Obama: There needs to be a sense of urgency

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/09/25/art.obama.whitehouse.jpg caption="Sen. Obama returned to Washington Thursday to discuss the bailout plan."]
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama said lawmakers will eventually agree on a bailout plan but said that there needs to be a "sense of urgency for everybody."

Watch: Sen. Obama says there needs to be a sense of urgency

Obama told CNN after a White House meeting that some progress was made Thursday but he was concerned that the attendance of the two presidential hopefuls in the negotiations could cause problems.

Watch: Congress reaches bailout deal?

"I've been concerned for some time that when you start interjecting presidential politics into delicate negotiations, you could actually create more problems than less," Obama said. "It is amazing what you can get done when the cameras are not on and people are not looking to get credit or allocate blame."

McCain is an arse! He totally derailed the progress with his grandstanding. He wasn't putting country first. He was putting his pitiful campaign first. How sick can you be?

Wow, just reading the right wingers on this board is amazing.

Obama is the one who is putting country first. McCain is looking to make a big splash so he can stay in the race. The election is 6 weeks away. I want to hear these guys debate on what needs to be done. There is urgency but the business of the country needs to go on. This issue can be handled even if Obama and McCain are elsewhere.

Mark–the blame is exactly where it needs to be. The banks did not have to write these mortgages but their greed got the better of them. Now, they want the US taxpayer to bail them out for their own stupidity.

McCain doesn't know how to multitask. That's why he won't do the debates. He's having a hard time breathing and walking at the same time !

McCain doesn't care about the country at all, only about getting elected.

You morons ragging on Obama are getting this wrong. Obama does not want the negotiations to turn into a circus with he said she said. If it is so smart to have the presidential nominees there, than why didn't anything get done due to the fact that they were both there? McSame is just trying to create chaos because he is losing.

People should realize this is a political pulled by the McCain campaign. His ads are still running across the country. McCain's surrogates i.e Tucker Bounds, etc..) did not "suspend" their condescending commentary and staffers on the ground continued their work all across the nation.

Here's a question: Why didn't McCain "suspend" his campaign when Hurricane Ike hit Texas?

    Ben:
How on earth is cancelling the debate going to make one shred of difference? Each candidate has a personal plane that can fly them to and fro in a matter of hours.
Get real, this is a grown up presidential race with candidates who are expected to behave as grown ups.
So maybe you should try being a grown up too.

McCain has not suspended his campaign...credulity, yes...but not the campaign. He's posturing on his soap box every minute and doesn't care what happens to America, as long as he emerges victorious. What a fraud

SUPSEND HIS CAMPAIGN? You're kidding me right? What exactly does that mean? McCain cancelled his appearance on Letterman last night saying he had to rush back to Washington...but later Letterman showed a live feed of McCain doing an interview with Katie Couric in New York at the SAME time he was supposed to be at Letterman

So what exactly does suspend his campaign really mean anyways? His ads were still running today. He's still doing interviews. He's working from his office...on what I don't know. Obama is also there in Washington and he hasn't "suspended" his campaign. If McCain can't take a note from Obama and do more than one thing at a time, how does he expect to run this country?

leadership is doing something about the problem and not waiting for someone else to do it for you. Get some cojones Obama and have the courage to challenge your own party. Own up to it man.

McCain is the leader we need in these critical times. Not some namby pamby wanna be leader with no leadership experience.

  14. Swing State Voter

A week ago, McCain said the economy was fine. Why is he all of the sudden so certain of collapse? Why was the problem ignored for months on end by the current administration, only to be finally acknowledged right before an important debate? So McCain can back out and avoid addressing issues with Obama. Because McCain is suffering in the polls. Because McCain needs a chance to show up someplace and make it look like he's capable of handling domestic issues.

Obama and McCain do not belong in Washington until a vote is called for; until then, their jobs are to be presenting their vastly different ideals to the American public. The debate is just one of those venues. If McCain refuses to show, he's a fool.

This isn't the first time McCain has dodged a debate. Case in point, California, primaries, 2000. He did the exact same thing again. It is also noted that he has NOT STOPPED CAMPAIGNING!

Let's face facts people anybody voting for McCain is got to be crazy. Give me one fact on McCain record that you like. He stated the issues was fine last week now it is the end of the world. It is a fact some people are dumb so I guess McCain can have your vote

yeah sure, the urgency of Obama being elected president.. anything else? What exactly does he propose?

  19. Concerned Voter

I agree with Obama. Bush and McCain are playing political games, and I hate to say this, but only people who are dumber than they are will fall for this. McCain had no intentions of the bailout plan being finished by Friday. McCain wanted the debates moved, and that's that. Now, McCain wants to try and be the hero again, and save the day through political upstaging. This is as old as McCain.

  20. Obama

Obama is the one who is afraid to debate – he would not attend one Townhall meeting with McCain.

You think he is a leader because he would rahter do a debte than help solve a serious financial problem that faces us. A debate on foreign policy to boot.

Obama does not want to have to make a decision that is what the problem is.

    Darko & Mike, Syracuse NY,

IT IS AMAZING HOW MANY PEOPLE ACTUALLY THING THIS BAILOUT WOULD NOT HAPPEN IF OBAMA AND MCCAIN CONTINUED TO CAMPAIGN. I THINK NOT. THE BAILOUT WOULD HAVE OCCURRED WITHOUT ALL THE SPOTLIGHT. NOW WITH THE SPOTLIGHT EVERYBODY WANTS TO SHINE... IT IS JUST HUMAN NATURE!!!

ALSO AS COMMANDER IN CHIEF, YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE SEVERAL THINGS AT ONCE. SO IF MCCAIN IS ELECTED AND TWO PROBLEMS ARISE, HE WILL SIMPLY SUSPEND ACTION ON ONE TO ATTEND TO THE OTHER! I HOPE THE HECK NOT AS WE WOULD BE WORST OFF THAN THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION!!!!!

I am so disappointed in the media. After this election, I will no longer watch television or read a newspaper. THE MEDIA NEED TO START CALLING JOHN MCCAIN OUT FOR ALL OF HIS POLITICAL STUNTS. I KNOW IF OBAMA DID THIS, HE WOULD BE FORCED OUT OF THE COUNTRY! I am sick of McCain and all of his political stunt. They were close to a deal until McCain. This has been going on for weeks, WHERE HAS HE BEEN? I have news for McCain, the American people are not that STUPID! The media cannot talk to Sarah Palin, the media cannot talk to McCain. I am wondering, why is he running for president?

McCain authored the bill to rein in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2006 – what did Obama do except be the 2nd highest recepient of those two entities lobbyist money. Dodd # 1 got himself and his friends very low interest rates on loans – on the take too.
McCain had a plan a week ago on the rescue, then he suggested
    meeting today...
Obama – still twiddling his thumbs, talk and talk and more talk.
