McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

Be careful to the words "currently on the payroll." The next question should be, well when were there registered lobbyists on the payroll? The ones who are no l onger on the payroll, what is their role currently in the campaign? What groups are they lobbyists for?

Don't let slippery words take you down a path that leads to nowhere…

Pailin…" I put that on eBay" Which was true, and she left that thought out there for us to finish the thought…that it sold there. But it didn't. We now know the rest of the story.

Pailin…"I said no thank you to the bridge to nowhere". Which is true, and she left the thought out there for us to believe, she said no to it from the beginning…We now know the rest of the story.

There is some redemption in this story if it turns out to be false...but McCain and Palin need to take heed from nursery school books re: crying wolf...

If the Republicans spent less time crucifying people and ran a transparent fact filled campaign…whoops…i got a little carried away…if…pishaw…

When can we expect to hear Palin answer some questions for herself? The American people deserve to know for whom they are casting their vote.

Bull, she tried to ban the books, and fire the Librarian, but the town would not let her! The Republicans simply will not and can not be HONEST. Liars!

  5. No Hillary = No Obama

This is surely a Presidential election of irony and it's not over yet. I think the universe is saying, "Americans have some explaining to do." No woman or Black in 220 years? Not this time. Hillary came along and was tossed from the garden, ripped apart and discarded. She could have been saved by messiah Obama, but he turned away in glee. The universe was not pleased. Again, another chance is given and her name shall be called Sarah. So, Americans search your souls, search your hearts – which one will it be?

I am pretty peeved at the media's caving in to Ms. Palin's lack of availability for intereviews. I believe we are entitled to see this V.P. candidate answer some questions in an unscripted format.

Wow...... the McCain people are really quick to defend. Personally, I find his choosing of a mother of 5 hypocritical since for as long as I have been alive (a while now) its been the GOP wanting to keep the "women in the kitchen"! Wasn't it the GOP that has been constantly AGAINST WOMEN'S RIGHTS?????????????????

I am surprised that the far-right-conservative-people who applaud a woman being a mother and being home will swallow this woman who has a newborn baby....... but whose ambition seems to be greater than her desire to be the typical-conservative-wife.

I get the sense that there is more to this woman than meets the eye...... and I am waiting for the media to to UNCOVER the REAL PALIN. Will they have the backbone to do it ???????????????????????

  11. Small Town Librarian

    According to

"It’s true that Palin did raise the issue with Mary Ellen Emmons, Wasilla’s librarian, on at least two occasions. Emmons flatly stated her opposition both times. But, as the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman (Wasilla’s local paper) reported at the time, Palin asked general questions about what Emmons would say if Palin requested that a book be banned. According to Emmons, Palin "was asking me how I would deal with her saying a book can't be in the library." Emmons reported that Palin pressed the issue, asking whether Emmons' position would change if residents were picketing the library. Wasilla resident Anne Kilkenny, who was at the meeting, corroborates Emmons' story, telling the Chicago Tribune that "Sarah said to Mary Ellen, 'What would your response be if I asked you to remove some books from the collection?'

The fact that Sarah Palin even had this discussion about banning books speaks volumes...

  14. McCain = Bush

Funny thing – A lot of people believed this rumor because Palin's views are extreme and fundamentalist.

Palin did threaten the librarian! She almost had her fired! Palin's own mother-in-law later ran for Mayor of Wasill and Palin didn't endorse her own family!

My husband served proudly in Iraq in 2004. Palin, my husband was not on a "task that is from God", he was sent there as he also believes on a lie from the Bush Adminstration.

How can America really consider placing this woman a heartbeat away from the Presidency. McCain's father and grandfather didn't live past 71!

    Wake up America!

Fellow Americans–we should be demanding that Ms. Palin make herself available to the media so that she can answer some basic questions about herself and her experience. Please join me in flooding the blogs and anywhere else you can think of and let's demand that this candidate make herself available so that he can best judge for ourselves whether she is qualified for the job.

Why dot we hear that denial strait from Palins mouth? why some stupid memo from a campaign manager? McCains campaign categorically denies that Palin is involved in a separatist club and that she was against the bridge to nowhere but that's all lies too so why should this be any different? Lets hear Palin lie to the public herself about this not being true. enough with these inbreeds being sheltered. you think Putin or Chavez is going to be sensitive to this which's feelings?

McCain cannot "fact check" the fact that he is No Maverick! Mavericks don't miss 63% percent of Senate votes!

Wake up America! Mavericks don't hire Karl Rove and have Bush aides "tutor" their VP running mate!

Why is CNN being distrcted by stories that only the GOP gives life too? Why isn't CNN reporting on the real stories of Palin's Alaska – the earmarks she lobbied for, the Bridge To Nowhere she was for before she was against it, Troppergate, a zero record of accountability.

DON'T GET BURNED "mavericks" wink wink

So I guess the "wanting to fire" the librarian is false too?

Yeah, trying to feed us a false image, and they keep repeating talking points, attack the MSM and then call everyone unpatiotic, and repeat it over and over and hope we believe it. The problem this time is that we are NOT BUYING it, yes, let them enjoy their convention bounce and in the end we will BOUNCE McCain-Palin in November right back to Alaska and Arizona THEY FORGET THAT "AA" will be mobilized this cycle, you can't stop the CHANGE WE SEEK! Palin=PAIN; McCain=CAIN, read the Bible!

This may stop the polls moving. In Colorado Springs, Sarah Palin claimed that lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had "gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers." Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are private corporations. The taxpayers are getting screwed by the takeover, not being saved from it. Its pretty sad when I know that and the potential VP doesn't. And so it starts….

Interesting how these smears keep popping up that turn out to be Zero, Nothing, Nada. And Obama and Dems deny any involvement. Yet many of the smears that can be traced, trace back to Obama or Dem supporters, activists, or donors.
Don't they realize that as the discredited lies and smears pile up at some point noone will believe anything negative about Gov. Palin. And how stupid!!! Claiming she wanted books banned that had not even been printed according to the time frame of the allleged transgression.

The Bush/McCain policy has put into place a bail out of Fanie Mae and Freddy Mac. As stated by many reporters and opponents:

America is more communist then the Soviets and Chinese combined.

Where has free market gone? Survival of the fittest? This is just more bailout to big business having us, the tax payers pay their bills as they rip us off. All brought to you courtesy of the failed McCain/Bush economy camps.
