Donna Rice?

McCain BETTER keep his mouth shut on this since he married into millions by having an affair with Cindy while still with his first wife, announced the divorce on TV before telling her, married Cindy a month later...yet he still manages to lecture about "family values" !

Hillary, You are too KIND. You would be the nominee and our party would be electing you the next President if it wasn't for this idiot. Now it looks like we'll settle for McCain. How long as Obama known this news? South Carolina? When he had him behind him gettting his support. This whole thing just smells FISHY. Screw these guys, Hillary. FIGHT at the convention.

Small wonder McCain had no comment, since he has quite the history of adultery himself. In fact, he started seeing Cindy McCain while he was still married to his first wife.

McCain was tight lipped becaues he cheated on his first wife..........He's worried this will come up. I'l waiting for CNN to mention it. Why is everyone affriad to mention McCain cheated on his first wife.........?

McCain also had an affair while married to his first wife. That's why he said no comment.

Surprised he didn't say the surge would have prevented the affair.

I don't see why the Democratic Party will suffer as long as Edwards is not the VP candidate. We Americans have very short memory so wait a few years, Edwards will be as good as new.

Who cares about Hillary or Edwards? They are not running for anything anymore.

Why doesn't CNN report on John McCain's multiple affairs? Or the dumping of his first wife after she had the accident and he met the 24 year old beer hieress (his current wife Cindy).

Or is McCain somehow entitled and let off free because he was a POW and suffered?

John McCain is the one actually running for president now so his affairs are more newsworthy, if not as exciting (as Edwards is younger and it's hard to imagine how randy a younger McCain was).

Once again, we're all making a big deal out of a personal matter. This does not need to affect anyone outside of the Edwards family. Can the rest of us move back to the issues, please?

Look everybody is acting like this is big news. Well to me it is not. It may be good gossip at best. This is something him and his family must deal with in the privacy of their own home. Regular everyday people know that politicians are not above this kind of action. They tried to use Bill Clinton cheating ways against him and it did not work. Society in general praised men in general about their doggish ways. So America is not shocked that he denied it at first. It is no ones business but his and his family. We have other issues that is more news worthy than this gossip.

How could Hillary say anything when her own husband did worse than that??? Wouldnt that be calling the kettle black?

    August 8, 2008 09:07 pm at 9:07 pm |

I'm sorry to say it, but it's a good thing that John Edwards lost his bid for the nomination so badly.

What he did to his wife is horrible, and what he would have done to the Democratic Party had he actually won the nomination – with this hanging over his head – would have destroyed the chances of a Democrat winning the White House almost as badly as Barack Obama having sleazed off with it.

John Edwards knew when he was running that he had this horrible mistake hanging over his head.

But even worse, Barack Obama ran a sleazy campaign to take what he did not earn and does not deserve knowing full well that he has no record of accomplishments and that he is an infinitely weaker candidate than is Hillary Clinton.

By enabling this unknown, inexperienced and unprincipled neophyte, the leadership of the Democratic Party has totally failed us all.

    Disgraces all...

Yes CNN, let's give this full, non-stop coverage and ignore the Bush administrations constant illegal and unconstitutional actions. You people, as " journalists" should be ashamed at the lack of coverage given the astonishing abuses of this administration.

I hope the DNC has thoroughly checked out Obama because you never know what may be revealed. I don't trust him and maybe something like this may come out after he is officially selected the democratic candidate.

I wish the Edwards family success in getting this terrible mistake behind them. John Edwards is not the first and won't be the last to make such a mistake. As far as I am concerned, this is a personal thing for the Edwards family and the press should just leave them alone.

The media should be looking into Obama's past and maybe they will come up with something before the democrats make that mistake od officially making him their nominee at their convention. We don't want any surprises after the fact.

do you think obama knew the edwards situation was being exposed today and maybe thats another reason he went on vacation so he wouldn't have to answer any questions about it.

The only reason Mc??? had no comment, is because he has done it, I really don't think it is anybodies business what goes on in someone else's private lives.....
