McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

, ,

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday."](CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

Why is it every time something goes wrong it's Obama's fault?

A just to keep things straight McLiar and Paliar started the smears on day one of the convention. Then McLiar had the nerves to say" if you would have done as you were told boy, the campaign would have been different.

    Get a life.

Where is the proof as you are suggesting that it was the Obama camp that hacked into Palin's email? Where is the proof. Get a life will you and quit whining. Can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. And tell McCain and Palin to stop lying about their records and Obama's proposals. McCain claiming to be a regulator when for 26 years he has been a staunch de-regulator helping to cause much of the economic problems today. Give us a break.

Oh, please. Smear shmear. Palin is damaging herself-no one NEEDS to smear her. America is actually waking up to the disaster that is Sarah Palin. It's becoming more and more clear that this woman's views are way too extreme and that the only thing she seems prepared for is to repeat the talking points that have been spoon fed to her.

    Had enough? Vote Obama!

You obviously don't know how to view a high-road campaign or turn off your caps lock. McCain is doing the same things Bush and Rove did in 2004 and 2000. Win at all costs, despite the truth and what's best for the country. You were wrong with Bush twice .... trust your own history and don't vote again. Please.

Why would hacking Palin's email be a smear tactic? If she is using a yahoo account for government business, that is a violation of the law.
Why is no one talking about the issues in this election?

Funny how you don't mention that these emails indicate that she was using her personal email account to conduct government business. All government business is required to be conducted using government email accounts so they can be tracked and recorded into the archives. What is she trying to hide?

Since the government can read private e-mail without a warrant, we should be able to read the email of public servants. It is only fair. What do they have to hide? Why should they object if they are not doing anything wrong? It is only for their own safety. We need to know if they are terrorists. Reading private emails of public officials makes us all safer. It is for the children. And we all want children to be safer, don't we?

Please answer why would a gov. official, be conducting gov. official business on there personal account? Yes it's wrong that someone would hack GOV. Palin e-mail account, this what's going to happen when you place a inknown in front of the American people, to become VP of the US, without that person being vetted. McCain thought they he could dupe the American people with anything. But the question here is why would Sarah Palin, conduct Gov. official e-mails on her personal e-mail account. Yahoo!!!!!!This again proves Bad Judgement on the McCain side. Most professional people know that this goes against company policy, in her case Gov. policy. As we can see she doesn't respect the very policy's she swore to uphold.

Anyone stupid enough to ignore their own internal internet security in favor of a less secure one just to circumvent the law is an idiot's idiot.

that being said, they shouldn't have been hacked either.

I, unlike S, am glad that America is finally waking up to the fact that Palin and her family are not the perfect image they presented, and that Palin and McCain are both bad politicians since neither one can handle being called on thir bs without getting angry and vengeful.

OH PLEASE, save the drama!!! McCain/Palin will not win this election and if by chance they do, believe me it will be a repeat of corruption at the polls (remember your man Bush)? This is no doing of the Obama campaign. Do you know how easy it is for the average person to hack into a personal email? BTW from what I hear, she isn't even supposed to have a personal non-government email account . Just to show you how backwards she is when it comes to running things. She may be a nice person, but not even close to being ready to run a country.

I have not seen Obama smear her at all. He specificly said "families are off limits" he stuck to her word. However, Sarah Palin attacked Michelle Obama and John McCain had a video out about Obama's kids which "lo and behold" disappeared after he made his point. Race baiting has taken place on the Republican side. If they are so decent why are they trying so hard to hide the "firing". Why are McCain's high powered attorney's up in Alaska to try to squash this case? Obviously there must be something to hide or they will let the case go forward. So to blame all of this on the Obama campaign seems a little foolish and just a little desparate, don't you think? Look at the polls and see where they are going.

Oh my god, who cares?!?!?! CNN, you are not the E! News channel. Stop reporting like you are.

A sample of what may be next from CNN "Palin takes Track to school on Monday mornings - McCain camp says she's a good mom"

Or, a sample of one of their analysis pieces:

"Obama tells campaign manager that he woke up tired today.Appears that Race is getting to him"

Give me some real news please. For example "Obama responds to AIG bailout" or "McCain responds to AIG bailout"

The McCain campaign probably had her e-mail hacked themselves, as a means to get all the messages deleted before the "troopergate" investigation could go through them. Whoever did this destroyed evidence in an ongoing criminal investigation.
