[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/09/24/art.lbush.gi.jpg caption="Laura Bush said she has confidence in Palin."](CNN) - First Lady Laura Bush told CNN Wednesday Sarah Palin lacks experience in foreign policy, but quickly added the Alaska governor is "a very quick study."
Asked by CNN's Zain Verjee if she thought Palin's resume included sufficient foreign policy experience, Bush said, "Of course she doesn't have that."
"You know, that's not been her role," she continued, "But I think she is a very quick study, and fortunately John McCain does have that sort of experience."
The McCain campaign has pointed to Palin's gubernatorial service as head of the Alaska National Guard, part of which is deployed in Iraq, as experience in foreign policy.
But in the interview with CNN, Bush reiterated she has "a lot of confidence" in Palin.
"She's got a lot of really good common sense, and I think that's very important," Bush said. "She also has executive experience from being a governor and a mayor, and I'm thrilled to have the chance to vote for Sarah Palin on the Republican ticket."
Bush also said she agreed with those who have charged Palin is being treated unfairly because she is a woman.
"I do think there's a little bit of that going on, and I think it's to be expected," she said.
Laura Bush is in New York Wednesday promoting global literacy. She also met with political dissidents from around the world Tuesday, including a Burmese monk.
Laura, first you step up and help defend (rightfully so) Michelle Obama in her comments of loving America.
Now, you say the obvious (not taking Team McCain's idiotic position of she's right next to Russia, so she's got experience).
Wow, no wonder many people like you. Can't stand what has happened to this country under your husband's guidance, but we like you.
Now, I disagree that there's been sexism on part of the media. And, before all of Palin's friends show up, remember that it was Obama himself who said "her family, and especially her children, are off limits."
So, it hasn't been Team Obama, it hasn't been any of his surrogates.
And, as before, when Palin said that Obama-Biden were attacking her, please show us what specificically went down where she was treated unfarily because of her gender.
Well, of course, besides the fact that McCain won't let her speak to the press, answer ANY questions from reporters, or otherwise, let her out of his sight. Almost like a Type A, over-steroided boyfriend.
Oops, did I just paint an ill-tempered man, say like the image we get of McCain and his hasteful reactions to virtually anything?
Bush also said she agreed with those who have charged Palin is being treated unfairly because she is a woman.
***************************************************************************** I agree too, and the people who are treating her unfairly are John Mccain and their campaign who have given us the impression that they don't trust her to have an open dialogue in public.
She does lack foreign policy experience, just as Obama does. So what is the point of the story?
Sexist...
/sarcasm
Laura should know. Foreign policy has been a dismal failure under the Bush administration.
Which would you rather have: an experienced president with an inexperienced vice-president or an inexperienced president with an experienced vice-president? Which do you prefer: new blood or experience? You can't have both.
This just in! Laura Bush is SEXIST!
and she was allowed to say that?
just like cheney she will study .......... and then do and say the wrong and bad things we have seen in the last 8 y ears..
palin = cheney wiht lipstick and high heels
what could she say about her? she is not dumb
The ONLY thing that has been sexist about the coverage of Palin is the question about being able to raise a family doing such a tough job as VP. That question has no place since it is not being asked of other candidates, BUT everything else is fair game.
The Republicans are asking for special treatment of Palin because she is a woman and the press is saying no way. At some point I would like to think that the American public is going to say enough hiding her in the closet, let her think on her feet and address the press. The election is only 6 weeks away, how much longer can they keep her hidden?
Fair is fair!
VERY TRUE, BUT HER COMMON SENSE STINKS!!!!!!!
Obama supporters will say the same thing about him... and will probably say he learns faster than Palin. I guess one thing to ask is whether or not Laura thinks Obama is a fast learner.
LOL. You mean being able to see Russia from her house isn't enough. Shocking.
Honey – I like you but your husband is an idiot.
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY ADULTHOOD I AGREE WITH MRS BUSH!! BUT PLEASE DONT TRY AND DRESS IT UP YOU SAID WHAT IS THE TRUTH,ALEAST THERE IS ONE IN THE BUSH FAMILY WHO DONT LIE!!! THANKS MRS BUSH!!! I THANK GOD FOR YOU!!!
PRESIDENT OBAMA WILL BE TAKING OVER THE WHITE HOUSE REAL SOON!!!, I KNOCK ON DOORS, I CALL PEOPLE EVERYDAY WITH THE PHONE BANK,I DO COOKS OFF, SEND MONEY EVERY PAYDAY!!
I always knew Laura was the smart one.
I'm surprised she didn't comment on inquiries regarding 'how one would go about removing a book from the library'
JUST WHAT does Laura Bush know? Since when is SHE an authority on who has what experience? We do not need the "spouse" of our leaders giving us opinions on who is or isn't experienced.
But thanks any way Laura for the kudos.
Sarah Palin will do just fine with the experience she has.
It's obama who needs to prep up. He has NO foreign experience what so ever. A year being "present" in the Senate then another year spent running for a job not qualified for does not impress me on qualification. Also, Community service does not qualify as foreign policy unless it's done in the PEACE CORPS ! Even then! It's very Questionable.
WASP!!! WomenAgainstSarahPalin
Laura Bush for president!!
McCain has nothing!
His judgment was to drag Palin into this.
This is the end of both of them, as it should be.
Straight Talk Express Laura Bush has more foreign experience than Palin.....
Obama / Joe 2008
This is the only person in the current administration I have any respect for. She is an honest woman just like when she defended Michelle Obama. Now is the McCain camp going to call her sexist?
Not only does she lack foreign policy expereince but she lacks character. Check out any Alaskan wolf hunting videos to see what this girl has been up to. We were all outraged when the Michael Vick dog-fighting operation came to light. Where is the outrage here? This is so disgusting...and so is this woman.
Hey I have a lot of common sense too. And I learn quickly; that's also true. Make me Secretary of State, please!
I think that Mrs. Bush could have a great career doing something on the line of what Clinton is doing with his global Initative, in some area that interest her...
