McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

Where did it say she TRIED to ban books?

Obviously some comment posters don't actually bother to read the article correctly as Hillary Supporter for Obama has illustrated. No where does it say that Gov. Palin TRIED to ban any books. Yeesh!

    Wow, she's good at dissembling.

She asked the librarian if she could ban some books. The librarian flatly rejected the idea.

Now Palin is saying she never asked to ban any *particular* book.

That's because the librarian put a stop to it, before it could progress to that level.

Does she have some slimy lawyer parsing words for her, or it that her natural talent?

We live in a pluralistic society. How can the citizens of this great country consider the McCain Palin ticket if they believe in "government for all?" Legislating based on one religious belief in a country made up of many religions seems to me to be anti-American.

Mr. McCain is old. This is not a discriminatory statement; it is a fact. It is entirely possible that he could die in office. Ms. Palin is not considered to be ready for the Sunday talk shows. How can she be ready to be the President?

    Has this country gone mad?

Looks like that team of lawyers that the GOP sent to Alaska is getting their "monies" worth.

Yet more McCain/Palin lies: Though no specific titles have been discovered, she DID try to get the town librarian to agree to book banning- TWICE! Then fired her when she wouldn't submit. Keep your eyes on these self-proclaimed mavericks at all times- they'll stab you in the back if you blink.

Seriously. She didn't ban the books, but she did hypothetically ask the librarian if she would comply to prove her loyalty. She then fired the librarian and reinstated her the next day, a sort of "loyalty test"? What the heck kind of ridiculous nonsense is that? Sure, this makes her sound MUCH better.

All she asked was "what would be your response if I asked you to remove some books?" She did not ask for specific books to be removed. Frankly, I find it to be a valid question for a department head. I would want to know where my employees stand on issues that may come up during my term.

I'm still undecided on my vote, but I'm getting sick of all the false rumors about both candidates and their running mates. Seriously, there's enough dirt on everyone, do we really need to make stuff up?

You really have to report this correctly:
    1. Sarah Palin asked the local town librarian if she would agree to ban books. She was tld "No."
    2. As a result she fired the librarian.
    3. The librarian was later reinstated after some protests.

So yes, the "list" is a hoax, but Palin's attempt to censure books in her town are true as is her firing of a libfrarian for refusing to do that.

Do NOT be intimidated by the Republican meat grinder. Put the facts out there. Chase that librarian. It's all true.

Well, since almost everything she claimed has been debunked, I'll likely believe anything against her. it's a habit for her to lie.

All of Palins inconveinent truths are adding up fast.Everytime something gets fully checked it is then said,at the begining I said that or I only asked that question. It all started when she was quick picked for VP nominee. From there she came out to tell America that she was the most experienced,best,non-pork,reforming maverick and was better then any American that did not see it her way.Not to foget she was just plain repulsive in the way she said all of this. The Rebulicans (I doubt McCain had a choice) put her out there as the next best thing to apple pie. Then because they used a blind date for McCain they did not know much about her and so the media did what all Americans wanted, they vetted her. From there we find out the truth and it hurts and is insulting. They further insult Americans by highjacking Obamas "Change" theme.I don't care about her daughter, I don't care about her church, I don't care about her personal life to a degree. For crying out loud though, everyone has a right to know what she stands for other then canned speeches.Everyone has a right to know that she was indeed for the bridge before she was against it.That is what we call an outright lie and taking credit for nixing it when she was not the one that scrapped it.Don't forget she kept the money.Don't tell America that you are a pork barrell reformer before you tell them the truth about your pork barrell exceptence.Obama has never said he did not recieve pork barrell money or try to make it look like he accepted any.And lets not forget the difference of size in states between Palin and Obama. There are so many mistruths and lies in a very short time it is enough to just say no to Palin. She did ask the librarian about censorship and Palin did want to fire her so it is true that there was at the very least a thought of censorship. That is a point one needs to know before decing on what ticket best represents America. If the Republicans want to throw someone unknown in Americans faces and pick for VP they should be ready to be asked questions and if the answers are suspect you better expect Americans will stand up and find the truth.

Well at least it was a credible rumor. Why would Palin even inquire about banning books unless she were considering it?

Regrets, Big Regrets if McCain/Palin get into the White House. She does not deserve the position. She is not even a leader by an stretch on a worldwide level and the American need to get a real grip about is happening here. A no name and only 60 days to go. Is America so stupid to risk 4 years of a no name and McSame in the White HOuse running this country. If the media can stop it from happening, they owe it to this country to do so.

Good job CNN. She just wanted to know how one might go about removing books from the public library. She wasn't implying she actually wanted to! We'll have to expect craven misresentations like this from the thoroughly cowed press corp for a few more days, I suspect. The SuperMommy narrative still has half a tank left. Wait til next week for the air to start leaking out this media balloon
