McCain and Palin joke away differences on ANWR drilling

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="McCain and Palin held a joint town hall event Wednesday."]GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (CNN) - John McCain and Sarah Palin hold opposite opinions on the prospect of drilling for oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Reserve - Palin supports drilling in ANWR. McCain opposes it. But in their first unscripted appearance together on Wednesday evening, the running mates telegraphed that they’ll just agree to disagree.

At one moment during the pair’s first joint town hall meeting, a voter inquired about their position on offshore drilling. Palin obliged, arguing for drilling off America’s coastline, but she also argued for more forcefully than McCain has in the past for drilling onshore, on lands already leased for oil exploration.

“When people are hurting, they need to tap those resources and get those sources flowing,” she said, referring to high gas prices.

Talking about onshore drilling comes easy to Palin - since becoming governor in 2006, she has pressed for more energy exploration in ANWR and elsewhere in Alaska, often taking her argument to national media outlets.

And if her remarks in Grand Rapids sounded familiar, it’s because she’s offered very similar reasoning in the past when making the case for opening up ANWR for drilling.

“There are still a lot of places in America of course that need to be tapped,” she said at the town hall. “There are proven resources in these areas in Alaska, in the Dakotas, some new finds there. We have billions and billions and billions of barrels of oil underground in the United States of America. We have hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of clean, green natural gas onshore and offshore.”

McCain and Palin’s disagreement on ANWR was brought to the fore on Wednesday when a voter asked the Alaska governor if she had been able to change’s McCain’s mind on the issue.

“Still working on it!,” Palin said, to laughter and applause.

“This meeting is adjourned,” McCain cracked.

Indeed, early on in the event, McCain seemed to pre-emptively knock down the significance of any policy disputes between the two candidates. Along with drilling in ANWR, McCain and Palin don’t see eye to eye on other issues, such as stem cell research and whether or not global warming is man-made.

“By the way, you may figure out from time to time, Sarah and I don’t agree on every issue,” he said. “What do you expect of two mavericks, to agree on everything? Eh?”

With all the talk about elitism. The bottomline is that the McCain/Palin team with it's obvious ignorance of the economic and energy issues facing this country, does not represent the quality leadership that we should expect from the white elite.

Continue shooting the bears and wolves from helicopters, bury them quickly and maybe they'll turn into oil which you can drill to. If tinosaurs and humans lived together, surely it can't take that long for Alaska's wildlife to turn to oil.

    It needa a fixin!

Gov Palin simply pledge (institute law) that will not allow exporting ANWAR oil to Canada, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea. If all this oil is solely for US use and not allow the oil companies to sell on the open market for excess profit most of the American people will benefit.

She knows more about energy than the other 3.
Utilize the resources we have.....stop the enormous money drain we have paying for foreign oil. THE ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY SAVED will pay for and correct many of the other needs we have here at home. Don't be so short-sighted, people, Palin and people like her is EXACTLY what we nd for new blood and new insights to solve our problems.

And let me guess she's saying this because it will bring money into Alaska and maybe she won't have to take as many earmarks!!!!

Also, why does she talk like that "hurtin'" and "flowin'"? Is that supposed to make me feel like she's one of us? It doesn't, it's annoying and her voice drives me crazy!!!!! But then again, she did go to 5 different colleges in 6 years to earn a degree in journalism! I guess we Americas should lower our expectations that a president and vice president should be smart and know how to speak properly!!! God help us all!!! I can't believe that people are falling for this garbage again!!!!

  17. The Clear Thinking Independent Voter

I've tired of people trotting out the " Oh, I was kidding ... or Oh, it was a joke" defense when they are wrong are do something they shouldn't do.

Sorry Senator McCain, this is one voter that has heard that refrain too many times.

You are responsible. You are accountable. You have to be accurate. You and Mrs. Palin have public statements that are at opposite ends of the spectrum on ANWAR ... I believe because you didn't take the time to vett her properly. If you had, you two would have talked about this and resolved it.

By itself, this is not a big deal but it points to the larger issue of how RECKLESSLY you, JOHN McCAIN , makes decisions.

I've seen evidence that you respond to the last person that spoke to you ... to the last person to scream ... not that you have a foundational awareness of the facts and take an intelligent, cerebral position. I don't think you are very well informed.

It was reported earlier this year that you like to play "craps" at the casino. I don't want a president that plays craps on the world economic stage. Sorry, I can't vote for you and Mrs. Palin

I would bet the bank old man McCain does not know how many oil rigs are in the Gulf of Mexico.
McCain is not a maverick or reformer by any stretch. He is a hack and a Bush kool aid drinker.
