Obama says 'enough is enough'

(CNN) — Barack Obama accused the McCain campaign of "lies" and "Swift boat" politics Wednesday, after nearly a day of claims his 'lipstick on a pig' comment was a sexist attack leveled at GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin.

"Spare me the phony outrage. Spare me the phony talk about change," Obama said at the start of an education event in Virginia. "We have real problems in this country right now. The American people are looking to us for answers, not distractions, not diversions, not manipulations. They want real answers to the real problems we are facing.

Watch: 'Spare me,' Obama says

"I don't care what they say about me. But I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and swift boat politics," he also said. "Enough is enough."

Obama's heated response came after the McCain campaign said the Illinois senator owes Palin an apology for invoking an old adage on the campaign trail Tuesday: "That's not change," Obama said, saying John McCain’s policy views were similar to President Bush’s. "That's just calling something the same thing something different. You know you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."

McCain's campaign said Obama's remarks were offensive and a slap at Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin - despite the fact that the Arizona senator himself used the phrase last year to describe a policy proposal of Hillary Clinton's.

Within minutes, the McCain campaign announced a conference call focused on the remark, which they said was a deliberate reference to Palin's line: "You know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick."

UPDATE: Responding to Obama's comments, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said, "Barack Obama can’t campaign with schoolyard insults and then try to claim outrage at the tone of the campaign."

"His talk of new politics is as empty as his campaign trail promises, and his record of bucking his party and reaching across the aisle simply doesn’t exist," Rogers also said.

Well at least one of the candidates is a grown up. I wonder what McCain and Palin will be when they finally grow up. Did you notice how "spunky" mccain has become since Palin joined his team. Viva Viagra.!!!!!

Wow, this sure is a liberal blog. What does the daughter's situation have to do with balancing the budget? Hypocrites most of you.

What about Biden's plagiarism? I'd say that is much worse.

What about Obama's ties to a man who blew up buildings and killed those protecting it.

obama's supporters are a group of whiners, low-esteem, mean-spirited, hateful, empty-headed people easily led by an unqualified, arrogant, radical elitist!

Funny, it was OK for McCain to claim that then- Attorney General, Janet Reno, was Chelsea Clinton's father several years ago.

I actually can't wait for Palin to explain her stance on family abstinence, and it should be asked; she made it a policy issue by going public with the topic, just like she made family and religion public topics when she introduced them and now stands by indignantly when she starts getting asked about it!

Really? Obama has two daughters and would NEVER mean Plain was a pig. McCain used the same words to describe Hillary's Health Care Plan. It is an old adage. This is just Rove politics-PATHETIC! I am sorry but this time I don't want a C-president (Bush), or a fifth from the bottom president (McCain), I want someone who defeated the odds and ended up on top (Obama). We have real problems and we need a leader to help us move forward. McCain cannot even use a telepromptor. Even LBJ finally got used to it. McCain cannot see the future; he is stuck in the past.

He's doing the same thing that he did to Hillary and the media loves it because is coming from Obama the man with a thin resume, poor election for running mate and with this comment his faith is sealed. He just lost the election

McCain loves to focus on anything but the important issues like the economy and healthcare. He makes sure his "Pitbull" gives the public enough family drama to take the spotlight off of him. Good dog.

The GOP wants us to believe they're the party of women's rights, environmentalism and political correctness too.

The party of "family values is teaching us it's okay to misrepresent you record even after every media outlet says it's untrue. The party of patriotism thinks it's okay to smother Palin's "Sambo" comments but them cry foul at Obama's "lipstick" comment – even though McCain has said the same thing twice!

Oh my Gosh! I cannot believe the number of people on here taking up for that piece of scum, Obama. OF COURSE he was referring to Sarah Palin – even the people in the audience knew. I don't care how it has been used in the past – Obama KNEW EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS DOING – he was taking a swipe at Sarah Palin and EVERYBODY KNOWS IT!! He was mocking her "lipstick" comment at the convention. Please for Gosh's sake – WAKE UP PEOPLE. He is an arrogant, condescending, but devious little moron!

John McCain puts lipstick on pigs. He also attires them in blond wigs, garters, and tube tops. The he takes them to his basement lair where he denounces god, micturates on the Constitution, dances the Watusi, creates a Swift Boat from popsicle sticks, and cheats the pig at checkers. He then makes love to the pigs.

Tax Facts as determined by the independent organization TPC:

    1. Families earning between $38,000 – $66,000 will receive the following tax breaks under each candidate.

    Obama McCain

    $1.012 $312

    2. Donald Trump backs John McCain who does not know how many houses he owns(his staff is not sure either , but somewhere between 7 & 9) and can afford $500 shoes.

You decide which candidate and party is on the side of the “little guy” in America.

McCain used exactly the same coment against Hillary Clinton. So it is not sexist when McCain uses it but Obama is sexist when he does. Does this mean McCain does not remember using that same phrase. Or that McCain believes, like Nixon, that if you tell a big lie often enough people start to believe it.

This is the dumbest garbage I have ever heard. I have seen lots of other politicians use that exact same line. The only people making a big deal out of this are the people who need to hide behind this kind of shallow garbage because they have no depth or ideas.
Let's try not to make a total mockery of our electoral process.
While we are at it how about someone call Palin out on her constant lying about the bridge to no where.

Biden and another spokesperson from the Obama camp also used the lipstick smear yesterday, so it really does look like talking points that backfired on Obama.
