Book sales based on Edwards' mistress continue to soar

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="A book based on Edwards' mistress is soaring in book sales."](CNN) - Author Jay McInerney may have John Edwards to thank for a likely influx of book royalties.

His twenty-year old novel, based on the life of Edwards' mistress when she was a young adult, is soaring in sales rankings - so much so that the book's publisher has commissioned an additional 2,500 copies for print on Monday.

McInerney has said the book's main character, described as an "ostensibly jaded, cocaine-addled, sexually voracious 20-year old," was inspired by Rielle Hunter - the film producer who Edwards recently acknowledged having an affair with in 2006.

The book, about the New York singles scene amidst the excess of the 1980s, is now 299 on and 393 on Barnes& - moves of a couple hundred places in only a handful of days. Before news of the affair broke, the book was thousands of spots lower.

Edwards, the former presidential candidate and 2004 vice presidential candidate, said he had a brief affair with Rielle Hunter in 2006 when she was employed by his political action committee to make "webisodes" about his campaign.

Despite breathing new life into one of his novels, McInerney said earlier this week he is no fan of the former North Carolina senator.

"To say that he slept with her but he wasn't in love with her - that's not very chivalrous," the author told the New York Daily News. "He's trying to distance himself from her."

"I don't feel my questions have been answered with regard to Edwards," he also said. "It was a half-assed confession."

I think this is an issue, because Millions of dollars exchanged hands, and it either did by someone laundering it to hide where it was going, or it was done through campaign financing. This is why it's an issue.

Lieberman puts the Israel lobby first. McBush puts the Big oil Corporations first. Please let us have a change before we go another Trillion Dollars in debt and before another thousand young hero's die in Iraq for nothing.

It's funny that all the negative attention has gone to John Edwards, when it takes 2 to tango. What about this woman who chose to have an affair with a married man whose wife was fighting breast cancer...could you go any lower? I blame them both. My heart aches for Elizabeth, as a breast cancer survivor myself, I can't imagine how I would feel if I were in her devastating! People who find themselves on the threshold of deciding whether or not to go with their feelings, show the most selfish of atitudes, at the expense of the spouse, children, family and career....what a price to pay! I bet if he were asked today if it was worth it he would say no. I saw some news reports saying this woman had some negative things to say about Mrs. Edwards, I guess that maybe gave her a clear conscience to sleep with her husband. Please don't buy anything that will reward her for her actions.

SENSATIONALISM AT ITS FINEST! The media and journalists will do anything for a buck! They have no qualm about shreading a person's life ,family,or marriage,if it means they make a dollar. I think everyone aught to take pictures of these people with all of our new high tech phones,etc...and put their lives on the Youtube! Lets let them know how it feels to be on the receiving end of their money grabbing hypocracy. Maybe the media would seperate personal lives from public lives,as we do religion and the state. I have no need to know who Edwards is running around with or why. He is responsible for his own soul, and what acts he commits is between him and his Creator. When will we start examining our own lives, and leave judging others to God?

I do not believe the John Edwards needed to confess anything to anyone except Elizabeth. If he used campaign money to woo this woman, then he owes them.. and should repay... but I will never understand the people who think he owes them anything.
The question should not have been asked... he is blamed not only for being unfaithful to his wife and family, but for not telling the reporter... " Yeh... I screwed her"...
What would we be thinking of him now if he did that..????

This demonstrates the immaturity and gossip thriving country we live in. During economic times people complain about high gas prices, food prices and increases in basic expenses but still find funds to purchase a book about someone's personal life.

Fact, every human being has sex. Fact, over 40% of marriage end in divorce. Fact, women are more likely to cheat than men. Fact, at least 20% of marriages have at least one cheating partner. Fact, there is no correlation between fidelity and professional performance or efficiency.

Its time to grow up America, sex is a human factor of life and does not necessarily impact on ones ability to perform his or her job.

Why is all the emphasis on Edwards?.... I don't like what he did.... He is slime now in my book....but ... SO IS SHE .... It takes two, and another man is claiming the baby as his.....that means she has been quite active, in my mind.... Let the blame lie with both of them..... She is a big girl and capable of making better choices.....It is the baby I feel sorry for....With a role model like that for a mother.

Ok, democrats, let's not be hypocrites. I mean real democrats(not the fake puma hypocrites).

John Edwards had a disgusting affair while his wife suffers with cancer.

That is not our business but it goes to character. He used and abused hunter and elizabeth. They should stop protecting him. We as democrats should stop trying to protect Edwards because he showed a utter carelessness for the truth and the faith his voters put in him.

I only wish Elizabeth would come out and say that she didn't encourage him to run for president, even though she found him to be a liar and a cheat. If she did support his decision to run, knowing the facts than shame on her for her part in the deceit.

    RE: Chicago Chris,
Hillary didn't take the low road against Obama like her advisors wanted yet all I heard from the media and Obama supporters was that she was throwing the kitchen sink at Obummer. You said it yourself. I guess you would have to change strategies too if the media was slapping you with every accusation possible and the Obama campaign was playing the race card at every turn.
Real Democrats don't vote for phonies like Obama...not for the party...not ever! PUMA- growing stronger ever day!

Why in the world would anyone want to buy a book about a former candidate's personal life with his mistress. He has let down the American people for crying out loud people if you would not vote for him why give him the honor to make money on you buying his book. Souds like garbage. I feel so sorry for his wife and family. Maybe he will learn to keep his zipper up and concentrate on morale values in the American Household.

Vesper – I agree with Judgment – you don't pick an elected official based on morals, but on his or her ability to do the job they are elected to do. If we picked Presidents based on morals we would never pick a Christian, Jew or any of the other hundreds of religions in this country – why one simple reason. They could never advocate violence or the killing of another human being and therefore we would never be able to defend ourselves; we'd have to turn the other cheek time and again. So drop the holier than thou position – its not realistic.

Dear Nia – AZ by way of MN:

You didn't read the article. This book is a novel that was written 20 years ago. The author based his main character on Rielle Hunter. The book was never out of print...the publisher is just ordering more copies of it.

What is America's obsession with sex? Over 4,000 soldiers have been killed in a war that is unjust and more have been sent home with mental and physical wounds that will never heal.Where is the outrage about that? All we worry about is sex and shopping. The fact of the matter is John Edwards is a good person who will be judged by GOD not by those who think they are god.

At least his affair is not with young boys, male prostitutes, or in bathroom stalls. Besides I think McCains affair is much more interesting being that he is the one running fro president.
