Palin: Russia's my next door neighbor

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/09/25/art.palinfighters0925.ap.jpg caption="Gov. Palin visited with firefighters near the World Trade Center in New York City Thursday."]
(CNN) - Sarah Palin defended the claim that Alaska’s proximity with Russia helps bolster her foreign policy resume in an interview released Thursday.

The Republican VP nominee, asked by CBS’s Katie Couric what she meant by that statement said: “That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land - boundary that we have with - Canada.

“…our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of,” said Palin.

The Alaska governor, asked if she had ever engaged in negotiations with Russia, said the country had swapped trade missions with her state. “It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border,” she said.

“It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to our state."

Palin has spent the week meeting with foreign leaders in New York, as she seeks to boost her national security and foreign policy credentials.

  2. Appalled!

Everyone should see the actual video of this incredibly simplistic woman answering Katie's serious questions. She is appallingly ill informed and came across worse than W at his worst. It's shocking she is in the running for a position of such power and is such an ignoramus.
I've never seen someone in such a high position be so incredibly ill prepared. She didn't even appear to understand her own answers and was so incoherent it was alarming to watch.

I do not know what kind of role Sarah Palin is seeking in the fact th at Alaska is next to Russia and Canada. Did she bring those two countries next to her state? Hey, I was born and raised in Nepal, spent two years serving LDS mission in India, have crossed Shino-Nepal border, f;ew over South-eastern Asian countries, spent a nights in Singapore and toured the Philippines for a month. Look, my foreign (policy) experience is bigger than hers. Should I have been vetted for John McCain's VP? Well, I would have disqualified anyway. I am not a beauty queen and as Zardari said, not 'gorgeous'.

  6. Let's Play "Hide the Palin"

Forget about the VP debate, folks. McCain is needed in D.C. to save our country. So, no debate tomorrow – sorry about that 5 million dollars Mississippi – and the VP debate, next Thursday, will become the first presidential debate.

well it's nice to know that Palin-Barbie doll knows where Alaska is on a map!! other than that she is clueless! Couric did a very good interview it's too bad Katie had to keep redirecting Palin back to answer the question..

It is obvious that the ONLY reason McMcain went to Wasington is to attempt to use it to further his campaign & use the bail out as a excuse to get out of the Pres debate..
He's doing nothing more than stirring up trouble in Washington. There was more progress being made before Mccain showed up to so called be involved. The Savior of the Financial bail out..GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
It blows my mind to know that there are Americans out there who would for vote the Rep ticket...This should be a Reality show it would get good ratings but unfortunately THIS IS REAL ...

Please people use your head and vote for Obama...

I've lived in New York and Texas. Does that give me foreign credentials with Canada and Mexico? If so, I would like to put that on my resume.

I find it so insulting to the AMerican people for Palin to say that Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her some form of foreign policy credentials. If that's the best they can do, they are definitely in trouble.

  12. Give me a break!

I know everything about my neighbors to the right and my neighbors to the left. I've never been inside of their homes, but I can see their houses. Even though the borders are clear, I can still see.

Once, when I was, like, 34, my neighbors to the right received some of my mail and I received some of theirs. I noticed this (because I can read) and by the time I was ready to go drop off their mail, I already had a package on my front stoop that was labeled, "YOUR MAIL (DELIVERED TO OUR HOUSE BY MISTAKE)." I sent my son to give their mail to them. I felt good and responsible making that trade. Good and responsible!

Sometimes my son briefs me on what he sees when he crosses through their backyard on his way to school. BAD PEOPLE THEY ARE! Once, they yelled at him for "being nosey and butting in to their business." Yeah, right! Like keeping an eye on them is butting in! (Such uncivilized morons!)

Anyway, I know all about my neighbors because THEY ARE RIGHT THERE NEXT TO ME!

    POST THIS CNN!

  17. Troubled and highly concerned voter

Palin's statement about monitoring US air space out of Alaska is indicative of her "doe in the headlight" approach to all. She is of a typical provincial mind and is only appealing to those people who also have difficulty seeing beyond there own backyards. I would not trust her as far as I could throw her.

  23. Palin = not even qualified to lead Alaska

    Re: Ella

"and… Obama has foreign experience from the time he was five years old in Indonesia attending some school or another…."

All I have to say is that Obama can answer question without sounding like a babbling idiot. He is also a member of the Foreign Relations Committee

Anyway, judgment is important here, people. McCain's poor judgment is evident in his choice for Palin as VP, his stance on the Iraq war, his "fundamentals" statement, etc, etc, etc. Palin also lacks judgment -She lacks the judgment to know that this she is not ready for this VP position. Heck, she doesn't even have the judgment to have learn that this IS NOT foreign policy experience. The only piece of good judgment shown by the Palin-McCain (I mean, McCain-Palin) campaign has been to hide this woman from the media because they know she is not ready to answer "such difficult questions". laughable.....

I find it very hard to believe that Putin has ever flown over Alaskan airspace as Palin said in the Couric interview. Here's why...

    1. When Putin came to the US in July 2007, he met Bush in the state closest to Moscow...Maine. The NY Times article at the time says he landed his jet in Portsmouth, NH, which means he would have to have flown over the Atlantic.

    2. All commercial flights from Moscow to the US and Canada fly over the Atlantic...even to LA (lookup Aeroflot's route map)

    3. The 2001 Crawford, TX Bush-Putin summit began in Washington, proving yet another trans-Atlantic flight.

I'm happy to take back this statement if anyone finds proof.
