McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

There just seem to be way to much baggage with Palin. She may look beautiful but everything that looks good may not be good for our country. As a woman, I am really beginning to wonder what else is Palin really hiding. She will not speak on issues and she is tagging along side McCain like he is her daddy.

Is she strong and independent or does she need her hand held. It appears to me that McCain chose her because of lack of experience. All bark and no bite. I will be watching the VP debate.

My head is caught in the spin, Let's see. Palin asks the libraian a retorical question about what her response would be if she asked that books be banned and then fires the librarian the next day as a loyalty test. All of this was hypothetical. Roll up your pants legs, it is too late to save your shoes.

no one has denied that . As I understand it
Palin asked the librarian whether she would be willing to ban books, the
when the librarian saud ,not, Palin asked for her resignation.
when there was an outcry from citizens of Wasilla, Palin withdrew her request for the librarian to resign.
That has not been disputed as far as i can tell.

Palin is a product of old school evangelical conservatism.
She and McCain would recklessly endanger the possibility of true progress for our nation. we have had a 'maverick' at the helm for eight years. look where it has gotten us.

Even if the list circulating in the email is made up, it is still troubling that she raised the topic of banning books with the town librarian. Why would she do that unless she had an inclination to consider applying such pressure?

I truly doubt she raised this out of the blue as some sort of leading "you wouldn't do that now, would you?" question.

ANY book banning or censorship would be outrageous.

The BOOK BAN reminds me of one other famous person in history: HITLER. He banned books, took them out of libraries and BURNED THEM. Next he rounded up the people that did not agree with him and KILLED THEM! Is history repeating itself? Palin is also known for FIRING PEOPLE who did not fully agree with her. How is John McCain supposed to reach across the aisle when he is an angry old man that will not budge on an issue and now with PALIN who will attempt to fire anyone who does not play by her rules? Today Cheney came out and said he approves of Palin. Enought Said!

As a libertarian voting for barr...I know my candidate doesnt have a shot, but Obama is a better candidate than McCain, atleast he chose someone who knows what the vice president is supposed to do! I am sorry but this country will go further down the toilet if Mr. Adultry and Miss Troopergate get into the office...We already have a mess to clean up we dont need a complete wreckage of our country!

If McCain gets in office hide your sons and daughters! May god have mercy on us if he does!

How can someone with over 30 years in washington talk of change.
Oh yes, just as long as he is on the campaign trail, after that business as usual.
Obama represents a new generation and people who are tired of
    beeing lied too.
Who cares if he has less experience, where did we get with McSames and Bush's politics so far? NO WHERE.
Obama is honest, has a vision and only he is able to lead a new generation.

Wow! CNN has a headline and a video debunking THIS lie told on Sarah Palin, but NONE to debunk the lies told BY Sarah Palin and the McBush campaign.

So much for all of you who want to claim that CNN is pro-Obama. I don't recall them going this far to debunk lies told ON Obama.

    What she thinks about

    Equal pay for Equal Work

    The case of Lily Ledbetter

The fact that her new boss (McCain) thinks its totally fine to screw over working women and mothers, as to not create "frivolous" lawsuits.

We do not need to go back in time- we have too much at stack to put another far right wing president and vice president in office. They are not good for this country – they are back by big oil and we must stop letting big corporations run this country.

More Books Gov. Palin sought to ban:

    A Charlie Brown Christmas
    Elmo goes to a Mosque
One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue State
Polar Bear, Polar Bear What do you Hear?

"The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period."

Palin asking the librarian if she would remove books from the shelves is different than asking her to "ban" the books-this is very Clintonesque–saying something literally true, but in reality, it is a lie.

Books weren't "banned" beause the librarian refused to go along with removal of the books.

Hey CNN, why don't you ask if Palin has ever opposed any books in a public library. Then ask her about Jenna James book when she says that she has never opposed books in libraries. WORK TO CATCH THE LIE. DO NOT JUST REPEAT THE B.S. THAT IS FED TO YOU.
