McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

, , ,

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday."](CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access.  Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

the fact that she destroyed the emails before an investigation was able to be made is suspect. the fact that she is refusing to cooperate with a subopena is suspect. mcain is probably pooping his pants now (more than usual).

This woman has more drama than daytime soaps. Since her selection is a testament to John McCain's judgement, we need to keep this man out of the White House. As a matter of fact, the people of AZ need to vote him out of the Senate. Let's send him home to Cindy.

Despite blogarythms about "Obama supporters probably hacked", displaying paranoia amongst the troops as well as the leadership, the fact remains that when someone stonewalls, there's usually a reason, and not a very pretty one.

I'm not for invasion of privacy but you gotta give it to American ingunity to 'find out' at least some answers to questions about our potential VP.

If this thing goes to trial, maybe the suspects should REFUSE TO HONOR THEIR SUBPEONAS.

Oh wait, only Bush, Rove, and Palin can do that.

Typical democrat move by the same sore losers who stole all the "W"s off White House keyboards in 2001.

Sure, it's OK to do this to someone who disagrees with you politically, but let it happen to a member of the democrat party and we'll never hear the end of it!

a yahoo email account being hacked happens every day. why doesn't she use her isp provider email or use an isp that offers email accounts. yahoo from what i hear is easy to hack into. so this is a joke and just a diversion to take attention from troopergate and the market crashing.

John McCain says he is an avid supporer of Reaganomics which deregulation was a part of. Now it has finally burst a bubble, just sorry that so many people have lost investments from their 401k's that were for retirement etc.

If we Americans are stupid enough to vote Obama/Biden into office, then we'll get the dictatorship we deserve. A continuation of the Roman Empire pattern of deception and decline.

    Liberals are stupid.

i think this is another attempt to divert attention from real issues and keep the spotlight on mccain camp. iwont be surprised if it is a publicity hoax.

Just when you think that the Democrats can't go any lower, they break the law and invaid someone's privacy. How desperate. So much attention is being paid into the "trooper gate," soon those in the media who have an axe to grind will have egg on their faces.

Perhaps you should start scrutinizing the number 1 man on the Democratic ticket instead of trying so hard for nothing with Gov. Palin.

You might as well get used to her, she is here to stay. America likes and trust her.

Obama supporters do not have to waste time searching Palin's e-mail because it is enough baggage already exposed on this lady for her to resume moose hunting.

Lets observe this new claim by the McCain campaign. Obama is a destroying McCain with the economic crisis, the lack of cooperation in the investigation of trooper gate, McCain's economic is fundamentally strong quote, and with the convention bump evaporated; McCain now wants to claim someone hacked in to emails, trying to switch attention with a made up allegation. Call me paroniod, but after the outrage over lipstick, and continously lies from the McCain camp, I wont put it past them.

You DEMS are the biggest hypocrits on the face of the earth. If this was NOBAMA's e-mails that were violated you would be screaming bloody murder not to mention blaming every republican under the sun. If you can't separate a true invasion of privacy from your hateful politics, you are just plain pitiful.
