McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

, ,

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday."](CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

The hacker should be dragged over rusted nails over and over again... but...this has nothing to do with Obama and anyone who thinks that is blinded for their dislike for the candidate they are obviously not voting for. I really think if she would openly make herself available to press it would only do more to boost her image to that of her party and other gender-driven voters going to the gop side. She's still an empty book to me until she proves herself otherwise. She's 1/3 of the woman that Hillary is, for Hillary fought to be where she is and palin was "selected" to get women voters that will only vote base on gender. The gop ticket and palin stand for nothing that Hillary stood for... nothing.

Intelligent woman voter that votes on issues that affect me.

Who cares if her e-mail was hacked. It is nothing more than the republicans crying foul because they will not win this election. So "s" give it a rest and come to grips with the fact that Obama will win.

Obama has not "unleashed" anything on Sarah Palin. A good rule of thumb for her would be to not use her personal e-mail accounts to conduct state business. I mean, come on. I don't think anyone is making them out to be demons. I think people are revealing truths about their family and their beliefs. Truths that the American people don't want leading their country. If anyone has used ridiculous smear tactics in their campaigning I would point the finger at McCain. He has gone above and beyond with his bad politics. You need to get a reality check.

  6. The Clear Thinking Independent Voter

This is not where Americans want to see the energy of the McCain campaign. It will be viewed as an attempt at another mindless distraction.

Are we to honestly believe that the GOP sent any campaign sensitive material to Palin via Yahoo! ? If they did, the Republican Party / McCain has only shown how irresponsible they are and/or how ignorant they are around information technology.

More likely, McCain's only interest in this is to draw attention away from

1.) the investigation of Governor Palin in the Alaska State Legislature .... or
2.) recent media scrutiny on Palin's repeating lies and half-truths ( Bridge-to-No-Where, Sold it on E-Bay for a profit, etc.) ... or
3.) on Carly Fiorina telling a radio station that Mrs. Palin wasn't qualified ... or
4.) from John McCain 1st being against a bail out of AIG ... before he was for it ... or
5.) from John McCain stating 16 times that the "fundamentals of the economy are strong ... and then trying to spin it around and citing the AMERICAN WORKER as what he meant in a CHEAP pandering effort ... or
6.) from reports that Ms. Palin was overheard referring to Obama as Sambo and Clinton as the "B" word ... or
7.) that ... Mr. Reform Washington ... John McCain ... can only revert back to Washington's .. "form a commission to study the economy" tactic in the wake of the financial turmoil this weak.

This e-mail story is a distraction. Let's see some focus on one of the 6 items above.

What is fascinating is to see the accounts used for government oriented emails. Alaska has laws (and reasons) for retaining emails on their .gov

To see officials like Palin trying to circumvent it is disturbing. She has a right to have a personal private account. But by directing people to use her yahoo account for government business, as is now reported, she created her own additional and new ethics problem.

It is not the content of the personal emails voters are finding disturbing, it is the increasing indicators of Palin's own abuse of office.

  8. Obama!

Yes, it's bad that someone hacked into her email account. What's worse, however, is that she was using her personal email to hide conversations from her government account. THIS is what we should be scared of. She has a lot of hiding going on, and as we slowly chip away at the lies, we're uncovering a very manipulative, calculating woman. I want a REAL leader in the White House. Go O!

You know, I doubt people would be doing stuff like this if Palin would just come clean, be available to the media, cooperate in the Troopergate investigation, and otherwise let the American voters know who she really is, how she really operates and what she really stands for. Same thing with the internet rumors – people believe gossip because we have nohing else even remotely credible to go on except what little the mainstream media is covering and has been able to confirm.
Let me be clear: I'm no Palin fan and McCain lost this white woman's vote when he picked her, but the kid who invaded her privacy stepped over the line and should be punished. However, I also think, she invited just this kind of thing by hiding from the American people and repeatedly lying to the voters.

  14. Republicans Regret the Palin Pick

Yes, we agree there needs to be an investigation!!!! We need to know why she was using a Yahoo email account for official State business? The only comment is for who ever has any emails is for them to destroy then?? What is she so afraid of and why will she not cooperate with the trooper gate investigation? Too many questions going unanswered. McCain picking Palin was believed to be a rash decision and events every day are proving this to be true. Either she was not properly vetted or she was and the McCain campaign thought they could keep this stuff under wraps. Either way his judgment, or lack thereof is in question. She was a bad pick and we will lose this election because of it.

So funny. Palin has been using an "off the record" email account to conduct PUBLIC business, thereby lying to and misleading the people. The only thing her supporters can say? Of course... Obama did it.

Nevermind that Palin has done something wrong... it's obviously Obama's fault she did it.

Please. Obama's negative ads against McCain are at least true ( is your friend!). McCain's ads against Obama are so obviously false and pitiful.

She wasn't hacked by Obama, she was hacked by 4chan. That is not a website that is friendly to Obama, or McCain, or any governmental official. They're anarchists.

Are you in some kind of land of make believe? Are you really saying this is some big conspiracy theory and that Obama and the Democrats are "just being mean" to her? She will need to be able to take a lot more of a beating than this if she is going to be VP – the media is a lot more harsh than any democrat. And maybe JUST MAYBE she isn't coming out smelling like roses because SHE DOESN'T!

And ps – she is an idiot and wouldn't know the truth if it hit her in her Tina-Fey-Beauty-Pagent-Pitbull wearing lipstick FACE!

They are such liars. I don't believe anybody broke into her e-mail. Palin and her family need to put a hitch their trailer and go back to Alaska. She is as qualified as my pet cat.

Dont be an idiot!! Yeah blame all the worlds problems on Obama.

Seeing as how Palin wont coorperate and release her emails, whats the problem with seeing them, unless she did something wrong.

I just love how her and McCain can scream someone broke the law but yet she refuses to talk about Troopergate, none of the people issued subpeonas will talk. Oh they're above the law but us common folk are not?

    Give me a friggin brake!!!!!

Yeah S go ahead and vote McCain, vote against your best interests.
