Obama says some ads against him “fabricated” and “lies”

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Obama is sharpening attacks against McCain and the GOP."]
DOVER, New Hampshire (CNN) –
On the first day of what his campaign called the “final stretch,” Barack Obama hammered at John McCain, and repeatedly linked him to President Bush’s policies.

“We can’t afford four more years of what George Bush and John McCain consider progress,” he said at a town hall not far from Portsmouth. “We can’t afford another President who is so out of touch that they think the economy is strong right now and promises to the exact same thing we’ve been doing for the last eight years.”

The Obama campaign seized on a comment from Thursday night’s forum in New York where McCain said it was “easy” for him to become “somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have” while in Washington.

“Maybe from where he and George Bush sit, maybe things do look fundamentally sound,” Obama said after repeating McCain’s quote and eliciting some groans from the audience. “Maybe they don’t see what’s taking place. Maybe they’re that out of touch. But I do see what’s going on and so do you.”

Even as Obama goes on the offensive against McCain in these final weeks, he has spent time defending his own campaign, reassuring voters that the recent “lipstick” story, spike in enthusiasm for the GOP ticket, and serious up-tick in negative ads does not mean his presidential effort is off-message or floundering.

At a New Hampshire town hall Friday, a man stood and asked Obama, “when and how” was he “going to start fighting back against attack ads and smear campaigns.”

“I know there are a lot of Democrats, and some Independents and some Republicans who really want change who start getting nervous because they’ve seen this movie before every four years. Right? You have ads that are being just fabricated, they’re just made up. And lies – that’s the word I was looking for,” said Obama.

“Here’s what I can guarantee you: that we are going to be hitting back hard – we have been hitting back hard but …I’m not going to start making up lies about John McCain … we’re going to make sure that anything that is out there that we are immediately responding to. But this election is too important, it’s too serious to be playing silly games.”

The Democratic nominee also pledged that families making less than $250,000 a year would not see any type of tax increase should he become president.

Almost every day I hear either John McCain or his running mate telling lies or outright distortions and the main stream media is showing no sign of outrage. Well, my wife and I are outraged and were fed up with George Bush/John McCain policies.

John McCain wants to stay in Iraq for a hundred years and his silly running mate is telling her son and his fellow troops that they are going to Iraq to fight those responsible for planning and executing the 9/11 attacks! Sarah has told her church that the fight in Iraq is gods will, well I wonder what else she has in her mind if she should happen to become president?

My wife and I don't trust Sarah Palin and we have seen John McCain turn on almost every maverick position he has ever held and he now sounds like George Bush on every position.

  6. Palin is a cocky wacko and McCain thinks killing people is the only path to victory

Often the sad fact is that it is easier to believe a lie then the truth, which is why McCain is doing as well as he is quite capable of spewing lies with a strait face.

Go get em OBAMA!!!! Use both barrels and blast the truth across the networks and do not stop. We are desperate for Leadership in Washington that really cares about Americans and has the capabilities to lead this nation in a new direction to preserve the America and ideals we all value so much.

What do you expect, senator Obama. The Republicans can't win this time. All they can do is lie and hope of if will sticks.

John McCain and his cronnies are the biggest low lifes. But what do you expect when Karl Rove and George Bush's people are involved. They are so slimy it is sickening. The Media should be reporting on this and calling them out. I guarantee if Obama was doing this it would be another story. The American people are so sick of this double standard and we will find out on Election Day just how sick they are. John McCani and Sarah Palin are HYPOCRITS!

I hope this is the year America grows up. Imagine civil debate among adults – no name calling, mud slinging or temper tantrums. I find it sad that so many people (blog-posters, anyway) equate a mature, professional outlook as meaning "elitist".

    There's still hope yet.

Oh so NOW it's time to stop playing games is it? That's funny, where was this kind of talk when you were making sexist remarks about Hillary Clinton? Where was this kind of talk when you were calling Bill Clinton a racist? Where was this kind of talk when you had a cut out of McCain on your plane? Now it's time to get down to business, when you're losing and everyone is really starting to see the phony liar you are. What do you mean by it's time to stop playing games? Do you mean like having no idea how to fix the economy so you're big idea is to just hand out more stimulus checks? That's not a solution, that's welfare. That money has to come from somewhere, but I guess you dont have any ideas about that. Just sweep everything under the rug. That's what Barack Obama does. That's all he knows how to do.
    McCain/Palin 08!

and some ads against Palin and McCain are fabrications, half-truths or lies. It's up to the voter to either check into the validity of the statements and then decide who to vote for. I've heard commentators speak outright lies on the news, so it is difficult determine the "truth" about the candidates. Both the good and the bad news about the internet is that information can be spread very quickly and the information may be the truth and may be a half-truth or a lie. Bottom line is anyone can say anythng they want about a candidate.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that McCain is doing everything but talking about the issues? Palin is starting to be revealed as well.
McCain & Palin don't even agree with each other so how do they know where they stand on issues? When you have no ideas or solutions you make things up about the other guy! Isn't that the way the Conservatives have always run their campaigns? Unfortunately for Palin, Charlie wasn't playing games yesterday during the interview & she clearly wasn't allowed to bring in her teleprompter or cue cards.
The fact that she is a woman is not enough to qualify her for the VP spot.

The experience of the last eight years ought to have put to rest the absurd notion that we should choose our president based on whom we would feel comfortable sitting down with over a cool one. I don't know any corporation that would choose its CEO on that basis, so why in the hell should a nation of some 300 million people do so? It was tried, we got an idiot, we suffered, pfffttt! So, here's my suggestion: let's elect the smartest dude or woman we can find. Makes sense to me.

People remember 1993 when the democrats including those still in power in the House and Senate raised taxes on the rich, "NOT"! With Obama's European Socialist Agenda he needs to have everyone pay tax rates like Europe.

You didn't expect anything else did you. The Republicans have nothing better to do than to make things up. Let your staff and the 527's slam them back. Don't waste time with their nonsense.

I am getting so sick and tired of STUPID Repubs saying Obama is mud-slinging. Have you ever heard a tit for a tat. How can this man stand by and listen to McOldasdirt run him down and tell these idiotic lies about him and not say anything... If I hear or see one more thing about Palin I am going to scream....She is just a figment of my imagination she is no more ready to a VP than my 85 year old Grandmother...Oh wait that's a good running mate for McCain. I listened to this woman last night and I could not believe how much she just LOLLY GAGGED right through the questions. I really think the American people can read between the lines as to what McCain and Palin are doing. It might be a joke to some but this is very serious to me. I am just tired of the Circus Palin and McCain are during. If they want to act at the expense of the American people go to Hollywood...

I agree with your comments. Rush Limbaugh stated about a month ago that he was brought in to help Bush Sr win the white house 20 years ago and that it worked so well, they had him continue helping the republican party with his radio show.

He was instructed to help destroy the democrats with a smear campaign. The republicans have used this smear tactic ever since. It does, unfortunately work, and the losers are the American people.

The republicans have not won an election on policies since Reagan, but have won by lying and smear tactics.
