McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

Let's talk about Silver Bank since McCain seems to be avoiding it's calaspe. Another failed bank with mortgages and land development loans which FEDs took it over and we the taxpayers will foot the bill. John McCain knows something about that, so talk up and stop trying to soak Americans.

Palin is a skilled liar which makes her perfect for the GOP. TO think of her representing the AMerican public with her snotty, snide manner is so unprofessional. Not up to speed yet, another day gone, and still not able to answer questions. The GOP is afraid of what will happen. Do you think the American public is going to vote for her without knowing where is stands on issues? 65 days away from a possible President. I think not.

I was born and raised in Alaska and moved to the southeast 3 years ago but my heart and love is and will always be in Alaska. I have followed Gov Palin as Mayor of Wasilla and as Gov for Alaska. She has done a lot of positive things for Alaska since ousting Gov Frank Murkowski which is not an easy thing to do. Regarding the book ban I know it was a rumor and now has been confirmed as a not a true rumor. If memory services me well I remember a time several years ago when a group of people were trying to get Harry Potter books banned from the school district but that was not at the Mayor or Governor level but within the school district itself. You have to have lived in Alaska to understand we are a special and unique group of people who still believe and trust others for the most part and lend a hand to others in need. I lived through the '64 earthquake in Anchorage and as a child same the true meaning of what it meant to be an Alaskan. People who live in what we call "outsiders or the lower 48" cannot begin to understand what it truly means to be from Alaska and proud to be an Alaskan. I dont share all the same political opinions of Gov Palin but can see from the media although she doesnt have the experience of some of the other candidates she has the drive and determination which makes her a true Alaskan & feel she has a lot to offer as a VP for Sen McCain

Apparently the Obama trolls are out enforce!

The same dirty tactics he used during the primaries is again coming to light! He unleashes all these paid surrogates to troll all kinds of blogs and spread all kinds of vicious rumors that he, the almighty ego, has made up. Look in your closet first before you let your smear machine loose.

I think Sarah is great – is this going to be waiting for moderation also? Actually she is a blatant power monger who knows no truth.

I don't know why people want to make stuff up about Palin - there's plenty of real ammunition to work with. To wit:

    1) She had no position on Iraq as of March 2007.
    2) She was all for the Bridge to Nowhere, until it was convenient to be against it.
    3) It wasn't exactly "straight talk" regarding the jet she attempted to sell on Ebay.
    4) There are still lingering questions about her and her husband's involvement with the secessionist group in Alaska
    5) There are still lingering questions about her pastor problem, the man who thinks Alaska will be a sanctuary for the faithful

and that's all we know of now. If people think that Obama is risky, this gal takes risky to a whole new level.

There's better things to go after Palin about than book-banning.

How about her latest gaffe regarding Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae? She thought their problems were because they had gotten too big for taxpayers. Little did she know that FNM and FRE were PRIVATE organizations.

We CANNOT have someone who knows SO little about the economy in the white house. Add to that McCain's admission that he doesn't know much about the economy, and you've got 2 people who are NOT ready to lead the United States.

People, please think carefully before you consider your vote.

Palin learns from the best. In her first speech she said she fought against the good old boys and adamantly opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, so why in 2006 did she sit next to the good old boy and support the Bridge to Nowhere. Now she is running with the Good Old Boy who voted over 90% with Bush. I am a woman and Barack Obama represents change for America and change for Americans.
Ms. Palin, please check what you did and said before you say it on TV. Was that someone who looked liked you in 2006 who was sitting next to the Good Old Boy supporting the Bridge to Nowhere ??? McCain’s pick is like McCain. The Same thing. Lie to People. Hope we don’t notice. Hope we are not smart enough to check !!!

You will lose Obama! You never did have what it takes to be president of the United States of America. You were just a flash in the pan with good reading skills and a phony grin!

And, Hillary Clinton can't win back voters from McCain/Palin. Hillary lost all credibility when she put party over country and propped up the loser selected by the media and the DNC!

I am a former democrat and Hillary Clinton supporter now enthusiastically for McCain/Palin. They are the authentic reformers with integrity. They will deliver the change Americans believe in! 🙂

Palin is a temporary distraction. Once she is able to be interviewed the world will see that this was a bad pick. Palin doesn't know the capitol of Iraq.

I think the republicans have set themselves up for all this rumor mongering. Remember when they tried to set Obama as Muslim and a gazillion other things that were totally false. Problem is, Palin did look into the prospect of banning books and she may have cancelled the bridge to nowhere, but she sure as heck took their money to do so.

I don't think there is going to be enough time for all the maligning that is surely headed her way to get straightened out before the election. And frankly, I think the last two elections are proof that the Republican's could stand a little swiftboating.

Watch out Sarah – the witch hunters are out in force ! Of course no Democrate has any skeletons in their closet. So Sarah, being a woman, is fair game? Is this fair? NO No more than the beating Hillary took from the Press during her Run. So if the Dems didn't want her why are they dis-ing the Republicans choice? Sarah isn't even running for the same position as Hillary was. Does Joe feel THAT threatened? Can't he handle one small "pit bull"? Just wait until the debate! Better yet, wait until the elections. The press will do & say ANYTHING to discredit Sarah Palin. We should boycott all political press coverage. That would stop the Dems from whinning.

Maybe if she was more honest when she was first introduced to us, we wouldn't be so suspicious about everything about her. But when she said she said 'no thanks' to the Bridge to Nowhere when she actually supported it, and she gave the impression that she sold a jet on Ebay when the listing never got sold, and she said she was a fiscal conservative but she really hired a lobbyist to get money for her town, and when she exaggerated about her accomplishments as mayor, and she has a troopergate scandal going on, and on and on... then it seems like there are probably more problems that we should know about. And when the only time that we've heard her talk is during a 30-minute prepared speech where she lied and smeared and mocked and insulted, then I'm not really feeling like giving her the benefit of the doubt.

    September 8, 2008 08:59 pm at 8:59 pm |

The librarian has stated she was asked what her response would be if the Shilla from Wasilla provided the librarian a list of books to ban. She said she would not ban the books.

As to this "race" card, Obama is both black and white, so who is he playing the "race" card against, little green men from Mars???

From Anchorage Daily News Sept. 4, 2008:

Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.

According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn't fully support her and had to go.

This is really funny... I'd believe anything about the PALIN-McCain ticket. Are they saying this and hoping Americans believe it, or are they manipulating things again, just like they did when some "unknown" person not connected with the campaign modified her Wikipedia biography 30+ times only 2 days prior to the announcement of her selection?

Give me a break – who does this arrogant bimbo and the white haired old guy blurred in the background behind her think they're kidding? "Mavericks" – what a joke -aAnd if her boss won't let her take questions from the press, or even campaign alone, maybe we'll never know.

Palin did send a letter of termination to the Librarian. The city actually had a show down on the issue and she withdrew her termination letter.

It's sad these rumors keep getting splurted out because the DNC has ran out of stuff to talk about. There's nothing left to Obama but an empty suit so smearing the Republican VP choice is all that's left. Obama can not speak without studdering in public, without a written speech. Palin proved she could when her teleprompter was not working for most of her speech. Even Giuliani's teleprompter wasn't working right and he delivered a great speech. So go ahead and keep spewing this junk out. The more the desperate you've become.
