Obama campaign calls McCain ad a 'lie'

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="New McCain television ad claims Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere”."]

(CNN) - The presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain are sparring over a new television ad claiming Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere” - the infamous $400 million congressional earmark that became the ultimate symbol of excessive pork-barrel spending.

Watch: The McCain campaigns latest ad, 'The Original Mavericks'

The new McCain ad, set to air in key states, calls both the Arizona senator and Palin "original mavericks," and characterizes the Alaska governor as an ardent opponent of the 2005 bridge proposal championed by Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens connecting Ketchikan, Alaska to the Ketchikan airport on Gravina Island (Population: 50).

Several opponents of Palin, as well as the non-partisan, have noted the claim she was against the bridge is not entirely accurate - the Alaska governor was for the bridge during her 2006 gubernatorial bid, and did not begin opposing it until it became clear the project was doomed on Capitol Hill.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton went even further Monday, calling the assertion a flat out "lie."

“Despite being discredited over and over again by numerous news organizations, the McCain campaign continues to repeat the lie that Sarah Palin stopped the Bridge to Nowhere," Burton said. "McCain and Palin will say or do anything to make people believe that they will change something besides the person sitting in the Oval Office."

But McCain spokesman Brian Rogers is standing by the claim, and said the Obama campaign is launching "hysterical attacks."

“The only people ‘lying’ about spending are the Obama campaign," Rogers said. "The only explanation for their hysterical attacks is that they’re afraid that when John McCain and Sarah Palin are in the White House, Barack Obama’s nearly $1 billion in earmark spending will stop dead in its tracks."

Rogers also provided several press clips noting Palin became a critic of the bridge in her early days as governor of Alaska.

UPDATE: The McCain campaign says the Alaska Democratic Party has removed a Web page that credited Palin for killing the Bridge to Nowhere project.

"National Democrats apparently want to rewrite history and say that Palin did not kill the Bridge to Nowhere," the McCain campaign's Michael Goldfarb said.

Be careful for what you ask for because you just might get it.

Let it be known you cast your vaoe at the voting booth and winners declared but the results of the vote are not a guarantee.

Because the electoral vote has not cast it's vote. Most of the time electoral votes goes toward the candidate who has received the most votes in that particular state.

Some states have laws to vote for the candidate that won poplular vote. However there have been times when electors have voted opposite to the peoples decision. Let it be known that there is no federal law or constitution provision against it.

    Who lost the poplular vote?
    Al Gore

George Bush won it by one electoral vote. Yes one vote. You saw what happen and hope this will never ever happen again.

America be very careful because you just might get it again.

A reminder to us all. These are the worst 8 years I have ever had to endure. The electoral votes has the control and they are watching very carefully what is best for us all. They are human just like us and I do believe that they do care..

The Bush Administration has stung us not once but twice. I want some relief and a fair shake for everyone and the future generation.

    God Bless America

Palin not only lied about the bridge proposal and plane sale, she also lied about something as simple as her son going to Iraq. How is it that her son is going to Iraq in 2 weeks when he hasn't even reported to boot camp yet? Does Palin and the republican party have a problem with stretching the truth or what? I don't believe anything that comes out of their mouths!

Call a spade like a spade! Even the Anchorage Daily News says Palin has flip-flopped on this issue. Palin was for the bridge, then went with the political winds and turned against it when it became a lightning rod for criticism.

Obama's campaign needs to hit back harder about these continuing falsehoods from McCain. But the responsibility also likes with CNN and the rest of the MSM to point out these false statements EVERY TIME they are reiterated. We have to do the same in our daily lives with friends, family, and co-workers. Otherwise these lies just start becoming accepted as fact when they are far from it.

Interview Sarah Palin now... it's time that she starts answering questions from reputable, responsible journalists.

this is ridiculus...i mean palin is a joke. the dems need to get tough on this lady, with out hesitation due to unfair accusations of sexism. she chose a career in politics, some things in politics never change-politics have always been tough-and some things will never change. as for these false polls, c'mon its obvious that these polls are completely engineered. who do these people poll, while there may be undoubtedly some mccain suppoters, there are far to many obama supporters. except for texas and florida and michigan, the electoral college is going blue in november.

