A role reversal for McCain, Obama campaigns

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="While Barack Obama is on vacation, John McCain is hitting the campaign trail."]
(CNN) - It was a familiar scene the past couple of months: Barack Obama out on the campaign trail during the weekends while his, John McCain, was off the trail.

So call it a role reversal this weekend.

The Democrat’s presumptive presidential nominee is in Hawaii this weekend and all next week. So what’s on his agenda? Here’s what he said upon arrival in Hawaii Friday night: “I’m really looking forward to spending some time with my family, having a chance to see my grandma.”

Obama grew up in Hawaii and his grandmother and other relatives still live there. But while his plan for the week is some R and R, it’s a safe bet this could be sort of a working vacation for him.

Why? Because the Democratic National Convention kicks off in Denver two weeks from Monday, and Obama needs to start thinking about his nomination acceptance speech.

But there’s another reason. Obama has a big thing on his to do list before the start of the convention, and that’s pick a running mate.

McCain, meanwhile, is on the campaign trail all weekend. He’s in Las Vegas Saturday, to address the 87th annual convention of the Disabled American Veterans.

On Sunday, the Senator from Arizona will campaign in Erie, Pennsylvania. He’ll team up with Erie native Tom Ridge. The former Secretary of Homeland Security and former Pennsylvania Governor is considered to be in the running as a candidate as McCain’s running mate.

Asked by reporters Friday night about taking down time, McCain said even when he isn’t on the campaign trail, he’s still working hard on his campaign.

“What we try to do is take a day or two down. But it seems that when I do that, then they fill it up with briefings and prep and issues and meetings. Since our schedule is public. Last Saturday, ok that is a down day. Start out with meetings and it lasts all day long until the evening,” said the Republican’s presumptive presidential nominee.

This , as is so many CNN's political stories, is not a story. Pick a topic of substance, research the candidates position, present it truthfully, without slant and present it to your audience for discussion. The foolish filler is just that, foolish. With Obama out of town, you guys don't have anyone to bang on. You are left with the same old material, (talking points) supplied by the McCain campaign.

It would be interesting to see pictures of Mr. Obamas family that live in Hawaii. We know so little of his mothers side of the family.

Is there someone who cares whether yet another of the Democratic wannabe's who can't keep it zipped has a future in politics?

Talk about judgment! Clearly the Edwards sleaze behavior has been talked about since last fall, yet Barack gets photographed with this guy, gives him all kinds of press, attention, had him on the "short list" for VP.

What world to these Democratic operatives live in?? Finally there's nowhere to hide; Barack is off to Hawaii for a week and the Olympics are taking up an entire tv network. This is the safest time to saw off Mr. Edwards.

Edwards – what a coward! Running around hysterically – hiding in a men's room until is "saved" by hotel security. Then the self-serving "confession" and the Finance Chair who, oddly, decides to give the delicate couple a break by sending them across the country.

Money talks, we all know that. And Edwards has plenty of both.

So, Barry, another Dem colleague bites the dust. You need better judgment when choosing your friends.

I can't wait to see who he picks. And I do hope the Enquirer is out looking for an Obama Mama to tack on his tail. There is bound to be one out there.

Wow! McCain is so old. His birthday is coming up and he will be 72. I hope he can live through this long campaign. It must be taking one hell of a toll on the poor old codger.

John McCain needs to stay on the trial, he needs the experience, he might do better than "894" out of 899 as he did when at the navy academy if he understood.

I thing that is what obama does when he is facing heat, he leavs and runs. he takes the short way and waiting for good poling again.
what we want to now from his camp is wath him campiang is about, they say change buth wath kind of change, he Flip-Flops on economy, irag, nafta ,fisa, he votes for more than 130 times pressend.
he has no agenda no more because the withdraw plan from irag came from clinton 16 monds, obama said by the end off 2009 a 9 monds plan, so many things he agians now he is for, starts from withdraw plan on irag till offshore drilling.
to bad because the real idiea`s came from clinton on intrest rates, on healthcare obama stops in 1993 plan, on regulations of banking came from clinton. 99 of 100 idiea came from clinton he obama just agreed on it.(look for your self if you like at him org )

All the talk about potential running mates and what they can "do for the ticket." What I'd like to hear either candidate say is that they're looking for someone who is fully capable of spping into the Presidency if necessary.

I will, in all likliehood vote for Sen. Obama, but if Gov. Ridge is Sen. McCain's choice, he more than meets that standard

  17. Veteran for Obama

McCain = Bush with white hair

McCain may be a military veteran but he greatly exagerates his accomplishments. He is no better than the 4200 plus soldiers who have been killed and sacrificed their life at the expense of McCain himself. At least McCain survived and is able to walk around and tell lies and dirty jokes like he is doing. He is sick.

    Hillary is out as VP

I think the fact Obama stayed silent while Bill Clinton was tainted with the marginalizing minorities brush, Obama lost the moral authority to lead.

It does not matter who Obama picks now

You know, the truth is we don't need Obama anymore now that the U.S. and Iraq are agreeing to troop withdrawals and the price of crude oil is dropping quickly. The war in Iraq was his main thing and now it's effectively over.

So let's send Obama back to his Senate job and the rest of us can continue on as usual.

    PS–we don't need Hillary either.

I wish they all would go on vacation as well as the campaign UNTIL the convention and then just BI-weekly reports on the candidates and the campaigns. As it is now, on CNN they report the same story with basically the same "BEST POLITICAL TEAM ON THE BOOB TUBE" hour after hour til near exhaustion.

By the time it comes to the election i will be bored.

I think this is a great choice politically. Obama never saw his dad after the age of 2 and his mom died when he was in his 30's. Obama has no roots. Rev. Wright was a major influence and mentor. Visiting his grandparents and any other american relatives will tie him down to someone people are not necessarily afraid of. Maybe Michelle Obama has some relatives Obama could pretend to be close to. I think it would be great for america if obama won. The country would move towards socialism and terrorism would be treated softly, but maybe it would scare america into waking up. Abortion being turned over will raise a criminal generation from terrible mothers. Atleast we would dodge that bullet if Obama won.

I just hope he will enjoy his grandma and cling on to his dear wife's arm. When people begin to talk about morality and everything perfect like Obama, I would get suspicious. Besides Obama is at that age hence making McCain really old, been there done that and is ready for the challenge as President of the United States. The country is dying for some strong hands and a big heart to lead them back to those glory days.
