Biden's typical commute anything but typical

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Biden’s typical commute was anything but typical Tuesday."]WILMINGTON, Delaware (CNN) – Joe Biden returned to his regular commute Tuesday afternoon, surrounded by reminders he was no longer a regular commuter.

As he has done nearly every working day for the last 35 years, Joe Biden took the Amtrak train home to Delaware — his first rail commute since being named Barack Obama’s running mate.

Biden rode in the last car, half of which was blocked off for him by Secret Service. But the talkative Delaware senator didn’t stay seated long, wandering up to the dining car to get some refreshments and chat with his fellow travelers.

“Hey, I’m the nuisance,” Biden announced to the car as the press jostled for position in the cramped aisle. “I used to ride this thing every day and nobody paid any attention.”

“If we get elected, it will be the most train-friendly administration ever,” Biden assured another passenger, moving on to the next car.

Finally arriving at the restaurant car, Biden ordered a cranberry cocktail, assuring reporters the drink wasn’t alcoholic.

“I’m the only guy you know who doesn’t drink,” Biden said, “Never had a drink in my life, too many alcoholics in my family.”

On the way back to his seat, Biden sat down to talk shop with a group that had just come from testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, prompting Biden to remark that he would have been there if he weren’t “doing this.”

Barack Obama and his surrogates tout Biden’s nightly Amtrak commute home as a testament to his roots, and his link to Washington outsider status. At both ends of the commute Biden hugged and back-slapped Amtrak workers, telling a conductor “you’re like family.”

How much has this commute cost the taxpayer? For the last 36 years if I must ask??

Who would you rather sit beside on a 2 hour train commute – Palin or Biden?

Why does anyone bring up the children. If he son was forced not to be a lobbyist by his dad you'd cry foul, now you cry foul because he was a lobbyist. Why don't we focus on Joe and Obama's records and ideas, or McCain and Palin's record and ideas. Let's get a future!

    Go Dems

I wonder if anyone else notices that all the comments made by the McCain-Palin supporters are so snide and just plain ignorant, very much like the candidates they support.

I'm sick of people talking about Biden's son. How about McCain's son who conveniently quit his job as a banker right before the bank went under in Nevada. Anybody want to talk about that..........or the 134 lobbyists running the McCain campaign.....or the lobbyist he tapped to help him figure out who is going to run his administration............I thought not!

Joe Biden has not sold his soul for the veep job. it really seems like palin mccain have done just that. they have gone down that path of deceit and once you do it is hard to reverse. Joe Biden has more humility and more integrity than pal-cain put together.

Whatever happens on Nov 4, Biden and Obama will wake up the next day with their integrity intact. Bash them all you want, but you know that they are decent people who could bring respect back to the White House and to the US.

Joe Biden is a man of honor, down to earth, and a real man who has nothing to hide. I wasn't totally sold on this VP pick initially, but he's proven himself to be just what he says he HONEST man.

    Palin...what a joke.

Joe rocks! He and Barack are way more populist than the McCains - Cindy's jewelry that she wore the final night of the RNC cost more than my HOUSE.

Now look at that, someone that has been in the public eye for many years and is likeable. Palin has been around for two weeks and people THOUGHT she was one of them. They are now seeing that she is a fake and a liar.

How much does his commute cost for the last 36 years? What does it matter? He pays for it out of his own pocket just like you and me. At least he is not using a goverment plane to fly home. The man wants to see his family at night. After his wife was killed he promised his children that no matter what he would be there for them and he kept his promise. The nerve of that man!
