McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

, ,

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday."](CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

Naturally this should be investigated. It would be nice though if the McCain camp would support the "Troopergate" investigation with the same amount of determination!

  2. ltd1974- Ohio for Obama

Rove said Palin was a "political pick" just as Sen. Barack Obama's choice of Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden was, and that she is not the most qualified candidate. Biden, well-versed in foreign policy issues after more than three decades in the Senate, makes up for the Illinois senator's lack of experience in that area. Palin has been governor for less than two years, and was mayor of small-town Wasilla before that.

Sarah Palin didn't support the bridge to nowhere after congress pulled their backing. Then Alaska kept the money and Sarah is still trying to get earmark money for the same bridge. She claims to have been to Ireland and Iraq. Her plane stopped to refuel in Ireland. That's it. She never was in Iraq. She refused to have the investigation into what really happened when she fired everyone that was involved with the officer that was divorcing her sister. Does anyone see the line of bull that flies out of this candidate's mouth. Staunch Republicans should be pulling their hair out! We have whiney whimpy as a candidate that has voted with George over 90 percent of the time and the empty headed fool they picked to run with him. She is a bigger idiot than he is. Our economy is in the toilet and our party has picked these boneheads. Where is the collective intelligence for this party.

Now, here is a matter that's important enough-hacking someone's personal mail traffic-but hardly rises to the level of abuse of governmental power. Yet McCain Palin are seeking a lawsuit to get the alleged hackers, while at the same time suing, on several fronts, for stop of information an admitted abuse of position by Gov Palin.

They're on the same, lawyer-parsed and -dominated way of governance that the Bush administration has been perfecting. Talk about lack of transparency; that is already the hallmark of McCain/Palin. I'd like to say I'm surprised.

If I was Sarah Palin, since this is federal law, I would get an expert to follow the invasion and have the person (s) prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Remember the kid that got 20 years or more for something like that.

But this type of thing just shows the thugs that populate obama's campaign. They did the same thing to Hillary and worst. But then when you have the Chicago gangland behind you, I guess you will do anything and obama seems to be doing it.

National security expert Sarah Palin...right. Hasn't got enough sense to protect her own e-mail with any of the hundreds of commerical products available to prevent hacking.

Good luck, Sarah, keeping tabs on that daily security report the Pres gets each morning.

The trail will lead back not to Obama but it will lead back to some of his high profile advisers.
    Similar to water gate.
He has many young people who are very on line savy and I am sure they know how to hack into peoples email accounts. He has raised hundreds of mii=llions of dollars and I am sure now that Palin has reach the same celebrity status as Obama his campaign will stop at nothing to find dirt on her.
Even if it is breaking into her email account to find dirt

Gov Palin wants an investigation for discover who did what to her email account. There are three important issues here. 1) Should she benefit from an investigation she wants, when she will not cooperate in an investigation which the State of Alaska wants; 2) should she be allow to get away with the same unethical tactic of as the Bush aides in Washington -. using that email system for official business in order to avoid Freedom of Information oversight; and 3) the legal implications of someone hacking a personal email account in order to reveal an unethical or illegal use of that email account.

PS: If you want to play "Stump the Candidate" ask about the Bush Doctrine.

What's interesting about this article is that there's no mention of the contents of her personal emails. Based on the screenshots (if they are to be taken as factual) she clearly violates the law by using a personal email address to conduct state business.

That alone should be investigated regardless of how the information was obtained.

Sounds like she ought not use a personal email system like Yahoo to send business related email. Sounds like her judgement might be lacking...

If there is nothing to hide, then why is she hiding? She is a liar and can not be trusted. Palin's tactics would destroy our Government. She is not smart enough to try to lie and misled the US, but she think she is, that is very dangerous. We should not gamble to see if McCain/Palin win in November, She should be removed from the ticket. I am a true Obama supporter, but the Republicans need to do something with Palin. Someone need to let her know that she is truly outside of her sandbox.

Stop breaking the law by using personal e-mail for official government business.

    Release your tax records.

Live up to your word and talk to Troppergate investigators.

Answer questions about your record and experience!

What a shame. Notice that this never happens to a Democrat candidate. Simple reason: Those who are conservative or support Republicans don't use their tallents for such idiotic destruction.

The Democrat supporters and the left are always angry and try anything and everything to destroy people. The end justifies the means.

Can't want to read all the angry comments from the typical lefty that is CNN's primary audience in 3.....2.......1

We are not going to fall for this one. This is a stunt pulled by Republican Operatives trying to change the national conversation from the REAL issues like the economy to fake outrage about how the mean people on the left are picking on St. Sarah.
