McCain and Palin joke away differences on ANWR drilling

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="McCain and Palin held a joint town hall event Wednesday."]GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (CNN) - John McCain and Sarah Palin hold opposite opinions on the prospect of drilling for oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Reserve - Palin supports drilling in ANWR. McCain opposes it. But in their first unscripted appearance together on Wednesday evening, the running mates telegraphed that they’ll just agree to disagree.

At one moment during the pair’s first joint town hall meeting, a voter inquired about their position on offshore drilling. Palin obliged, arguing for drilling off America’s coastline, but she also argued for more forcefully than McCain has in the past for drilling onshore, on lands already leased for oil exploration.

“When people are hurting, they need to tap those resources and get those sources flowing,” she said, referring to high gas prices.

Talking about onshore drilling comes easy to Palin - since becoming governor in 2006, she has pressed for more energy exploration in ANWR and elsewhere in Alaska, often taking her argument to national media outlets.

And if her remarks in Grand Rapids sounded familiar, it’s because she’s offered very similar reasoning in the past when making the case for opening up ANWR for drilling.

“There are still a lot of places in America of course that need to be tapped,” she said at the town hall. “There are proven resources in these areas in Alaska, in the Dakotas, some new finds there. We have billions and billions and billions of barrels of oil underground in the United States of America. We have hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of clean, green natural gas onshore and offshore.”

McCain and Palin’s disagreement on ANWR was brought to the fore on Wednesday when a voter asked the Alaska governor if she had been able to change’s McCain’s mind on the issue.

“Still working on it!,” Palin said, to laughter and applause.

“This meeting is adjourned,” McCain cracked.

Indeed, early on in the event, McCain seemed to pre-emptively knock down the significance of any policy disputes between the two candidates. Along with drilling in ANWR, McCain and Palin don’t see eye to eye on other issues, such as stem cell research and whether or not global warming is man-made.

“By the way, you may figure out from time to time, Sarah and I don’t agree on every issue,” he said. “What do you expect of two mavericks, to agree on everything? Eh?”

I read that Palin was telling people to not put the polar bears nor the beluga whales in the endagered species because it would get in the way of her plans.

    Same attitude with ANWR.

So please tell me the difference between the last administration and this one? Just more OIL PEOPLE going into the White House.

JUST MORE OF THE SAME!!! ........NEXT!!!

Differences like this are not a joke. Its a matter of our nation's vitality. situations like this should leave us with serious doubt as to how prepared these two (McCain, Palin) are to effectively lead the nation. They are not even familiar enough with each other to coincide policy views yet (guess that's what happens when you pick someone you've only met once). It seems like America could use a "change" from situations like this

did anyone see her response on the foreign policy experience she bring to the ticket. I'M STILL WAITING FOR THAT ANSWER. i see the mcclueless campaign hand her over to sean hannity to interview, i say this is bull, sean is in the pocket of the republican party, they need to hand her over to THE VIEW, let these women get a shot at her, then send her to comedy central to john stewart and then have answer non partisan question from the general public. last night, they gave her some baby question and still she manage to move away from the question. the republican serogate made a mess out of themselves on larry king last night. this thing is getting funny, i really didn't think smart people could really be that stupid.

Perhaps you should explain to all the parents of special needs kids that you claim to be an advocate for, just why you vetoed $275,000 from the Special Olympics budget while governor of Alaska, therefore, cutting it by half.

We adults can handle the many lies we have come to expect from you about your record, but this is particularly grievous, because with friends like you, these kids do not need any enemies

They’ll just agree to disagree.......That is the central theme of the McCain/Palin ticket. Between them, one couldn't drill an outhouse and the other couldn't get out of a mountain with multiple exits. Where are the "real leaders" of America?

why is it that whenever palin speaks, it looks as if she is about to go ape. the gop always looks angry when they speak to people. it's not impressive to look angry all of the time, and speak in a hateful way. to come across to the voters as angry, and scaring them to vote for you is getting old. you do not have to smile all of the time either, but dome and gloom is uglier, even on a pretty girl.

Sure Mrs. Stupid is FOR that ANWR drilling.. This will bring Alaska a whole lot of money and so Mrs. Sarah Abusin won't have to call for earmarks, and even SHE then can't make deficits in the Alaska's financial household. She doesn't care for Animals, living there, why should she? If drilling starts and the animals move in direction of her house (from which one you can see Russia!!!) she will simply shoot them...

Come on, the US can't effort that power abusing, truth-hiding, lying, hunting and religious possessed girl...
