McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

This is what I find funny today.

The Obama camp is reported to be privately calling the ringleaders of the Liberal Left to try to reign in all you Obamabots from making these outrageous and ridiculous accusations, and at the same time Obama comes out and calls Sarah Palin a liar.

So what are the misled Children of the Corn to do...follow their orders...or follow the example set by their tin god.

    What a dilemma!!!

    My prediction is this:

You're all so inmature and undisciplined that you won't be able to stop yourselves, and so you'll remain the greatest tool the McCain Campaign has.

No amount of money could buy what you do for the Repuplican Party.

You all have my many thanks.

The thing is, there are more ignorant than educated people in this country (big thanks to decades of failed public education), and Palin appeals to the ignorant.

In the future this election will be talked about in these terms: "Remember when Palin and the old guy ran for President?".

I deeply respect John McCain for all he has done for this country, but his time is up, and at this point he is merely a stand-in, like an extra on the movie set.

The real person running for President of the United States in 2008 is Sarah Palin, and anyone who is at least half-way realisitc about it will have to ask; This woman has zero national or international experience, if she is in charge, who's in charge of her, telling her what to do?

The answer to that question is: Not the folks who will have their names on the ballot in less than 60 days.

Obama may not be the greatest pick, but at least you know that he is running his own show, and you know exactly what you are getting for your vote. If you vote for Palin, then reality will be stranger than fiction with a small circle of old white men pulling the strings of the Palin puppet.

Most of this would be cleared up if she gave an interview to the press.

Aware....seems like you are not aware that your both your candidates are both pathological liars. Now I know this country fell for this when Bush was elected....I only hope the American people are smarter than that now. When you are told what books you can read and cant...when you are told God was responsible for Iraq...(God doesnt make wars...people do.) Then you might regret your choice.

Let's hear more about Sarah Palin lies about how she fought against the bridge to nowhere, when in 1996 she is recorded on video saying she supported it, how she said she sold the governers jet on E-bay, but after three tries she sold it to a Republican crony at a loss.

Let's hear more about Sara Palin's ignorance, how she said today that Fannie May and Freddie Mac are funded by taxpayer money when they are, or were, not (they're being bailed out by taxpayer money as of today).

Lies and ignorance, the Republican staple All you Republican operatives out there are disgusting.

To all you people out there who are trying to decide, a warning. Sarah Palin is a Right Wing Religious facist extremist's dream. If McCain gets elected, I have a feeling these extremists will not allow him to complete his term so that they can get Sarah into the President's chair. Do you really want a speaks-in-tongues rabid creatonist running the country?

A poll is just a poll, it's not even real ..there are thousands of young voters who use cell phones, if they poll groups of young voter, it will put obama ahead by a mile ..i don't think we should pay too much attention to the poll.
what i think Americans people should pay attention to is Americans economy issues, and how many more truths is going to come out for the newest McCain cheer leader

She's a fake, Karl Rove trained robot. A true Republican, Rove bully who will do and say whatever, however that works at the moment and then deny it later. Wake up America–she's a flashy, flash in the pan without substance. Hillary is a woman WITH a platform, Sarah is a woman ON the platfrom. She has been called a WalMart woman-what an insult!!

I was wondering if President Bush has made any comments about Palin. Did I miss his endorsement? or did he choose not to stir the pot?

This is from the From Anchorage Daily News Sept. 4, 2008:

Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.

According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn't fully support her and had to go.

The more I read about her, the more I realize that this woman is crazy. Now she's a pentacostal nutjob.

To top it off this stewardess doesn't even know where the coffee is? i.e. she has no clue what Fannie Mae is.

I do not believe McCain/Palin. I suppose speaking in tongues is also not true Palin? Check out Anderson's blog. This woman is beyond scarey, she is an abomination. Better wake up America before it really is too late!

  14. Independent Thinker

Anyone who says they were for Hillary Clinton and are now voting for McCain/Palin: go ahead, be stupid, let yourself be fooled, told what to think and what to do with your body. A true Democrat, a true supporter of Hillary Clinton would never, NEVER, cast their precious vote for 4 more years of the previous 8. NEVER vote for the types of "reform" Palin has in mind. NEVER vote for hatemongers who value guns over a woman's well-being. Period.

As so many have said recently: the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

She didn't actually ban books; she just floated the idea of banning books, and tried to fire the librarian when she resisted.

It would behoove you, CNN, to make it clear why this rumor has gained some legs. There IS a factual basis for this, even if the details have been distorted.

Here's a thought. Why doesn't someone in the media ask Palin exactly why she threated to fire the librarian then. It's a valid question. Oh wait she's not doing interviews. Maybe Charlie Gibson will ask her. He loves these kind of flag pin-ish stories if I recall correctly.

I would suggest that Palin go to the non-fiction section and study up!

We haven't seen fear yet wait for 4 more years of Bush economics bailling out the rich of the riches while the working man and women lose their 401 's, home values decrease, local taxes sky rocket because funding cuts from the fedrael goverment, and 10 billion a month oil war.

    Go Obama / Biden 08

Yes Sarah Palin is the almighty ruler. God told her to fight the Iraqi's, ban books, and ban abortion. This is exactly what we DONT need in the white house.

As for the polls, the electoral map hasnt changed yet and Obama is doing what he needs by campaigning in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Virginia might be McCain's but thats an area where Biden really needs to hurt.

Polls wont mean anything until the debates. After that if Republicans still win then Americans should truly be ashamed of themselves.

There is nothing wrong with banning books that you don't want the children to read. It just shows that Sarah and John are willing to do the Lord's work and stop the perversion of our children. Welcome to the party Hilary fans!

I praise God for the way democrats have been handling this campaign across the board, from the media to the individuals who subscribe to the godless Democratic Party. The media, and the Democratic Party is a mockery of everything that is right. With perfection, the democrats are succeeding at alienating millions of Americans, at a time when they need them the most. When you have no cause on which to stand that can stand up against the elements of time, and truth, you can only resort to demean, ridicule, slander, and thus raise your opponent far above you. God bless America, and the campaign of John McCain and Sarah Palin.

I find it fascinating that so many commenters on this article managed to ignore its actual content in favor of blasting someone they disagree with.

Palin never had any books banned. The article debunks that myth and says its false. Several non-partisan sources have also shot this rumor down.

Hey Palin-haters, next time read the article before commenting on it!

False statement by Obama and the Obama press.
Sarah Palin did make positive statements about getting money for the bridge (10/26/06) but was concerned when the cost ballooned from $223 million to over $400 million. As for the money. . There is zero evidence that the $223 million that was removed from the earmark process made it to Alaska. This is just common sense in that if the money is removed, it is removed and it is just sloppy journalism for the main stream media to confuse the two.
It also looks like the mayor of Ketchikan has an axe to grind against Sarah Palin. It is obvious that if the bridge were built, whatever land and or businesses he owns would be more valuable so that has to be considered.
All in all there was no flip-flop. She originally stated, when running for governor that she was concerned about possible cost increases (the state would have had to cover the overruns). When the cost increases materialized, she killed it. The earmark main earmark money never came to Alaska and the money that did come was from an earlier earmark from before she became governor.
Sarah Palin is a true guiding light caught in the shark infested waters of the left wing obama press.
