McCain gets grilled on The View

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Sen. John McCain was a guest on 'The View' Friday."]
(CNN) - When John McCain agreed to appear on the day-time talk fest known as The View, he may not have been expecting too many hard-hitting questions.

But the Arizona senator was aggressively pressed on VP candidate Sarah Palin's qualifications to be vice president, as well as his new negative campaign ads that several independent fact-checks have called downright misleading.

Co-host Barbara Walters immediately asked McCain about a remark he’d made that Palin might just be the most "marvelous running mate" ever, asking, "that's not a little strong?"

"We politicians are never given to exaggerations or hyperbole, as you know," McCain joked, before praising Palin as the most "popular governor in America" and one who has united a "spark in America."

Walters went on to press Palin's reformist credentials, noting McCain has served in Washington for more than two decades and asking repeatedly, "who's she going to reform, you?"

McCain began to answer by saying Democrats have held control of Congress for two years, before Walters quickly interrupted: “But tell me who she is going to reform - we aren't talking about the economy, we're not talking about housing, she was chosen to reform, who is she going to reform?"

"The Democrat Party, the Republican Party, even an independent," McCain said, appearing somewhat frustrated, "She'll reform all of Washington."

"How? What will she do," Walters appearing somewhat exasperated said. "What is she going to reform specifically, senator?"

McCain said Palin had a strong record on vetoing earmark spending. "The fact is she was a reform governor, she took on an incumbent governor of her own party and defeated him. She sold the airplane and fired the chef –" he began.

"She sold the airplane at a loss," an unrelenting Walters interrupted.

McCain was later pressed on the increasingly derisive tone of the campaign, and his new television commercial that carries the widely discredited claim Obama supported comprehensive sex education of kindergarteners as an Illinois state senator.

McCain defended the ad’s claims, as well as those of a Web ad that said Obama’s “Lipstick on a Pig” comments were directed at Palin. He added that if Obama had agreed to a series of townhalls he’d proposed, the tone of the campaign might have been more amicable.

"If we had done what I asked Senator Obama to do, I don't think you'd see the same tenor of this campaign," he said. “Why don't you ask Obama the next time he's on this show why won't he be in town meetings with me?"

"You bring us Sarah Palin and we'll ask Obama," Walters quipped.

It´s the same Republican tactics they use all the time. They just copy the statements of the other side.
Democrats talking reforms – so do Republicans talk the same.
Democrats fixing fact lies from the other side – so the Republican generally claim the Democrats were liers.
Are there any original ideas they have on their own ? They never can argue the important details.

Go Ladies of the View. He couldn't answer because he doesn't know. The only thing mcsame and puppet palin know is how to throw dirt. They both are the worse kind of politicans. they deserve each other. And her interview with Gibson was a joke. War, war,war that is all she knows. I think she missed her true calling. she should be in the military. she has nothing to say. Biden is going to eat her alive in their debate. Then America will see what a joke that ticket really is.

Palin is a time bomb waiting to explode. Two extremist GOP candidates. One is 72 yr old man and the other is 44yr old woman. What an unstable and scary combination. God help us!

It took the women on The View to ask him REAL questions and Mccain didn't know what hit him!
McCain: I'm a POW... Palin i need you... my friends, so what if i ripped off the entire 'change' concept off my opponent’s campaign, i couldn't find anything to overlook that fact that i'm bringing you a 3rd Bush term. my friend look, i picked a woman for my VP, nothing else should matter just make me President. And why is everyone in the world being sexist towards Palin because they are actually asking her tough questions and scrutinizing her like any male opponent new on the national scene! Sexist everyone! Sexist!

Palin's interview with Charles Gibson was very GOOD. She proved she can stand toe to toe with the leberal media that leans so strongly toward the Demoratic Party. I actually think Democrats don't know what to think about her because she has stolen some of the "star" power from their golden boy, Obama. She's down to earth and appeals to a lot of us clinging to our Bibles, toteing our guns, and wanting less of Big government.

I wish the View would interrogate Obama about the benefits of his tax plan, or how he intends to support more program handouts. The media is truly showing their Democratic colors.

Yes, the question is: What can Sarah Palin do for America? Currently, she doesnt have time to answer to the Press and the Public, how will she have time for reforms?

The question is who will hold the Democrats responsible for choosing a "puppet" as their presidential nominee. Hopefully it won't be the American people, because if we are responsible, that means he was elected president and it will be too late by then.

I know Palin went to 5 or 6 colleges before she earned a degree...did she also go to Reform School?

What a sick joke McCain has pulled on the country.

I love how people actually discredit Obama by calling him a celebrity (although the Republicans say Palin is "POPULAR" every chance they get) or how people and other countries actually like him (so how is people liking him supposed to be a negative trait???isn't that the whole goal??) and they use this as a campaign strategy? Wow.....and how is McCain going to change Washington when he is keeping the same policies as are in place now (did I mention that he is deliberately copying Obama's change theme??)...Do me a favor Republicans, stop campaigning on negative sound bites and talk about the issues.

That's riiiight!! I forgot Barbara Walters has interviewed everyone from Fidel Castro, Indira Gandhi, Boris Yeltsin, Margaret Thatcher, Hugo Chavez, and other world Monica Lewinski and Michael Jackson. I guess he thought the ladies would just ask him for his bar-b-q recipe. LOL

CNN – would you please step up and ask the right questions? Barbara Walters asked the right questions. It is time, we find out why we should vote for McCain-Palin (I am voting for Obama, no questions asked).

Millions of voters are about to vote for McCain because of Palin. This is ridiculous. If God forbid something happens to McCain she becomes the next president. Think about that for a second. let's face it, she does not have what it takes to be the next president.

And as a news organization it is your moral duty to portrait a true picture of each candidate.

Walters gave up being an objective long ago. I'm sure that she would ask Obama, "So, you are the greatest thing ever, your comment?"

If only Walters and the liberal media and CNN would grill Obama like this we would have a whole different race.

    In all seriousness,
Do we really want to see Palin debate Biden on national tv?

I'm actually beginning to feel sorry for the gal.

Does she realize that she is nothing more than a sacrificial lamb for the GOP in this election cycle?

  23. Obama's Done

Wow, some one wants an actual concrete answer? Sucks to be McCain.

If Palin is "marvelous" maybe McCain should promote her to the top of the ticket. If she's qualified to lead and she's the reason McCain is up in the polls....Let the lady lead the way.

  24. Sarah Palin ROCKS!!

I think The View should be changed to 'The ONE View". The left are supposed to be so inclusive until they realize you do not agree with them. I thought John McCain did GREAT!! It is too bad that BO cannot think on his own without a teleprompter. He refuses to do townhall meetings with John McCain so we can see the REAL Obama. I sure hope he does not become our "Stinker in Chief"!! Just Say NO to BO!!

McCain should have replied: "Palin is going to reform the same people Obama is going to change."
