Polls show McCain, Obama nearly tied in Virginia

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/09/24/art.polls.gi.jpg caption="McCain holds a very narrow lead in Virginia."](CNN) - A new CNN poll of polls out of Virginia Wednesday shows John McCain with the slimmest of leads in what is a state that has traditionally been considered a safe bet for Republicans.

The latest round of polls could be a clear warning sign for McCain six weeks before Election Day that the Republican presidential nominee still has work to do to lock down certain states that previous GOP nominees had to spend little time or effort doing so.

In the latest poll of polls, the Arizona senator only holds a 1 point lead over Barack Obama (47-46 percent) while 7 percent remain undecided. The poll of polls is an average of three recent surveys of the state.

The Obama campaign has long targeted Virginia as part of their strategy to expand the electoral map, feeling it is virtually impossible for McCain to win the White House if the Illinois senator is victorious in traditionally red states.

Update: The McCain campaign held a conference call with reporters to give their view of recent poll trends Wednesday morning, including polling averages that show tight races in the most crucial battleground states.

Watch for new CNN polls out of Colorado, Montana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin at 4 p.m.!

I read a lot of mean spirited comments here from Obama supporters. Is that a reflection on Obama? I don't really care for such mean attitudes. If you need to name call and degrade, then it must be that you are uncomfortable with the issues. As a life long democrate, I am disgusted with this Obama campaign. I see it as just another egocentric guy pretending that he is some new and improved version of the same old stuff. The real problem is that Obama pretends to be different, to be rising above the fray, when in fact his is in the mud just like the rest of them. It seems I need to vote McCain to send a message of disgust.

This for "citizen" you wrote "I feel pity for you all OBAMA lovers – you deserve him if he wins!"

Pity .. can you tell me your particular reference to the word "pity" .. because the rest of the working world would not have used that word in that particular sentence. Just curious that's all. Explain yourself please. You wisdom eludes us all.

Young people don't vote. Never have, never will. Its always proven to be too inconvenient for them to get to the polls.

On the other hand...the older crowd ALWAYS votes.

This is probably a good thing, many young voters 18-25 will change their political leanings when they complete school and realize how oppressive the socialist aspects of our govt can be.

    young and liberal = naive
    old and liberal = hopeless

I can't believe how stupid democrats are.

They are still blaming Bush while the dems in the Senate are piling pork and earmarks ON TOP OF the $700 Billion.

They've been doing it for 2 years.

I guess we'll see if America is dumb enough to vote for democrats in November.

So the NY Times is slanted Democrat? What about Fox News? What about hate radio? What about Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly and Kudlow? The conservative consortium owns the radio and television airwaves. Are they mad they don't own print too?

Sounds like sour apples to me, killing the messenger.

  13. time for DEMOCRATS to fix the country

I hope Obama and Biden win on all issues.... and I can't believe people would still consider voting for McCain or Palin.

Republicans find one sentence that think they can use it to spin they campaign of distorted truth... and look at the world and economy now.... it would all fall into the same or worst scenario if we have Palin and McCain in the top office....

Biden talks about the issues, Palin just poses for the pictures... what is this? And the only reason people watch her is for they are amazed that this is happening...

Don't make comedy out of our lives...vote smart people!

Vincent, as a typical Republican, apparently, you are distorting the facts. Please check your facts (no, not on the Fox Noise Network or from Rush Limbaugh).

And Vincent, compared to McCain and Palin I would vote for my dog if he were running for president. Yes. Obama is the man to lead our country out of the mess that McCain and his friends have gotten us into. He can deny it all he wants, but he has been instrumental in the situation we are in today, both domestically and internationally. What is particularly laughable is that he is actually trying to blame this all on Obama. What an incredible putz. And Palin? She's ultimately forgettable, and other than a few chuckles, will be forgotten until the article hits the news that she's serving time.

  15. The Truth

TO MY FELLOW AMERICANS. DON'T ABUSE YOUR VOTE. THIS IS NOT EBAY WHERE YOU ARE SO CAUGHT-UP IN A BIDDING WAR YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN WHAT YOU ARE BIDDING ON. THE WINNER DECLARES VICTORY BUT LEAVES WITH A DUD. THIS IS NOT A HORSE RACE WHERE YOU ARE BETTING ON A HORSE JUST FOR THE SAKE OF WINNING. THIS ELECTION SHOULD BE MORE ABOUT THE MESSAGE THAN THE MESSENGER. IF YOU FOCUS ON THE ISSUES AND THE CRISIS WE FACE, THAN THE CHOICE IS CLEAR. OBAMA WILL WIN THAT ARGUMENT EVERYTIME.

It's not about blue or red... it's about keeping America safe and free. Do you really think that radical leaders will quiver when smooth-talking Obama sits down with them and says, "Can't we all just get along?" These leaders cannot be reasoned with and cannot be trusted. Americans need a President who has been tested and has proven himself strong and sure. Americans do NOT need a "media puppet". If Obama is elected, the freedom of our country will be compromised.

    Vote McCain-Palin 2008

Why are people soooooo impressed by Clinton's budget? If the government had a surplus, doesn't that mean that they were taking our taxes....and not giving them back? You rude little liberals need to get some facts before you go blame others for YOUR mistakes, and screw up our White House starting 2009.

    Wow.

Another democrat Socialist(Obama) solution for a democrat Socialist (Clinton) failure.

    When will this country learn??

This country cannot afford another Socialist democrat!!

P.S. Why is it that the CNN moderators only post things if you complain about how biased they are?? It's about a 10:1 ratio of ignorant Obama supporters to McCain supporters here and CNN keeps letting the trash-talking idiots supporting Obama through.

What is wrong with you CNN????

  22. R. Ross

The only warning anyone should heed is that CNN has become such a blatantly pro democrat mouthpiece that even an average observer gets sickened by your constant bias to Obama. Thank goodness for Lou Dobbs. He's the only person on your station that tells it like it is. The rest are as bad as the National Inquirer and none worse than the woman who comes on after Lou Dobbs. She should be whining on Entertainment Tonight. It is much better suited to her low-brow opinions.
