McCain camp denies Enquirer story, threatens lawsuit

ST. PAUL (CNN) - A senior adviser to John McCain’s campaign threatened a lawsuit against the National Enquirer Wednesday over “baseless attacks” in a cover story about Sarah Palin that included allegations of marital infidelity.

“The smearing of the Palin family must end,” said senior adviser Steve Schmidt. “The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Governor Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie.

“Governor Palin is the most popular governor in the country. She is a proven leader, an accomplished executive, a champion for ethics reform, and a fighter against corruption. The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.

He also said that “legal action will be considered with regard to this disgraceful smear.”

Over the past few days, the McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

the more hysteria you see from the left- the more you know that they are absolutly terrified of a strong republican woman! this is so much fun watching them make complete fools of themselves and destroying the dems in the bargain. the media ,such as campbell brown etc., are finally showing their true liberal stripes and losing all credibility. when this election is over and mccain and palin are in the white house, these liberal "reporters" will be lucky to find out if the president is even in washington, much less get any interviews ha!

TomfromIowa, why would McCain remove her from the ticket? Conservatives, including myself, think she is fantastic. I have followed her story for several months now and think she is the best choice for the position. This woman is the real deal, not some media packaged product. I'm excited about her political future and the sensible liberty loving beliefs that come with it.

It's too bad that when Republicans were smearing Hillary Clinton that they didn't remember the old saying "what goes round, comes round". They can dish it out but they can't take it.

Sex, lies and videotape – I guess they have to even the score – John Edwards did it as his wife battles cancer, while he was running for President and continued to lie bald faced. What could even come close to that?

How dare the McCain campaign belittle the accomplishments of Senator Barack Obama. This is just a Republican scandal to destroy the first black presidential nominee. It's racist to question Obama's experience. And what flat out bigotry to raise questions about Obama's business dealings, political affiliations and his bipartisan record. Racist! Racist racist racist. (See how this works everyone?) You are witnessing the key piece of the Palin package. Use a woman to paint the entire media as sexist in the hopes that woman will be dumb enough not to see through this obvious pandering. Rallying your party base might have worked. Grabbing PUMA's ten members probably worked. But this will not work. Eat your own mooseburgers GOP. Cause I've had ENOUGH!! Anyone but McCain '08!
