McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."
The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.
FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.
"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."
Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.
The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.
Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

I've always been with the thought that if there isn't any dirt to play in, you won't get dirty. What's the problem? If Palin and family are good decent family than facts about their life shouldn't make a differance. Why hide it unless, of course, it's not that righteous.
Unfortunately, as a public leader and worker FOR the tax payers, her email is not private. The email system was purchased by and for the people of the State of Alaska.
Many states have ruled that email is public record and there are hundreds of cases of emails being accessed for any number of reasons. There is probably a process for accessing any emails from anyone in Alaska's public office.
She should follow McCain's path and just not learn how to use email....

Funny how the fact that Palin's email got hacked needs an investigation, but "troopergate". . . not so much.

I thought that 'spying' on one's neighbor was central to the GOP platform.
The question is why would she even bother to use a private e-mail account for state business? This raises questions about how accountable the governor and her staff are. Another important question it raises is about the transparency of government. If we the public can see what our government is doing, then how accountable can it be?
Why won't she and her staff appear before the inquiry? This goes the poin that she and the McCain campaign made about being reformers. I thought that reformers would make government more open and transparent so that the public could be kept in the loop. I guess there was something that I missed in that idea.
It was carried out by a hacking group known as Anonymous. I Googled ‘Anonymous Hacking Group’ and here is what I found. Anonymous hacked SOHH[dot]com, a hip-hop music site, and covered with Nazi propaganda and racial epitaphs( source MTV 2007). They also released a statement that they wanted to dismantle the Church of Scientology (source cnet news June 2008). This is by no means a smear conducted by Barack Obama. I would find it hard to believe that someone of African American dissent would get an anti semitic group to run his "smear campaign". Do everyone a favor and research the news you read before you make uneducated statements to confuse others.

It is terribly sad that the political process in this country has gotten to "destroy at all cost". Identity theft is a major problem we face. It would be nice if the people behind this, that are so proud of themselves for this despicable act would put their illegal talents to better use. Why don't they find Osama's email account or any of the many terrorist who really want to kill us! I hope they and anyone who posted the information – that the knew to be illegal – are prosecuted.

Sarah Palin is asking for pain. She already contradicts herself in mid-sentence trying to answer the simplest of questions. This will only hurt the GOP campaign more. She'll have a real rough time with Biden in the debate. He knows what he's talking about.
I agree with you S. Someone in the media really needs to take the lead and expose Obama for his lies and his smear tactics. The media is doing America a HUGE disservice.
I am an informed voter through my own research and reading up on both candidates, I couldn't rely on the biased media to give me the information I needed to make up my mind.

She should not have used public 'E' mail for official state business. That is why there exists a SECURE 'E' maill address for the Govenor of Alaska !!! If Public addresses, istead of protected sites, THIS very thing can happpen. Here's the deal, if she was TRYING to avoid exchange of info about anything to do with State business and used a Public 'E' mail address she was negligent .............in the long run she accomplished nothing. I support Obama and I too would be angry ; but, a public address can always be just that............PUBLIC.
