(CNN) - In what could be a bad sign for John McCain, more voters than ever before this election cycle feel the economy is the most important issue to their vote - a subject on which Barack Obama has consistently held an advantage.
According to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll, nearly 6 in 10 registered voters now say the economy is more important than any other issue - a number that is almost a double digit jump from a similar poll taken in July. And it's nearly double the 35 percent of voters who thought the economy was the No. 1 issue in January.
Meanwhile, the issue John McCain is strongest on - Iraq - has steadily declined in importance among voters. In the latest poll only 10 percent of registered voters say it is most important, down from 25 percent who felt it was most important in July.
The poll was conducted September 19-21, entirely after the crisis on Wall Street unfolded. It surveyed 909 registered voters and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
Let's flip the script for a second... If Obama pulled all of these stunts McCain has pulled, it would be a media circus and he would drop significantly in the polls. If Biden never gave interviews or welcomed questions from VOTERS during campaign rallies, the "sane" world would be all over it.. If Biden failed "approved" interviews and sounded like a middle school kid answering questions out of their league, he would be the laughing stock of the world.
So.... WHY IS IT ANY DIFFERENT WHEN IT IS MCCAIN AND PALIN? I bet my next paycheck (if I get one due since the fundamentals of our economics are so strong) Obama and Biden would not be getting away with this. What the McCain/Palin campaign is doing is a slap in our faces and a huge insult to the intelligence to all Americans.
I cannot believe that some American's are supporting this and seriously voting for this jerk!
The more I watchCNN, the more I am convinced I should vote Republican. This is true to almost any Democrat who supported Hillary Clinton I know.It is so sickining the way you treated Sarah Palin-You are just doing your job.GE is your parent company. And someone in GE is responsible for creating a horrible anti-McCain add.I am glad I watch Oreilly tonight. How about Obama and Ayers relationship? .How about Larry Sinclair? How about Rezco? How about his relationship with executives of Fannie Mae and Freedie Mac?There is no doubt that Fox news rating will go up beyond yours.I can now say they are Fair and Balance compare to CNN.
I am thinking, wow, am I the only one watching the news, ALL channels, reading the net, paying attention, listening to both candidates, checking the "reported" speeches on U-Tube.
Did anyone notice that the Republicans ran their convention on low-key out of respect for the hurricane situation and victims?
Did anyone notice Obama was pulling in $28,500 per plate and another $5000 to hear Ms. B sing THE DAY the bottom fell out.
Do you think he considered postponing it to a more appropriate day?
Has anyone noticed when there is a national crisis, the President shows up? He does not say "call me if you need me."
For McCain to insist he and Obama go to Washington and put the debate off, in my opinion, is showing leadership, responsiblility AND accountability. It shows he is comfortable about getting involved and getting the crisis solved. It shows his management style, which is obviously, HANDS ON and not just PRESENT. Another vote where Obama votes PRESENT! Unbelivable!
I would not expect anything less of John McCain.
Have you people NOT been listening to both men???
I could care less about the debates because I have watched and listened and read very carefully.
And, whomever the next President is, he sure the heck better know what is going on FIRSTHAND. For these two candidates NOT to be involved in this crisis is beyond me!
Actions speak louder than words.
Wake up America, this is not a dress rehersal.
This is a desperate gamble by the McCain camp. A gamble destined to fail.
McCain just further mortgaged America's future in order to further his political campaign. The transparency of this illusion further defines the McCain campaign as having no substance and of being fundamentally based on distracting the American people from the real problems we face.
I, for one, am tired of this kind of distraction.
Toss out ALL of the BS and answer one simple question to yourself... You only have two viable choices for President...
Only one of the two has repeatedly made thoughtful decisions over the past two years under close public scrutiny.
This is true whether or not you agree with the decisions made.
Trickle down economics do not work.
Stop the socialism crap. The American public has been mind conditioned to vote against the common man to benefit the top 2%.
The best part of Obama's plan is putting Americans back to work. I want more than anything to see jobs for my fellow Americans that benefit the country, and generates consumer spending.
Join me in voting for the sane, thoughtful, intelligent guy.
Go Obama/Biden 08!
Red33, I have to respond to your comment in particular. Once again, a McCain supporter/Obama detractor uses the "socialism" talking point.
Two things about that:
First of all, what do you think the bailout proposed by the Bush Administration really is? It's socialism.
Secondly, do you not realize that many European countries, socialist countries, are in much better shape than we are? They offer their citizens better healthcare, better education, better standards of living, higher life expectancies, lower infant mortality rates, lower poverty rates, and lower suicide rates? I don't believe that Obama will take us to socialism, but socialism ain't such a bad thing.
The American people are looking forward to today's FIRST SCHEDULED PRES.DEBATE.
Americans want to see each candidate debate THEIR PLANS & VISION TO MOVE FORWARD , ESP.w/ the economic/ financial crisis our country is in.
If Mccain is a NO SHOW to tonight's scheduled debate – his chance of being voted & gaining votes as a FUTURE LEADER of our Country is VERY… VERY…POOR !
He is better off not run for the President's seat.
MCCAIN's ODD & FLIP FLOP actions are very disturbing folks!
He is a definite MESS & a DISTRUCTION to the Ameican public.
*he is no maverick as he claims*
(that of course depends what his definition of maverick).
Senator Reid agrees with all of us, McCain comes in to score political points.
Schumer is another one who told McCain to get out of town. What does McCain know about the economy? zip!
