Obama campaign calls McCain ad a 'lie'

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="New McCain television ad claims Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere”."]

(CNN) - The presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain are sparring over a new television ad claiming Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere” - the infamous $400 million congressional earmark that became the ultimate symbol of excessive pork-barrel spending.

Watch: The McCain campaigns latest ad, 'The Original Mavericks'

The new McCain ad, set to air in key states, calls both the Arizona senator and Palin "original mavericks," and characterizes the Alaska governor as an ardent opponent of the 2005 bridge proposal championed by Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens connecting Ketchikan, Alaska to the Ketchikan airport on Gravina Island (Population: 50).

Several opponents of Palin, as well as the non-partisan, have noted the claim she was against the bridge is not entirely accurate - the Alaska governor was for the bridge during her 2006 gubernatorial bid, and did not begin opposing it until it became clear the project was doomed on Capitol Hill.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton went even further Monday, calling the assertion a flat out "lie."

“Despite being discredited over and over again by numerous news organizations, the McCain campaign continues to repeat the lie that Sarah Palin stopped the Bridge to Nowhere," Burton said. "McCain and Palin will say or do anything to make people believe that they will change something besides the person sitting in the Oval Office."

But McCain spokesman Brian Rogers is standing by the claim, and said the Obama campaign is launching "hysterical attacks."

“The only people ‘lying’ about spending are the Obama campaign," Rogers said. "The only explanation for their hysterical attacks is that they’re afraid that when John McCain and Sarah Palin are in the White House, Barack Obama’s nearly $1 billion in earmark spending will stop dead in its tracks."

Rogers also provided several press clips noting Palin became a critic of the bridge in her early days as governor of Alaska.

UPDATE: The McCain campaign says the Alaska Democratic Party has removed a Web page that credited Palin for killing the Bridge to Nowhere project.

"National Democrats apparently want to rewrite history and say that Palin did not kill the Bridge to Nowhere," the McCain campaign's Michael Goldfarb said.

This forum is rediculous. The fact that 80% of the posts in this section are negative against Palin tell me one of two things:

    1. People that vote democrat don't have jobs (dont foget to reply it's because of Bush...he is the one that made you lazy)

    2. CNN readership is unquestionably dominated by democrats – makes me wonder why you like it so it because it is biased????? (Answer is 'yes' if this was too hard for you)

Have fun collecting welfare and complaining about the "bad" economy. This bores me.

the biggest point... As governor she still took the money that was meant for the bridge... she DID NOT send the money back. The size of the appropriation was also an issue here.

If McCain and Dick Cheney in a dress get elected to President and Vice President. Then they are going to lead this country "To the Bridge to Nowhere." Now you have Bush calling Palin "An Inspired Pick" I guess Bill Maher is right "This country is too stupid to be Governed" Thanks a lot stupid people!!!

The Bridge To Nowhere seems to be a fib told by Palin. Also, is her son, Track Palin, actually serving in Iraq or is he actually stationed in Ft. Wainwright, Alaska?

Average Americans don't believe that the Earth was created 7000 years ago; We don't ignore overwhelming scientific proof about global warming; We don't support Jews For Jesus; We don't support states seceding from the country; We don't support eminent domain; We don't support banning books; We don't support using political power for personal gain (Troopergate); We do support abortion in the case of rape or incest; We do support sexual education that deals with pre-marital sex, STDs and contraceptives

Palin should not be allowed anywhere near the White House!
She is an extreme religious fundalmentalist.
She lied about a major corruption foe (she accepted campaign contributions in the same fundraising scheme at the center of a public corruption scandal that led to the indictment of Sen. Ted Stevens). She lied about being against earmarking (she requested $27 Million for tiny Wasilla – even McCain criticized her). She lied about her initial support for the Bridge to Nowhere (only reversing her opinion when it became politicially beneficial to do so). She does not support alternate energy sources. She is anti-environmental. She even lied about winning Miss Congeniality!

    Extreme is an understatement.

So you really want a "Warrior For God" one heartbeat away from our nuclear arsenal? I thought unstable, belligerent religious extremists were our enemies…not our representatives.

Haven't the last eight years taught you anything? Republicans never, ever tell the truth.

Why isn't CNN doing honest reporting on this, instead of just repeating each side's claims? The facts are clear: She sought the "bridge to nowhere." She campaigned on it. She kept the money.

Look, To all the uninform people of the U.S.A ask yourself as this woman really answer any real question why do she hang on to Mccain hip like a belt. She will not talk to the press by herself, and if I may point out the word sexism has the press running away from her. I don't get it we didn't
question bush at all and went with the flow. So, i guess we are going to follow the same path. The press won't do their job an people want to fall for the same old same old again (funny).
Is this most people (white America) reason not to vote for the right person.
Sometimes it makes my wonder how silly people are, Obama has been crying out to us about what he is about for awhile now the press has been all over him...........but they are so scared of being called sexist that the are not doing their job. (WOW what a surpise) I think this is a joke she is a joke and for Mccain tryin to pull this off he is a joke. But for the American people to know this an let this happen then we as a nation are a joke..................Well to end this comment I have only to say this if we didn't learn anything from bush then we are a nation doom to repeat the same old same an i feel that this time we will get just what we didn't want to get because we let them do it again to us because we voted them in again......................

This lie isn't surprising. The Republicans actually have the nerve to say with a straight face that electing a Democrat will cause rising deficits when it 's a known fact that Georgie Bush increased the deficit to record levels after it was nearly zero when Clinton left office.

McCain's "increasing deficits" ad is a blatant lie.

Good luck to both McCain and Palin! Obama and Biden haven't even started, and getting to know Palin is a little late in the game.
Polls are even, but unless the GOP hacks into the voting booth's data, then Obama will win against McCain.

Why doesn't the media hold McCain and Palin accountable for their lies? and have been pointing them out since Steve Schmidt started pulling the strings. I guess if you want to spend the money on ads, it doesn't matter if what you say is true or not.

Every one of McCain's ads, and every stump speech has some element of untruthfulness to it. Sometimes the falsehoods are totally blatant. I guess they are banking on the fact that the U.S. is totally stupid. And sometimes, I wonder. McCain cries and whines about everything, then when Obama says one thing they call it hysterical. If it weren't for lies, adjective and adverbs, McCain wouldn't have much to say.
