McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

, ,

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday."](CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

Give me a break! We have endured Bush's intervention, listening in and changing voters votes for how many years now and a major problem is Palin's emails????? Is she stupid or what. They are on the internet. They are fair game.

S, you sound silly. Typical GOP response - blame Obama for their many mistakes and lies.

This hacker group, Anonymous, entertains me quite a bit. First they hack the Scientology website, now Sarah Palin. The common connection between Palin and Scientology is their fraudulent nature. Looks like Palin has been exposed putting official business on her personal email account. Isn't that a violation of the FOIA in Alaska?

What's shocking and illegal is that Palin was using personal e-mail accounts to conducts government business. What's shocking and illegal is that Palin then deleted those accounts when they contain Troopergate evidence.

Not a lot of sympathy here.

Well let's save everyone a lot of wasted time and money. All he has to do is call Rove and ask who he used to hack into the account. Case closed, not let's move on and get back to the REAL ISSUES.

I am so tired of hearing people saying Obama has something to do with this. It is just crazy, I am sure the people that did this to Palin, would have done the same thing to Obama if he would have used a personal email account to do state business. Whoever did this should be punished to the maximum because its just plain wrong but I am sure Obama had nothing to do with it.

Hey "s" – Who said this had anything to do with Obama? Sounds like a hacker trying for "street cred". You're the one doing the smearing.

I am unemployed, but I wouldn't not vote Republican, even if they offer me a job.

Palin is not taking all the women votes a they believe, I hear a lot of negative comments against her from many womens.

I heard that the e-mail hack was a ploy to get Sarah Palin back in the spotlight.

S, you must realize that the McCain camp is also trying to smear Barack. Remember the false reports that Obama is a Muslim?
Sarah Palin may be a good and decent person but things like Palin's support of the Bridge to Nowhere, a pork barrel project need to be talked about. Palin's hometowns civic center which has cost her town over $ 1.5 million dollars. This project is still in court, so her hometown still is paying more.
Are these smear tatics or just getting the information out on an unknown candidate who is one heartbeat away from the oval office.

Maybe if she'd used her Alaskan govenment e-mail account to conduct state business instead of playing cute like Karl Rove using the e-mail account to "lose" a million e-mail messages, she wouldn't be having these problems....

S – stop with your rethuglican lies. Obama has not once talked negatively about palin. People are just seeing the ugly truth about her and don't like it. But Palin has smeared and attacked Obama shamelessly since and at the RNC. If you consider lying continuously, shooting animals from a helicopter, declaring that we might have to go to war on Russia, firing her ex brother in law because he was married to her sister, refusing to testify in an ethics probe that she said she initially would all good and decent then I question your morals. But your a rethuglican so anything goes with you people.

  18. Canuck for Obama

The Palins may be good...but decent? Not too certain of that. Let's see....she was pregnant when she got married, she now has a pregnant 17 year old, history of drugs with the kids, a husband who was a member of a party that wanted to secede from the US and his wife tells that group "Keep up the good work!". If Obama had those in his past the Reps would have been all over him! She was for the bridge then against the bridge but kept the money – she was open to the investigation and then said no to it. One lie after another – one cover-up after another. I would throw the guys in jail that hacked her email account because that's just wrong.....but don't call her or her family decent! They are far from it.....most of us are far from it as well but we're not putting ourselves up there as holier than thou!!!

    To "s" (first commentor)

Somehow I doubt that the Obama campaign did this...boy would that be stupid. Nobody is saying that the Palins are demons...just gun-toting, moose-shooting, religious nut jobs. Good people yes, but nut jobs all the same.
I still don't understand how people support this pair. If you have some kind of religious conviction or moral objection to the Democraic platform, then fine...I can respect that and understand how you might be a republican. Other then that, these yahoos have driven us into the ground. McCain and Palin are no different than the average Palins case she is probably much more to the right than average. They will not bring anything different to government then we already have.
So if you like the way things are, or have a moral obligation to do so, then by all means vote McCain. Otherwise, please put aside whatever other objections you might have for Obama and vote for the good of the country.

With so many lies coming from the Repugs, you have to ask is this the truth or more spin so we can talk about something other than the economy/issues? Don't put it past them.

Sarah Palin has soooo very much to hide. We all know that Obama's campaign has nothing to do with this violation of privacy. But, with Palin's closet so full of skeletons, the public is getting increasingly curious, and ANGRY about her not being open and honest. What is she hiding? In the end, it won't matter. She's losing supporters and interest rapidly. She was nothing more than a novelty and diversion to take the focus off of Obama. It worked, but her 15 minutes are almost up. Good riddance!

It's a despicable invasion of her privacy but it's ridiculous to suggest that the Obama-Biden campaign had anything to do with it. I mean, why would they bother with it when all they have to do is stand back and watch the over-hyped, under-qualified former weather girl self-destruct all on her own.

So now it's Senator Obama's fault that someone hacked into Ms. Palins's email just like it's Bill Clinton's fault that the major financial institutions in this country are collapsing. Please, give us a break. Wake up America and don't reward these fools with four more years.

And of course, this is Obama's if anybody in the campaign cares enough or is low enough to do something like this. As if there are not thousands of people out there who have nothing better to do than hack into whatever they can get into.

Get a life, people, get a grip. Obama and the Democrats are not smearing Sarah Palin - she's doing quite a good job of that all by herself. I haven't even heard her name mentioned by the campaign all week. They're not running against her - they are running aginst McCain.

Any smearing that's being done is being done by the press and by ordinary people like me who have a brain in their heads and can see through this woman and who realize she certainly does not represent the kind of family values that matter to me, nor does her agenda match mine. There is a whirlwind of activity swirling around via email in this country with the FACTS about her, not made-up tactics.

This woman does not vote with her uterus.
