Senior McCain aide skewers New York Times

CNN

Watch: A McCain audience member condemns the media coverage of Sarah Palin.

(CNN) - McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt accused the New York Times Monday of being “in the tank” for Barack Obama’s presidential bid, and charged the Democrat’s team with a “campaign of intimidation” directed at his critics.

“Whatever by the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization,” said Schmidt, on a conference call with reporters. “It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks Senator McCain, attacks Governor Palin and excuses Senator Obama.

“There is no level of outrage directed at his deceptive ads. There is no vetting...This is an organization that is completely, totally 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate,” said Schmidt, saying later: “We would hope in the last 43 days of this campaign… that there is a restoration to some degree of a level of symmetry in coverage.”

The former Bush adviser has been an increasingly vocal media critic. Earlier this month, he accused journalists of being on a “mission to destroy” Sarah Palin, and called a Times investigative report on the vetting process that preceded her selection as McCain’s running mate a “work of fiction.”

Schmidt also told reporters on the call, “There is no question that there is a fierce campaign of intimidation directed at any critic of Obama’s” by his campaign.

But McCain aides backed away from claims last week that Obama had pressured Senator Hillary Clinton into backing out of an appearance at a rally where Governor Sarah Palin would be in attendance, and of pushing organizers to disinvite the Republican VP nominee, with campaign manager Rick Davis saying instead that the incident demonstrated a “failure of leadership” by the Democratic nominee.

Everyone: Vote Obama! I'm sick of this profit thing some people have going on. Why shouldn't I also be entitled to everything a millionaire has. Obama has promised it to me. The rest of you all will be paying 50% taxes but at least your health care will stink as much as mine does. So take that pipe and smoke it.

They seem to forget that the NYT endorsed McCain in the primary elections - but of course that does not fit their victimhood narrative. Keep whining, losers!

Excuses Excuses Excuses. Excuses aren't going to change the poll numbers Johnny boy. Why is McLame so concerned about Sen. Obama's rockstar appearance. Doesn't he has his own on his ticket? The New York Times has every reason to cover Sen. Obama more. He's the one coming up with real plans and all you do is copy them. If this were school, you will get an "F" for cheating. Come up with your own ideas.

Sorry everyone! I forgot we were talking about the times. I was still hung over from the WSJ calling him unpresidential. I wonder if he can say conservative media. I will cover up the truth of the conservative media by attacking the liberal media. No one will know that I called out by the guys that usually support me if I attach the guys who usually support the opponent.

He is not saying what HE is going to do about it. Wasn't he in the Senate? Didn't he see this coming with all the mortage companies? GOD what if he actually gets in?????

I'm an independent but I'm voting Republician - AND JOHN MCCAIN IS NOT GEORGE BUSH!!!! DA!!

Why don't you also post a link to the NYTimes article which the McCain team was complaining about? It's an article which reports that McCain's campaign manager was paid $30,000 per month by Fannie Mae as a lobbyist, trading in on his ties to McCain!

Yep – agree with you totally. Obama is never written in a bad light. they never look into his voting 'present' too many times, his lack of foreign policy (had to go on a world tour this year to prove he had experience). its just unbelievable.

I truly beleive that if Clinton was running for president she would be way ahead in the polls now. obama is an empty suit and we dont want him as president. – ever

If McShame had done his home work well by properly vetting Sarah Palin, his campaign would not be in this confrontational mess. Rather, Charles Gibson and the press have done a better job vetting Palin than McCain. This is a poor judgement by McCain and his is not fit to be a president. They ain't seen nothing yet!

  14. Take 2 to tango

History shows that in times of National crisis, people are vulnerable to the lies and promises of the DO-nothing but promise everything demagogues.

Look at Europe in the 1930s and you will see clearly the direction Americans are taking. Obama is counting on fear in order to gain votes that he has done nothing to merit.

I guess the gullible will fall for any line as long as the liar is pointing the finger at the people currently in power.

What should the NYT do, make up bad things to report about Obama just to keep the tally even with McCain? You already have your base energized with your female Cheney (subpoenas are just paper) candidate, you don't need to use the 'liberal media' are against us rally cry too.

My Republican husband can't even defend himself anymore with me. I think he is going to abstain from voting – unless I can convince him to vote Obama. It would be a stretch, but might be possible if Obama announces some Republicans he would consider for cabinet positions prior to the election.

How can the media be in the tank? They are just reporting facts. If you don't do anything wrong, why should you worry about what the NY Times is reporting. McCain says things that he can't back up. That is his problem.
