Obama to Palin: You can’t just ‘make stuff up’

Barack Obama is accusing Palin of trying to 'recreate' herself.

Barack Obama is accusing Palin of trying to 'recreate' herself.

FLINT, Michigan (CNN) –- Refusing to allow the McCain-Palin ticket to usurp his mantle of change, Barack Obama accused the duo of repackaging themselves and ratcheted up his weekend criticism of Sarah Palin, accusing her of trying to “make stuff up” and “recreate” herself in some of his toughest language against her to date.

“Let’s get the facts clear here. When she was mayor, she hired a Washington lobbyist to get earmarks – pork barrel spending – all the things that John McCain says is bad, she lobbied to get!” Obama told a small crowd at community college in this economically hard-hit town.

“When it came to the Bridge to Nowhere, she was for it until everybody started raising a fuss about it and she started running for governor and then suddenly she was against it!

“You remember that?” Obama continued. “For it before you were against it? I mean you can’t just make stuff up, you can’t just recreate yourself, you can’t just reinvent yourself. The American people aren’t stupid.”

Watch: Clinton says 'No McCain, no Palin'

Obama was reacting to a McCain ad out Monday touting Palin’s stance against the infamous $400 million earmark in her home state of Alaska – a position that is central to the Republican’s argument that his ticket will battle wasteful government spending.

The attack echoes his criticism of Palin Saturday, when he charged that she had accepted earmarks “when it's convenient, and then suddenly you're the champion anti-earmark person, that's not change. Come on! I mean, words mean something, you can't just make stuff up."

On Monday, the Democratic nominee asked how McCain could talk about change “with a straight face,” telling the crowd seven of the Arizona senator's top aides of were former corporate lobbyists.

“John McCain says that he is going to tell all those lobbyists in Washington that their days of running Washington are over,” said Obama. “So who is it that he’s going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman? Is he going to tell his campaign manager? I mean, these are folks who have represented every major corporate interest…”

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds responded that there are no registered lobbyists currently on the payroll, “and Barack Obama knows it.”

“John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin are a new chapter of reform in Washington, and if Barack Obama is so concerned about former lobbyists than he doesn’t need to look any further than the leadership of his own campaign,” said Bounds. “Barack Obama does not have the record to make change, and voters are recognizing it.”

Obama took another jab at his GOP opponents during a response on Social Security during the event’s question-and-answer session, calling McCain's position “another example of the ‘No Change Express.’”

Hope everyone is really thinking before voting based on an appeal factor in this race. Palin has everyone talking. But isn't it scary that out of the 4 friend appearing on good morning america only 1 would come out and say she is voting for her. 2 claim to be undecided and 1 would not comment. Makes you wonder if she is so good at what she does wouldn't you think at the very least her close friends (ones that know her best) would support her.

Americans are too stupid to see whats going on in front of their own eyes. You are the laughing stock of the world. Your country is no longer the most powerful in the world but the most laughable. Your democratic system is a joke. You have people running for office who lie, cheat, break the laws, and still you people vote for them because they look good. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha I am so glad I am not an American. This is better than Archie Bunker and The Jeffersons. Just another bunch of ignorant racist rednecks. I doubt very much if CNN, who is bias, has the gonads to even post this.

  7. Old white lady for Obama

Old man Mccain and his prom Queen are the best comedy act in town.
However, on a serious note, voting them into office would be a disaster for this country. I like to think that most Americans are too intelligent and decent to make that mistake.

MT, Texas wrote: I guess Obama doesn't remember the over $1 BILLION in earmarks that he's placed onto bills … including $MILLIONS to his wife's interests.

John McCain earmarks – $0 for his entire career!!!

The difference? Obama did not claimed not accepting earmarks to help his community. It happens all the time to these politicians to go to Washington to represents their constituents. There is nothing wrong with earmarks, I'd rather see the money spend here to help create new jobs than spend them in another country.

The Republicans have o be the smartest group of people in the world. You take a president who starts an unfounded war, makes us less safer than we were years ago, produces no child left behind (a joke), runs a campaign based on end ending gay marriage and abortion. Guess what issues we are still dealing with: gay marriage and abortion. Watches the economy fall, hundreds of thousands of jobs lost, government bail out for Bear-Stearns, Freddie and Fannie. Sky high oil prices which have convienantly come down during election time. CEO's get fired for this type of stuff, but somhow we have a deadlocked election, and looks like we are trying to continue this pace for another 4 years. Either the Republicans are very smart or we are the dumbest bunch of voters I have ever seen in my life. We dont need someone else to come in and destroy our country, we will do it on our own. The worst economic times the country has seen since the "Great Depression", and yet we want to elect someone who says that he is not that strong on economic issues.

Palin finally meets the press - or at least one of them: As mentioned above, Palin will sit down with ABC later this week for her first big interview with the national media. ABC will give Palin softball questions and make sure she looks good.

This women is such a coward she well not answer any tough questions from the media she hides behind McCains coat tails. She is not tough enough to face the media she is a coward pure and simple.

She even shoots big game like mooses from a helecopter how sporting is that. Why does she just drop Napalm on women and children like McWar did during the Vietnam war.

I am so disapointed that the MSM has not called her out and have her go toe to toe with the MSM. She is such a chicken, coward and should not be in this election.

I respect Hillary she will stand up for herself, I respect all the other political women who answer tough questions everyday. Even Mrs, Obama will stand up to the media this women is a coward 1st and foremost.

I am glad he is trying to fight. Although I haven't seen much fire in this guy. I would be much more confident in the election and the direction of our countries affairs if he had had the good judgement to choose Hillary as the veep. She won just shy of half the votes. Oh well, I sure hope he wins.

Hit her hard O. The media folded like a tent once Mccain and his goons started complaining because they were actually vetting Palin. I guess McCain got upset because he forgot that part of the process before he chose her. Keep hitting McCain and Palin hard. You can't let them sell these lies to the American people. Don't sit back and think that voters are smarter than that because they are not. Look at the results of the past two election.

Palin = most taxpayer money earmark PER CAPITA IN THE USA!

No way, no how! She doesn't understand economics our what the rest of the USA faces!

She might be nice, but if she's out of touch, she won't understand why or where to make CHANGE.

"Stop earmarks"??? – 17 billion US annual earmarks... that's NOTHING compared to our other troubles – which is where we need CHANGE. (job loss, retirement, housing, healthcare, social security etc.)

Apparently, if the polls are accurate, a lot of people are eating McCain and Palin's BS Express right up. It's as if the American people haven't been kicked around enough and want a little more.

He is falling right into their plan. The tougher he comes out against things like this the more they can turn the tables and not be the "negative ones" he hits her on some millions she asked for and then they can hit HARDER on the BILLIONS he put in in IL.

No Mr. Obama they do not think the American people are stupid. just YOU and since your ego is getting the best of you you are proving that fact. They are playing you like a fool...
