McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

, ,

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday."](CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

    To S.....
Let's face it, the Republicans have done more damage to our government in the last 8 years than all of the administrations since the "Great Depression" and now that it looks like a DEEP RECESSION is looming for the next 18-24 months, if not worse, John McCain has flip-flopped on sooo many issues since April of this year. Now the "De-Regulation pusher" is all about 'Regulation" and is running with a VP canidate that can't answer a qestion about foreign policy or economic issues without sounding like doofus... Obama is the answer not "Jed and Alley May Clampet"

s, how in the world do you relate this to Obama? Hackers love to get into anything and I'm sure as many of them, or more, are trying to hack into Obama's e-mail.
Also, please, please, take your keyboard off "Caps Lock". It is really hard to read your ridiculous rantings when you write like that.

Invasion of Privacy? Now there is a shocking statement coming from the Repugs. Gee, isn't it the Repugs that have invaded all our privacies? Go home and watch your c hildren, Sarah! Your husband obviously doesn't have the time. He is busy "sledding" all over Alaska. Don't want to see your youngest daughter pregnant do ya?

What does this have to do with Obama? NOTHING.

This was a hacker from the group "Anonymous". Has it occurred to you that other people besides Obama do not like Palin?

This just proves this country is against the McCain/Palin ticket and if they were to be elected it would be another 4 years of travesty.

This also proves SARAH PALIN'S IGNORANCE. To use Yahoo! for government business is just plain stupid. No if, and, or buts around it. McCain showed lack of judgment in picking her and she is showing lack of judgment here. Also let's not forget her asking for the trooper investigation and now opposing it.

The McCain/Palin ticket is a joke!!!!

Please! She brought this on herself by trying to be sneaky. Dirty deeds that happen in the dark - like trying to hide official emails - always come to light.

I don’t think Obama is spearing Palin. It’s the MSN finally researching what comes out of McCain/Palin's mouths.

Democrats are all for personal privacy unless the privacy is wanted by someone they disagree with. What a bunch of hypocritical SOBs.

Wow Sarah Palin is so stupid she can't even set the filters to keep her own personal e-mail account secure, how the hell is she supposed to keep our country secure.

wow the guy above is a little off the rocker. this is not a Obama attack this is the act of 4chaners who did this on their own accord. Obama isn't about to do a hack like this.

When will the people who support Obama realize that doing these stupid things hurts him? It does nothing but give sympathy and coverage to his opponents.

While I in no way condone hacking into peoples' private lives, this should serve a valuable function: Perhaps this would help Sarah realize that her views on censorship and spying and security should perhaps need adjustment. What she says in her e-mails is none of our business. Should she become president (evidently she is running for said since McCain has all but vanished), our e-mails are none of her business either.

S, you have got to be kidding. As a moderate who has not decided, it is very clear to me that McCain was the one who started a huge smear campaign, and Obama is now just responding. The GOP is notorious for huge smear campaigns that twist the facts. They called Obama a celebrity and compared him to Paris Hilton, and you want to point the finger at Obama for smearing? It's idiots like you that elect idiots like George W. Bush. Do us all a favor on election day and stay home.

The media coverage of Palin is almost out of control. I don't think I have ever seen anything like it.

  17. Palin has more experience than Obama

I like how Dems talk about the dirty tricks the RNC plays, but act as the DNC does not pull stuff like this. Keep up the two faced play it is only making more and more voters turn to McCain/Palin.

I'm glad someone did hack into her e-mail. If the McCain camp stops trying to keep her backround a covert operation then this would have never happened.

Hmm...bias some? I leave a comment well over an hour ago questioning the "Right To Privacy" and how Palin is using an unsecure email system outside of the archived government email system that the state of Alaska provides and instead of seeing that posted, there's a comment bashing Obama which has nothing to do with this story otherwise.

Who moderates this thing, Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild?

This has nothing to do with Obama, you idiot. Anyone who would vote for McCain after hearing this woman uses personal email to conduct state business is brain dead.

The Palins may be a good decent family, but as a politician Palin falsley claimed to sell the state plane on eBay when it was actually sold privately to a Republican at a loss. She claimed to say "Thanks but no thanks" on the bridge to nowhere when she was actually saying "Mother may I"- Congress killed the deal before she said "no thanks" she keeps the money then takes credit for virtuous behavior.

If this is what the dishonest McCain ticket has to offer, I say "thanks but no thanks" to the McCain-Palin administration to nowhere.

IT is the SLEAZY tactics of the Obama camp who are responsible for the email hack I am certain, they can only gain ground through lies and smears...I wonder NOW with the ECONOMY what Obama is going to do with his precious bill for the GLOBAL POVERTY ACT FOR AFRICA THAT IS 845 BILLION TO AFRICA! AND OBAMA WANTS TO RAISE TAXES!

I really hope this ELITIST and HIS HOLLYWEIRD CLAN go BACK to the HOLE they crawled out of! WE do NOT NEED OBAMA'S TAX INCREASES!

Too bad they can't hack into her past email since it has been revealed she used personal email accounts to conduct public business believing they could not be subpoenaed. It was pointed out last night on NBC news that the only other VP candidate in modern times with as little foreign affairs experience was Spiro T. Agnew. So last night news gives them something else in common besides being crooked little governors. Just remember, if she is elected and forced to resign later that makes the Speaker of the House next in line to be president. Currently that would be Nancy Pelosi.
