McCain and Palin plan joint town halls in battleground states

McCain and Palin will hold joint events in key states.

McCain and Palin will hold joint events in key states.

RENO, Nevada (CNN) - CNN has learned that John McCain and Sarah Palin plan to hold joint town hall meetings next week.

A McCain adviser says early plans are to hold the town halls in western Michigan and Wisconsin, although the exact details of where and when they will be held are still being worked out.

These events would likely mark the first time Palin takes questions from voters.

Aides say her solo campaign events planned for Nevada Saturday, Colorado Monday, and Ohio Tuesday are all scheduled as rallies where she will speak to but not interact with voters.

McCain is known for his town hall meetings, and often touts his penchant for the ask-anything approach as proof of his "straight talk."

But he hasn't held a town hall in almost a month - since August 20 in New Mexico.

And the man who promised to hold frequent press conferences in the White House hasn't held an availability with traveling reporters in exactly a month: His last press conference was August 13.

McCain aides are quite candid about the fact that they tried for months to persuade him to hold fewer press conferences in order to stay on message, and finally succeeded.

First, he stopped bringing reporters on his bus for his signature "straight talk legs."

Then he severely cut back on what had been a McCain campaign trail staple - a press conference after events with voters.

Senior advisers say they believe that has allowed them to better refine and control their message, and insist that contributed to his rise in the polls even before Palin was picked.

Instead, McCain does a slew of interviews with local reporters and anchors - not just in the states he's visiting, but also via satellite.

It’s a tried and true way for candidates to get their messages out through what campaigns consider to be less of a “filter.”

McCain aides have been getting complaints from traveling reporters about the reduced access, but it is still unclear when or if he'll hold another press conference.

This woman Sara Palin is so distasteful and evil I cannot believe that people are wanting to vote for McCain because of her. Who in their right mind cannot see through her. She is a liar, deceiving, controlling, selfish and ignorant on all policies. You would think she lived in Russia and not Alaska. People are only excited about her because she is pretty. Why are Americans so shallow!!!! She is power hunger and loves the spotlight. What about her family, her daughter???? What she is going to have the daughters raise her baby now. Trust me that will come back to bite her in a big big way. What a loser she is...........McCain he is pitiful, just pitiful. Having her do his dirty work, stand at her side as she speaks for him. Cant he speak?! I dont want a president who cant speak for himself...Why dont they separate the serpent from the apple. That is what it reminds me of when Eve was deceived by the serpent snake....then Adam followed right behind her....which is 48% of Americans that say they will vote for McCain/Palin. I cannot believe republicans have stooped so low so shallow.

This is a bunch of crap, she can speak to the audiance but she cannot take question from her. We do not know her. Anyone voting for this ticket is not smart and don't care anything about the fate of the world. They are both liars.

This is very telling. The McCain campaign thinks he needs her to make him look good.

OOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Palin is going to take questions at a "town hall meeting". OH, WOW!! What sort of hard-hitting brain twisters is she going to get from the throngs of faithful?....

"How do you manage to keep your hair so nice after a long day??"

"Isn't it awsome that you can actually see Russia, standing in Alaska??"

"Is John McCain the best American ever, since George W Bush???"

Saw the Charlie Gibson interview and Sarah Palin is life imitating art. Remember, Suzanne Stone, ya know, Nicole Kidman's character in TO DIE FOR?

When Gibson asked her about foreign policy experience Palin actually said:

"you can see Russia from land in Alaska."

Take out the murder plot and put in the run for the white house and it's just HILLARIOUS!!!

Sounds like she is still not to be trusted out on her own. Unless she is well prepared with a script, she is too much of a loose cannon. Bad attributes for VP, or heaven forbid, the Oval Office.

If McCain thinks he is going to win this election "shielding Ms. Blink Blink Nanook Palin" from the "tough questions", he can think again! I doubt there are enough American Voters, who support two liars, to give them victory! AND TWO LIARS ARE BETTER THAN ONE – right?

I can hardly wait until the Debates! Joe Biden will win that debate hands down, and Obama will easily handle McCain!

  12. Plain Talk

I think politics is pretty disgusting in this country. The way it has gone to a lower level. The way people are more concerned about sound bites than the issues. People should hold these people to a much higher standard and they're not–it's ridiculous.

Today I was thinking about, or comparing Obama's experience with Palin's experience. She's been a mayor, a governor, and she's qualitied to be president based on her experience. That's fine.

But compare Obama's intellect with Sarah's. It's not just your experience but it is your level of intellect, too. He is more accomplished and shown that over the last 2 years of campaigning. Education used to mean something in this country. He's not going to say it, but I will. Barack has a law degree from Harvard, he was a professor, president of the Harvard Law Review, a he's a decent man.

    He gets my vote.

Unprecendented move for Palin? Is that a Republican answering questions from voters? From the Press? Caring about the country?

It's amazing to me that after the Democratic convention Joe Biden went out alone to campaign. Why is the McCain camp afraid to allow her to go at it alone in a question and answer session? If you're so confident in your number 2 shouldn't they be able to stand it alone this close to election?

    Dear Old John,
Don't let dog out. Make sure she is always under your armpit. She might spoil the broth. She is risky, you know it beter than me. Especially, do not let her talk to the press and interact with voters.

SARAH should be the candidate. She is doing all the work – McCain is just a “pretty face”

McCain at least put some lipstick on – smile and don’t say anything…

    On second thought…
McCain can be the campaign JANITOR – he looks the part when he puts his cap on.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! the american people will not be fooled again – mccain is a liar and so is palin – they admitted she did not go to iraq what's next? they are exposed on fact check . com youtube, bill maher, john stewart, and cambell brown and now barbara walters.

Sarah Palin will speak but not take any questions from the audience.

Thats because she doesn't know anything.

I guess she is your only hope Sir....

    Dear Mr. McCain,

I met you at the Naval Academy in the late 90's when you held a small forum about your time as a POW. Your entire persona exuded courage and integrity; I could not wait to have someone in the White House with your character and values. Today, I saw your interview on the View and I must say that you have totally changed my opinion of you. You lied AND you lacked the courage to admit that your ads where clear distortions of Mr. Obamas Policies. After the Rove tactics used against you in 2000 I would not expect YOU to sink so low. Barack has my vote "for sure" NOW….

Of course it will be a joint town hall...that way McBush can jump in and bail Palin out or modify her answers when the tough questions come up. If she answers any at all:)

  23. A ray of Hope

I suppose they will each continue to perpetuate the lies that have fueled, and continue to plaque their campaign, for it is rather obvious that McCain cannot draw a crowd without his VP sidekick...and I now question both his judgment and character. This farce is clearly not about country first.

Can American truly be that gullible?

  25. It's Whatever We Want

The role of the politician is to get elected. How they get there depends on the voters. The quality of the debate is what people are willing to except. There isn't much talk about personalities in the debates because people don't want to accept that, but a lot still has to be done.

We get the government that we deserve. We elected Bush and he gave us the government that we elected. If we haven't had enough abuse, we'll vote for McCain/Palin and get more. It's just that simple.

Vote for the America, you think you deserve.