I am a proud Barak supporter and here is why:

He is taking away money from the Rich and give to the Poor. We are all equal and we all shall live the same life, and that’s what Barak and his supporters are proud off. Loosing jobs while taxing small companies is nothing but crap.

He is giving health care to everybody and the trillion of dollars will come from the Riches pockets as well. What’s wrong if EVERYBODY will have to stay in line for a day to reach a doctor, as long as everybody in this country gets the same share? Calling this Socialism is media’s crap as well.

Finally black people in this country came to power. Let us prove what we can do to lead this country for the first time in history. It’s our turn and we can make the true CHANGE.

Thank you MEDIA for helping us changing the country in the right direction. Together we will make history.

Rogers needs to get his facts straight – and we the American people need to stop falling for this garbage. And what about the over $200M AK kept for the bridge that never happened? Come on McCain, we expected you to be honorable.

Palin LIED about the EBAY isue too. sold the plan to a Rebublican for a loss. Must have been one of those Good O'l boy deals that she is so against.

Again we see how these LIEs are told over and over and the NEWS MEDEA just keeps on running them. Giveing thousands of hours of fre air time to adds that should be paid for. But no let the NEWS channels be USES as silly pupets to make sure the lies are repeated enough times to ensure that the weak of mind start to think itis TRUE. After all they said it on FOX so it must be true.

This is truly funny. I have never seen so many democratic crybabies. Maybe you guys should think about working instead of sitting on the internet blogging. Obama wants you to be the best you can be, but if you don’t try its ok he will give you free money and health care. Sounds like a joke to me.

America doesn't deserve to have a president like Obama! A candidate with such humbleness, honesty and good judgement only appears once in a lifetime. Well, let's get ready for the anger, rage and hate of the "catholic" candidates.

Wow – this election just keeps getting more and more surreal every day. I think the Bush/Cheney years will seem like the roaring 90s compared to what we'll get with McCain and Palin.

I could be wrong, but I'll have to keep on believing the McCain campaign has something to hide until Palin talks to the press. And when is that going to be exactly? They promised she'd sit down with ABC this week; let's see what exactly she has to say about that bridge to nowhere.

What's so amazing to me is that even when they've been called out these people continue to keep telling lies!!! And what's even more amazing is that people start repeating them like they're truths!! When is this craziness going to end. One of the VALUES I was taught by my mother was not to lie. Maybe they weren't taught the same thing.

Why do the Republicans lie so easily? Why do people who say they are "Christians" and who do not supposedly believe in lying accept leaders who lie without a thought? Look at the past 8 years, we were fed lies on top of lies and people just kept believing it all. It makes one wonder what has happened to the brains of the people in the country.

When did Sarah Palin return that $400 million dollars to Washington after she was against the bridge to nowhere? The last I knew, she never did. It's been reported that the $400 million when to other Alaskan projects.

What? Since when do you take $400 million dollars that was for one project and apply it to others?

What is wrong with our country??? How can we as Americans afford to put McSame/Palin in office??? This is a man who looks up to I the only one who see's what our current situation is?? Our economy has gone down the tubes, we are fighting an endless war?? All this thanks to Bush and we want to put someone just like him in office. Don't get me started on Palin....this woman has a special needs child and a pregnant teen. She needs to go home and care for her children. This woman banned books from the library...she is an extremist!!!

Sarah Palin is DICK CHENEY WITH LIPSTICK!! You got to give it to Karl Rove though, he sure knows how to pick a VP for his party. The FEARFUL RIGHT ate it up. America dooped again. The unqualified but hot weather girl. One time, two times, three times fools. Who said they couldn’t do it again? Who said America was smarter this time around? Who said Bush couldn’t win a 3rd term if he ran again?? The FEAR FACTOR always dominates. It’s just amazing that a party who works for 3% of the people manages to fool an entire 51% into believing they work for them too. Amazing. I had an epiphany yesterday watching the TV show Hole in the Wall. We are screwed. We are an Idiocracy.

Why the "quotes" on "lie"? It IS a lie! Your "quoting" the word lie insinuates that the Obama camp is lying. Either you're in the tank for McCain, or you need new copy editors. Or both.

Hey Sarah, SHOW ME THE MONEY.

If you turned down the bridge, kindly produce the RECEIPT that shows the money going back to the taxpayer. I've just checked my accounts – and I have no record of receiving ANY of that money back!
