McCain camp issues its own account of talks with Obama

(CNN) - Less than an hour after Barack Obama's team told reporters that John McCain's Wednesday announcement that he would be suspending his campaign came after the Democratic nominee suggested a joint statement from both candidates on the financial crisis, the McCain camp issued its own account of talks between the two men.

"Senator Obama phoned Senator McCain at 8:30 am this morning but did not reach him," the campaign said in a memo sent to reporters. "The topic of Senator Obama’s call to Senator McCain was never discussed.

"Senator McCain was meeting with economic advisers and talking to leaders in Congress throughout the day prior to calling Senator Obama. At 2:30 pm, Senator McCain phoned Senator Obama and expressed deep concern that the plan on the table would not pass as it currently stands. He asked Senator Obama to join him in returning to Washington to lead a bipartisan effort to solve this problem."

Minutes after McCain's Wednesday statement, Obama's campaign said that the Democratic nominee had called McCain earlier that morning to ask him if he would be willing to issue a joint statement on the economy and "urg[e] Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal." They also said that McCain returned the call at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement, and that the two campaigns are currently "working together on the details." McCain's announcement came shortly before 3 p.m. ET.

Honestly! The American people really don't care who made the first phone call. I think it's great that both senators are actually considering going back to their day jobs, if just for a few days, because of something so important to the American peoplle. And, geez, can't they walk and chew gum at the same time. Why should the debate be postponed?? We all NEED to hear what they have to say, especially now.

  6. Debate the Economy!

Instead of cancelling the debate, how about we make it about the economy and this crazy bailout instead of foreign policy?

America has to hear what both candidates think and plan regarding the economy NOW, not later.

I am quite sure of what Obama plans.... vote Dem!

Opportunists suck! Like McCain is going to waltz back to Washington and make everything better. This is a bush league, populist move that smacks of a candidate 6-9 points down in the polls. All Obama or McCain will do if they return to Washington at this point in time is muddy the already murky waters.

  11. Stupid is as stupid does!

So let me get this straight...
McCain and Obama talk and say lets issue a joint statement
    Both parties agree
McCain hangs up the phone at 2:30
at 3:00 McCain says "I am suspending my campaign and I want Obama to do the same" making it seem like it was only his idea.

    Is he SERIOUS?

This is the same crap that got everyone in this freaking mess. CRAP. that's all it is. McCain talks out of both sides of his head. I didn't trust him before and now I don't even respect the old fart!

yes, lets have a moment of silence for our fallen economy. It has died and deserves the same respect as any other fallen comrade, so do you part as a proud american and sit down and keep your mouth shut, and let me run this political machine the way I want. and by the way, Palin is still off limits. yeehaw

This is about as believable as Sarah Palin's "Bridge to Nowhere" line. Or McCain's promises to run a decent and dignified campaign.

The cynicism and opportunism of the McCain campaign never ceases to amaze me. I guess this is one way to get the Rick Davis news off the front pages.

The thing about gimmicks is that people eventually see through them. You'd think McCain would have learned that after the Palin nomination. But I guess gimmicks are all he has. We need real solutions. We need President Obama!
