Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book."](CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Who are these people talking to? I don't care what establishment
politicos have to say about anything. Any chance that we can get back to the issues? This has become more and more like the goofiness that
goes on in 3rd world countries ... of which we will be joining soon enough! WHAT are your goals for America AND what SPECIFICALLY are you going to do to make things better for ALL Americans?

Kerry and Obama should take legal action against Corsi.
    Lying comes with a price.

the media is sick!!! They promote the image of THE ONE when their talking about Obama, and when someone points that out, they start complaining. No body is allowed to have any view about Obama except the one the media wants you to have. So conservatives in America, STAND UP for this book. It will be standing up for freedom of speech

I think the title... "Obama Nation" kind of funny, too. Great play on words.

So what's the big deal? Do the Obama-ites have no sense of humor? Are we now suppose to blame McCain for the contents of this book? CNN's Larry King interviewed the author of this book, and Corsi doesn't like either Obama or McCain, and said he is voting for one of the lesser known candidates.

Besides, what is written in the book is exactly what a lot of people are wondering about, but are afraid to ask. If anyone brings up any of these issues, the Obama-ites get nasty and crazy. They demand blind faith to Obama.

McSame should be "flippantly dismissed" as a candidate. He is flippantly too old to be president.

I don't really care about US elections that much but my feeling is Mccain is lying too much and he is setting himself up for faliure. God bless Obama in this one...John mccain knows these lies are helping him and he loves it...but I pray that no weapon formed against Obama shall prevail and may God give Obama favor to win....Mccain thinks Americans are fools and he is taking advantage of the fact that Americans are naive....George Bush gave him good notes...

As a veteran and someone who supported McCain in 2000, I become more and more disillusioned with his campaign by the day. I don't care who you are, Republican or Democrat, Left or Right, smear tactics and politics that appeal to the lowest common denominator have no place in a 21st century democracy.

I will venture to say this will go down in history on the level of the attacks against Andrew Jackson's wife. Shame on McCain for not repudiating these allegations that undermine the very principles our nation was founded on.

I voted Republican in 2000 and 2004. No more.

What did the people thought? A Republican nominee following the foot steps of his beloved Republican president would run a decent and honorable campaign. Those days are long gone. Today, Republicans preach morals to others like Democrats, Jesse Jackson, Barak Obama, and to the World; Vladamir Putin. Chinese president and Hugo Chavez

Whether he heard or not is relevant. What was so funny that he was laughing? Is that what he would do if (hell froze and) he was Pres.? Laugh without hearing the question? Please....and that's me giving him the benefit of the doubt.

i think if john McCain was sued fr defamation of cheractor, it might make a difference.
something has to happen. McCain is to sick and much to old and a bad temper to be any president. its really terrible when you have to discredit your opponent in order to try to win. that should be against the law.
    shame on those republicans.

Like I've said many times before, no matter who wins the Presidential election, America loses. This whole campaign is a lose \ lose situation.

Sue... I am surprised that Mary Matalin is touting Corsi's book. I can't stand her but thought she had a bit more integrity than that.

When General Clark made a 'objectionable' statement about McCains' service as a qualification for POTUS, his campaign jumped all over it. And that was a personal opinion. What if Obama had said "McCain should've had a sense of humor' then? You guys would be livid.

This is a defamatory compilation of rumors, outright proven lies (as proven by every major fact checking organization) and you're calling the campaign 'whiners' for hitting McCain for his comment ? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

  16. Clinton, no, wait, McCain Supporter

The Obama campaign could take a lesson from McCain: Lighten up!

I know you're all so delicate, and so wishing for opportunities to spew your righteous indignation, but REALLY, kids.

It just demonstrates that when a candidate has some REAL experience, as opposed to the MANUFACTURED experience of "playing president," he doesn't get excited about the least little thing.

Your ranting and raving will only cause even more people to buy the book, moron.

And some will believe it just because "thou protests TOO MUCH."

Of course, thankfully, it's too late now, you've gone and mouthed off so much that people will stand in line to get the "forbidden" book.

"In the 21st century nations do not invade other nations" John McCain

Sound like sound judgement, experience and knowledge of issues there huh RC?

Fact check here: Doing "non-partisan" checks doesn't work if you're only reading biased right-wing viewpoints and looking for faults. Look at your own candidate and you'll uncover much more skeletons than you could find with Obama.

Freedom of Speech does not include Fraud and other crimes.

    McCain won't comment–That is a Comment!!!!

Don't forget that McCain wasn't born in America and legally can't run for president. Military Bases are not included in the Constitutional requirement.

Mary Matalin is just another lying Republican wench in the vein of Ann Coulter. This smear the ugly and white supremacist Jerome Corsi who readily admits that he wants to do anything to discredit Obama. Corsi who has a Phd from Harvard is a closet bigot, white supremacist from Ohio. Corsi is a piece of garbage.

Maybe Barack should hire Jackson Browne's Attorney and GO AFTER THE AUTHOR ! ! !

Here's a perfect chance to prove your credibility in court.

Personally, I think it's nothing but noise from the Obama Camp.

Vote McCain in 2008 . . . (he doesn't have to go to court to prove his credibility).

  25. A Recovering Republican

Just what we want in a President - answers a question he didn't hear rather than ignoring it or asking that it be repeated. And now, he won't have a comment about it - so he is condoning it by not speaking out against. Just when I think he hit a new low, he out does himself.
