Rangel says he will not resign over back taxes dispute

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Rangel is not resigning."]WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, said Tuesday he would not step down as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means committee in the face of calls from the Republican leader in the House for him to resign.

Rangel has been under fire for failing to report income from a rental property he owns in the Dominican Republic. He admitted Tuesday he had not paid tax on the income, but said it was a mistake and that he would pay whatever back taxes he owes.

If bush and co. have not been charged for far worse crimes then you definitely should not resign. Rethuglican hypocrisy at its best.

All these do-gooder liberals have two sets of for them, one for us. SURPRISE! They don't want to pay taxes, either!

A "mistake," eh? Just like the "oops, I didn't realize I had a fourth illegal rent stabilized apartment" mistake? Charlie, you are a disgrace to the Democratic part, a disgrace to New York and a disgrace to society. Please go away.

It's politics as usual for Rangel and Obama. I thought Obama was a different kind of politician?

Rangel is a Putz. He has been above it far to long. Its time hold this guy to the same standard we (should) expect from public officials. Instead we get "Rangels". Wake up America. Make some demands

Imagine if a Republican had a no interest loan and did not pay taxes.

When the chairman of House Ways and Means Committee doesnt pay taxes, he should not pounce when average Joe forgets to pay taxes.

There is no requirement to quit or be fired from your job because you owe back taxes. If that were the case, there would be millions of Americans required to resign or be fired. Republicans hands aren't clean, investigate John McCain.

At least he is willing to pay his back taxes. How many coorporations get away with paying taxes by listing their HQ offshore. The US loses $100 billions of dollars in revenue because of thousands of these coorporations avoiding their responsibilities. Why aren't they being investigated?

See ya buddy. I may be voting for Obama and supporting the Dems over teh Reps this year, but "oops I forgot to pay taxes on this" sounds like more of the same.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem at this point.

Leave this dear man alone, let him pay his taxes and let him be.If the Rebublicans want to admit that the McCain/ Palin ticket is a hoax and have lied at every single event and slandered without facts then maybe they can stand up for truth. The McCain campaign has made a mockery out of truth and facts so they can hardly judge someone that has admitted to a mistake and is willing to pay.If we were to pressure this great man to resign then McCain and Palin should be resigning immediately,as they won't even admit to irreversable lies on a daily basis.

Hmmm the guy who heads up the committee that writes tax laws is caught being a tax cheat – and not only won't step down from Congress... but won't even step down from his committee chairmanship.

Yeah, that's some real change we can believe in.

Barack is addressing the stupid lipstick distraction now. He's says "Enough". He says "Spare me the phony outrage, the phony talk about change. The American people want real answers."

Just more smear from the lipstick pig Republicans. Let me inject here and I hope CNN will post. Why is it that the the east and left coast people of this great nation...the people of the big northern cities get the fact that what we have is not working? Why would you vote a 3rd time to something that has already failed twice? Just because you are a conservative or a liberal there comes a time when you have to say..hmm ok this aint working lets try something else. Well we did in 2000 and well the last eight has not worked out so lets try the Dems...if they are doing good in 4 or 8 years lets get rid of them...but please middle and southern america...lets not go for 4 more of the same. We need some kind of Health Care reform, we need some kind of Education Reform, Veterans need better benefits and better college programs...the current G.I. Bill is a JOKE! Lets get behind somethint different and please lets keep race and sex out of it....this is way too serious to vote for someone just because you WANT a female or an african american....this is ABOUT THE ISSUES PERIOD because the issues are the only thing that is going to save us.

What? A Democrat resigning because he betrayed the trust of the American people? It just doesn't happen. To do this, he would have to have a soul. These criminals have no soul or morals.

It used to be a big deal when one of the senators or representatives broke the law or behaved badly.... today, like a murder in Chicago, it is hardly national news.

Our leaders don't commit crimes...they make "mistakes".

Gee... maybe they will have him appear before an ethics committee... which most Americans think is like a tea party where they all arrive in the same cars, ask polite questions during the party, then leave in the same cars again. If it is on TV, then they may yell at each other and then go to tea together after.
