McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

, ,

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday."](CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

So, with all the "bailing" out by the Federal Reserve, doesn't that put the Feds in control of private sector industries??????

We are heading for a disaster. Ron Paul did his best to wake us up.

    Thanks for posting this CNN!

The comment from s is crazy, why would Obama want to smear Palin, she needs no help in that department. Palin is a smear all by herself. And Obama is so above this nonsense. The responsibility lies right here with Palin. Soon all the dirt will be uncovered and brought out to the light.

    Re: s

Hey, sticks and stones. There's been plenty of smeaing going on of Obama and Biden too. Both sides have their hands dirty. It's called politics. And no one running in this campaign is an angel. All that said, hacking e-mails goes beyond the pale, though if you think Palin's the only target, you're mistaken. While McCain claims he doesn't use computers, I'm sure someone is trying to get at Obama and Biden's personal files too. This is just the nature of politics in the 21st Century. Had Watergate – the Republicans' "finest hour" – occurred in 2008 it would have all been done online...

This crime can plague anyone and the solution to this problem is simple...make it a capital offense punishable by death. But as we all know, liberals are not big on criminal punishments.

Other way around! McCain Camp set this one get people to feel sorry for her....

Did you hear her last night. She sounded like a sick child...

Stump the Candidate.....!!! Little or no response to the questions at all. This chick is truly dumb.... What a side show this has been for the last 3 weeks. They are sitting together answering questions just in case her "mind" blows up and John can try to rescue her.

This is not a Game Show.... She needs to answer questions and stop going around them like a "baby"..... Beauty Got her where she is and I do hope Beauty doesn't put her in the White House.... We are screwed for sure with this "nonThinker" However, I must admit we have had a chance to enjoy the moment. Since her has gone down hill from there......

This is not a smear campaign!!!!!!!!! But I find it ridiculous that a politican would have the foresight to use a private email account to conduct state business, so that the emails could remain private. That is not transparency in government we can believe in. Its Cheny, Bush politics we need to run from.

S, you seem to live in a world where everything that happens is blamed on the Jones down the street. There are people out there working to undermine both campaigns. Just because it is an attack on Sarah Palin it automatically comes from the Obama camp ? Wake UP

Isn't it funny that this should happen to try and divert some of the attention from the fact that McCain/Palin have no economic plan – it was probably someone in the McCain camp that did it. The McCain ticket can't win with the issues – they have to make it seem like they're getting smeared and have people feel sorry for them – how pathetic!

Seems to me that these are the people supporting the governments right to read out e-mail without permission. Why should the reverse be such a big deal? Does she have something to hide? Of course she does.

Republican Hypocrisy: We can read your e-mail but stay away from ours.

Here is a hint. It was the McCain campaign...why? because she has lost her victim roll and needs it back, and because the supposed hacker was smart enough to get into her account, but not smart enough to get anything substantial.

    To S,
Do you have proof that the Obama camp did it? I'm not an Obama supporter but there is a law called, You are innocent until proven guilty. May I remind you that both the Republicans and Democrats are both lying. It's up to the voters to educate themselves especially now that the economy is in great trouble. If American economy collapse, the whole world is affected.

Even Karl Rove said McCain is a liar. Palin is a VP choice to simply placate and buy the women GOP vote. Republicans get to say "Hey, look at us, we're progressive, too."

And the stupid American voters fell for it.

If McCain wins, we'll have four more years of what we have now.

But let me ask you this: do you have enough health insurance? Do you make over 250K? Are you comfortable with a President who is ridiculously out of touch with the American people?

    Vote McCain. Great idea.

As a "responsible" government official, she should NOT have been using a personal e-mail acct. to conduct government business.

Although I in now way support anyone hacking into others' accounts, this was bound to happen, and that's the reason for private accounts.

Palin is irresponsible. After viewing some of her e-mails that were posted online, it makes me wonder what she does all day long on those blackberries. Trivial nonsense going on while she's being paid.

I hope the hackers found some evidence that can be used in the investigation about her firing the boss of her ex-brother-in-law. She's got to be guilty of that charge–otherwise she wouldn't be putting so much into covering up. She's paranoid for a reason!

Anyone's Yahoo email account can be hacked. Use a more secure email server if you want more privacy Governor Palin. If the Republicans get their way everyone's email will be read by the government. To blame this on Senator Obama is absolutely ridiculous. But way would that surprise me?

She's lied over and over and over. Now she's trying to hide something. We need transparency on whatever it is. We can't just vote for a female for the fact that she puts a gleam in mcwars eyes.

We've had secrecy and deceit for 8 years. ENOUGH !!!!

HAHA you are blaming Obama of smear tactics. Hilarious! What is the blatant lies that McCain has been puting out there. Give me a break. McCain and Palin are basically smearing themselves. How about you not worry about these silly stories and try to tie them to Obama, and wait till the debates about the real issues of the country. Most people don't give a darn about Palin's email account. It's probably a lot of SPAM just like the words that come out of her mouth.
