McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

Some people are attracted to a Palin ticket because they are hurting in the present and believe a so called Maverick / Evangelical candidates will stop their pain now. I think those people will be disappointed and disillusioned.

Mrs. Palin's current family crisis (pregnant daughter and newborn) is sure to have a psychological impact on her and the family.

It would depend in great if America wants to move on from the Cheney / Rove years.

I hope McCain, 72, will retire finally.

Umm, CNN, unfortunately, incredibly, Palin is no longer the presumptive Republican VP nominee. Heaven help us all.

so how come CNN cut her comments (not her pastor's) when she was speaking to her church that were just a little weird, by most standards? And how come no one is reporting the beliefs of that church, that the saved will come to Alaska to survive Armageddon? Most main stream protestants aren't really comfortable with speaking in tongues. This reflects very, very badly on McCain who would apparently rather win an election than ensure the security of the country in the event he doesn't survive the presidency.

She didn't get away with banning any books because the town rose up and put a stop to it. They also fought to keep Palin from firing the the highly respected librarian who opposed the ban. Palin was then forced to higher an administrator to run the town. Sure sounds like a bully to me.

Liberals are stupid. They don't understand that attacking a hockey mom with made up stories is only going to upset the American public.

Attacks on her family and rumors are not going to help the DNC...they only play to the natural american tendency to protect families.

You people are stupid..or maybe just ignorant. It takes having a family to understand family values.

You should all follow Obama's lead on this.

Palin DID ask books to be removed from the library....that is true.

The librarians refused and she did not press the issue, so yes, no books were banned...but she tried.

Give it up Obamamaniacs! Your lies won't discredit the star who is now outshining Obama with integrity and authenticity instead of phony stories! 🙂

McCain/Palin 08 for authentic reform and integrity! 🙂

I'm sorry to hear that someone thinks it's a good idea to publish misrepresentations of Palin's past. At the same time, as she and McCain have a tendency to distort the truth, it makes it very difficult for us voters to figure out which of the items we're hearing about are true, and which are false. When we can't trust the candidates to speak truthfully about their past ("bridge to nowhere", earmarks, "God wants the natural gas pipeline to be built", etc, etc) it calls into question even their denials.

Here's a suggestion. Tell the truth. Then the distortions and falsehoods found on the web and broadcast through the media will be easy to identify and debunk.

  10. McCain = 4 more years of the same...

Yeahhh.. she'll say, no books got banned, but in reality still fired someon over the fact that she couldn't, just like saying they sold a plane on e-bay, when it really got sold by a broker.. keep stretching the truth... And now we have REAL video of her saying questionable things in church.. lets keep digging. Oh yeah, she also switched religions 3 times, does she even know what faith she is?

What, no Obama fans on her trashing because there is proof that the crap about Palin is rumors and false. That's the problem with theObama fans, they just get on here and spew thier hate and lies just like they did against Hillary. Well it is all backfiring against you now. How would you all like the responsibility for at least half the reasons Obama is failing. the other half is what he does to himself.

  12. The Invasion

I think that people that will vote for McCain/Palin ticket honestly believe everything that comes form that camp. Almost like the invasion of Body Snatchers, they look human and sound human but they all think the same. They want 4 more years of the last 8 worst years under Bush. Republicans had an adminstration & republican held congress and did nothing to combat or prepare the problems we are facing now. They are plagarizing the "Change" banner NOW as their own. Wake up and smell the bull*&$, they are playing you like fools McCain has a 72 year old really think he gonna make it to 2nd term. You are voting Palin right into the Presidency under a false pretense. A 1 1/2 year governor from one of the most remote areas of the nation. Next are you going to vote a president from Guam?????

Some of them weren't even published in 1996? Jeez, some people will stop at nothing to prevent Palin from being the first female VP. Why is that?

yeah, but, she did call the local librarian and ask her if she would consider banning some books. the librarian told her "no", and that was the end of it. in other words, palin wanted to ban certain books ,but, couldn't get past cencorship laws, and she just wanted to see if the librarian would do it ,without a legal fight. palin's INTENT was to have books taken off the shelves, but, she knew that was against the law ,too.

It is sad that the dems have to stoop that low because they are behind.
There will much more of this happening by the dems. because Palin is so far ahead of either of them they don't know what else to do

If she would actually talk to reporters she could dispute these things herself instead of the campaign having to put out a memo.
