Kerry launches site to fight Obama rumors

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Kerry’s PAC launched the site Wednesday."](CNN) - Four years after finding himself the target of a scathing campaign-year book from a conservative author during his own campaign, former Democratic presidential contender John Kerry is launching a Web site to discredit the writer’s latest work, which takes aim at 2008 presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

The move comes amid news “Obama Nation,” the latest book by author Jerome Corsi, has secured a berth atop New York Times best-seller list. Corsi previously co-wrote “Unfit for Command,” a book highly critical of Kerry’s military record during the Vietnam War.

Kerry’s new Web site, “Truth Fights Back” – which will be funded by the Massachusetts senator’s political action committee - resembles the “Fight the Smears” site Obama’s campaign launched earlier this year, and uses similar methods: a list of responses to existing rumors about the presumptive Democratic nominee, a form to report new attacks, and a request for supporters to add their names to an e-mail listserv that will direct activists on rapid response to future attacks on Obama and other Democratic candidates.

“We want people to know that truth, and that doesn't just mean the truth about the candidate being smeared, but also the truth about the smear machine,” says a message on the site. “We don't just want to ‘debunk’ rumors and smears; we want to show people what these smears are all about so they can recognize smears in the future. We want to educate people on why these are used and by whom.”

Kerry has expressed regret over his own response to attacks from Corsi and other critics during his own White House bid, telling reporters that he did not think he had responded swiftly or strongly enough.

"You can't just play defense against smears, pointing out how they aren't true,” said Kerry in a message to supporters Wednesday. “You've got to play offense, too, exposing the whole cynical game for what it is: an attempt to keep us from talking about the real issues and ultimately changing our country for the better.”

What a joke! Who cares what John Kerry has to say. He'll only hurt Obama in the end with some mis-speak or something, wait and see.

Many of the accusations made in the book claim to be unsubstantiated, misleading, or inaccurate according to the New York Times and Media Matters. The New York Times and Media Matters for America has also criticized the book as containing serious errors, omissions, and falsehoods.

According to the New York Times, "Almost exactly four years after that campaign began, Mr. Corsi has released a new attack book painting Senator Barack Obama, the Democrats’ presumed presidential nominee, as a stealth radical liberal who has tried to cover up “extensive connections to Islam” — Mr. Obama is Christian — and questioning whether his admitted experimentation with drugs in high school and college ever ceased."

It doesn't matter if the book is an out and out lie, people buy into B.S. every day.

This man wrote a book about John Kerry and Corsi wasn't even in the service let alone, Viet Nam. What a namsy pamsy.

Good job Senator! America got fed up with all these non sense fear and smears by the Corrupted Republican party. We all know that they are good at it and that's what they know, instead of going forward with the main issues this country needs. They are the losers and corrupted, failed continuation of the Mcsame, McBush, and McCheney's policy.

What a joke. Nevermind most of what the swiftboat guys said was true. Are you going to list the truths for The Messiah. He supports infanticide, most liberal senator in the US, has never accomplished anything besides writing books and giving scripted speeches.

You know, if the republicans put half as much energy into governing as they do into smearing, they wouldn't have proven themselves to be completely inept. They wouldn't be worrying about this election cycle. It seems their energy has been misplaced. Not this year – no more.

Just what we need - another "Let's lie and call it a Smear" site. But who knows - maybe Kerry will be able to find a REAL birth certificate of Obama/Soetoro's, and not the fake one on the Fight The Smears site.

When will they find the time to dispute facts??

Rumors are rumors. Democrats spread more of them than anyone.

You need to talk about facts Obama, not pie-in-the-sky name calling.

Of course most of these smears are coming from Sean Insanity and Rush Limpnuts. These are the two racist bigots I have ever seen. I can't believe people are so weak winded and fall for this crap.

This isn't how you fight the right-wing bully machine. You fight it by running TV ads that are ABOUT their guy: one in which he calls social security a disgrace, one in which he is shown supporting the Arizona bill that would end Affirmative Action in that state, one showing him calling for the forcible ejection of Russia from the G-8, etc.

Truth hurts.. Put some ice on it Bambi. Kerry still hasn't produced his 180 and still hasn't proven anything Corsi wrote about him was false.

Poor Barack Obama, so weak, so fragile, so endangered, everyone is out to get him. How many more ridiculous sites will be set up to fight supposed “smears”? Who will protect Mr. Obama from the big mean world?

Sadly, Mr. Obama and the O-DNC consider any discussion of Mr. Obama’s history to be a “smear”. Even the use of Mr. Obama’s legal middle name has been called a smear. We have been told time and again that we must not question Mr. Obama about his life prior to being selected by the DNC as THEIR nominee of choice.

It is imperative that we know everything about anyone who is running for President. President of the United States is the most important job on Earth and any candidate vying for the position must be fully vetted. Mr. Obama has been bizarrely secretive and obtuse about his life and this is what fuels “rumors”, if he were not so afraid to answer questions about himself, there would not be rumors. Calling each and every question and rumor a smear only makes Mr. Obama and his drones look as if they have something to hide.

Why doesn't the author write a book emphasizing the strength of McCain and his policies?

Megan from San Diego, until you read the book, careful who you call a liar! Now, if its John Kerry you're referring to, that's a liar!

It’s time that we stop all the bull and call it like it is. Senator McCain and his campaign has used RACE from the word go. Obama is perhaps the most popular and known person in the world yet McCain and his surrogates continue to tell us that he is UNKNOWN to the AMERICAN PEOPLE. We all know what is meant by these terms. He also does not have the experience and knowledge. His VALUES and BACKGROUIND are not that of the AMERICAN PEOPLE. McCain himself continues to use these racist code terms. We all know that it is not Obama’s white background they are referring to. To them it is his black background that does not qualify him to be president. Let us stop the bull and niceties and call it like it is.

    @ ARDEN
"Now there is some book that has been written about Sen. Obama which is nothing but lies"
You've finished the book already then?

"where does John McCain get off taking the role of the President...this is his responsibility not the Presidential candidates"
You realise the candidates were asked to comment on the situation?
It's also not a candidates job to take on the role of the President and go meet with world leaders prematurely.

    "President Bush is a moran,"
    Um nevermind.

Isn't it a shame that Obama has so many skeletons in his closet that he and his henchmen must form hitsquads to ward off any criticism.
