McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

, ,

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday."](CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

Ummmm... I don't think that anyone would hire a hacker to get a hold of Palin's email account for political purposes. They don't have to. All they have to do is look at her record...

Are they a good and decent family? Really? How do you know this? Do you know them personally? Do you call them at home? Do they invite you over for dinner? Relax...

If Palin has nothing to hide, then she shouldn't be worried. It is a crime that her email was hacked and hopefully the perpetrator will be brought to justice but I don't think it's quite time to holler 'smear tactics' just yet.

Excuse me "S", but where in this article did it say that Obama’s camp had anything to do with this email hack? Quit trying to blame the other guy! No where does it say that this was the work of the Obama team. Get real…

I can tell you this for certain. If it would have been Obama or Biden to have their email hacked the Press would be demanding justice, instead they are protecting their source.......

America is catching on to this and how the press is pushing Obama down our throats.

The way things are going make me wish it was October already, I can't wait for the surprise.

Why is Barack Obama suddenly responsible for everything SHE does wrong? Stop making him the scapegoat. Good grief! Maybe you need to wake up to the fact that she isn't this perfect creature on a 'task from God.'

s, what in the hell is wrong with you? If Sarah had nothing to hide, then she should have been more than willing to turn over any information to clear herself. If she wanted to prove to the American people that she is who she say she is, then she should have put all of her cards on the table. Like the saying goes, "there's something rotten in Denmark." Trust me, there are ways to get the information needed, "by any means necessary."

We don't know who hacked the email's but it sure wasn't a supporter of Palin's. If Sen. Obama's email was hacked , the Dems and their friends in the MSM would be all over this as a "Right Wing" dirty trick and they would hang it around McCain's neck. It sure seems quiet right now in th MSM and the Dems about this. Where is the outrage?

The group that hacked her e-mail was Anynomous, they aren't related to Obama.

Just because your candidate broke federal law by using personal email for government business, don't try to spin this as an attack.

I realize that the McCain campaign would do this to Obama (if they could) in a heart beat, but Obama doesn't campaign like that.

hahahaha it's not a smear campaign-it's a bunch of internet geeks who felt like hacking into her's incredibly easy. Also, i heard and saw from the webshots that there were only pictures of her baby sent to friends–and emails back and forth from family in her account about basic family B.S...nothin' juicy.

How stupid is this person that she is using a free mail account for State Business. Or is she using it to hide information from public records. For a long time she said she would cooperate with the probe into her wrongfull firing but now she is using G.W. Bushing play book by changing her mind and not cooperating. Looks like another coverup to me and most people. Great job Vetting his one. The Palin bounce is just about over the more people get to know her the less they like her.

How exactly is this a 'smear campaign'?

A known hacker on the internet found a way to get into Sarah Palin's emails. Emails since April 2008 – far before she was a vice presidential candidate. The emails are real as pictures not seen before, phone numbers unknown before, and people unknown before were detailed.

So instead of the crime Palin committed by using personal email for government business (she must use a government account and keep the records), you would rather allege that Obama planned all this? Get real. The hacker might have been a democratic-sympathizer, but I would hazard a guess that the hacker was trying all the politicians emails, and just succeeded with Sarah Palins.

McCain's attacks are actually causing him to fall in the polls. Obama has hardly done any attacks at all this campaign, much to the chagrin of many democrats who have wanted him to.

Obama's smear-fest against Palin continues. No Surprise. This is how the Community Organizer has run every campaign. The Thug from Chicago prefers to eliminate the opposition so he doesn't have to actually deal with them. This is just slimely Chicago politics taken to a national level. Al Capone would be proud.

  15. Blitzer is a typical treasonous neo-con

he asks his viewers, "what would you do if you were GOP strategist?"

like that's what a so-called news program should focus on at this point,

like this is all some fun game to play.

obviously, he and his neo-con cronies don't want the people to see and understand the real troubles this country is in.

    nice try, blitzer. nice try.

Oh yes, as if the Obama campaign hired the hacker to gain access into Palin's e-mail account?!? Please, don't insult the american people's intelligence. You right winger's never cease to amaze me with the bullcrap that you pull out of your behinds to throw at the liberals. This is almost as absurd as the comment that the Obama campaign has "hijacked" the investigation into Palin's firing of the State Police Chief. Give me a break.

What does she have to hide? Maybe the emails will prove that she is not a nit wit, or a bad mother, or maybe she actually has facts saying that the dinosaurs did roam the earth 4000 years ago. Maybe they will say that she wants to overhaul our foreign policy, or that she never intended on firing her ex-brother in law as a state trooper. What is she trying to hide? I love how conservatives can be so twofaced on issues when their own candidate is involved. Flip floppers all of them... Every person who thinks Palin would be a good leader also thinks Bush is doing a great job!

Maybe it was the investigators who or FBI who felt it was necessary to
hack Palin's e-mail because this is the only way to gain information
since Palin is so secretive and uncooperative with her own

What makes me wonder is that if she had been using this email to conduct state business when clearly the protocol states you're supposed to use the state/government email hosting services, is if she was doing it on purpose to try to avoid scrutiny on issues like Troopergate – that could be flagged more easily (but more easily deleted) when using her official email.

Did I see on the CNN special on Palin that she gave birth to her 1st child just over 7 months after they were married? If so, why isn't the Christian right commenting on that? If so, it would be no wonder she is so supportive of her 16/17 year old pregnant daughter. Palin pregnant out of wedlock at 21/22, daughter pregnanat out of wedlock at 16/17. God help any next generation girl in that family – 12/13???

Having Palin on the ticket was a big mistake. Obviously, she doesn't know that you can't discuss official matters using your personal email account. Did she need to be reminded of it?

And this what McCain is offering us a VP!!!!

    Where is this country going?????

If one conducts themselves with honesty, pride, and integrity, they will most likely not find themselves in the midst of such a scandal or be accused of wrong doing. Obviously Palin has not conducted herself in such a manner. If she has nothing to hide, then she should just comply with the investigation (partisan or not partisain) and get this nonsense over with.

Remember, rules make you free. If you follow them, people leave you alone!
