Palin: Russia's my next door neighbor

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/09/25/art.palinfighters0925.ap.jpg caption="Gov. Palin visited with firefighters near the World Trade Center in New York City Thursday."]
(CNN) - Sarah Palin defended the claim that Alaska’s proximity with Russia helps bolster her foreign policy resume in an interview released Thursday.

The Republican VP nominee, asked by CBS’s Katie Couric what she meant by that statement said: “That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land - boundary that we have with - Canada.

“…our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of,” said Palin.

The Alaska governor, asked if she had ever engaged in negotiations with Russia, said the country had swapped trade missions with her state. “It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border,” she said.

“It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to our state."

Palin has spent the week meeting with foreign leaders in New York, as she seeks to boost her national security and foreign policy credentials.

oh my goodness you have got to be kidding me.
the first time i heard this, i have foreign policy experience 'cause i can see russia from home, i thought- what a putz. i'll bet she won't go down that road again.
well she went down that road again!
her statements continue to give validity to- "vote for mccain and hope he doesn't die in office!"
at the start of this campaign mccain was my guy. but he has become what he ridiculed for years. i heard him on the radio at the start of the iraq war (which has gone on longer than ww II) saying how irresponsible it was to lower taxes while fighting a war, can't be done. now he wants to make temp cuts permanent?
and he picks this woman to be his vp????
    give me obama!!!

I have voted for the republican candidate for the past 5 or 6 elections. This coming election, however, I will proudly cast my vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden, not because of what I fear from McCain and Palin, but because of what I know Obama and Biden will bring to this country in such a despairing time.

    Obama/Biden '08.

Never thought I'd be voting as a democrat. Ever.

She is just a waste of our brain usage

Come on, this isn't funny anymore...
swapped trade missions with her? huh?
meeting with foreign leaders in New York,,,
(just swapped baby talk and moose stew recipes)
Every student who's gone to Cancun for spring break
can add foreigh experience to their resume.
I think she is ready to debate Obama in McCain's stead.
She is ready if needed to replace him, right?

If Johnny M. gets elected his personal health and well-being will become the number one concern of just about everyone in the world. Personally, I'll probably be whispering "please don't die" under my breath for four straight years.

This woman is an ignorant nutcase.

This VP is a joke. McBush sent her to New York this week for a photo op. How stupid does he think we (the voters) are. This VP selection was the act of desperation. McCain wasn't wanted by his own Party. and he had to do something. I kind of feel sorry for her...she was used.

The reason me and so many Americans love this lady, she just so smart and down to earth....I'm a former democrat and she is just the biggest breath of fresh air I have seen in years! McCain/Palin 08

She may be a nice lady and a good mother but when it comes to Russia she and McCain scare me. Russia is not Iran, it is not Iraq, we are talking about a country that still has enough nuclear firepower to lay waste to the entire North American Continent. We are talking about a country that has threatened to nuke Poland should we deploy our missile defense system.

If McCain/Palin have their way, they would alienate Russia, push them off the world stage. Palin has already made it clear that she would support a shooting war with Russia if needed. That is suicide for mankind so support McCain/Palin if you wish, I will never support any candidate who doesn't seem to understand the unthinkable consequences of a shoot war with Russia.

Please, we need some leadership. I was a McCain supporter (mad about is it but yes I was) When he picked Palin I was done! No thank you McCain you just lost all respect I had for you. I tried to be open minded and wanted to see what Palin was all about, but I can tell you I have NEVER been so unimpressed as I am now about her being #2 on the ticket. It's a shame really, she may have been okay in a few years IF she had some more real world experiance. Sorry I have always been a registered Republican but consider myself in the middle. I would never vote for someone just becaues of how I am registered. I get so emberessed when Republican's "speak out" about how excited they are about Palin. What a joke.

    To Christine
I love how so many are mocking this, but if you think about it, given our history with Russia and the all-too-recent Cold War, it's very important for the Governor of Alaska to maintain impeccably up-to-date with anything going on there. Because, as this post states, Alaska is a very large and very important border to keep an eye on

Please give it up girl. I have never been so emberssed in my life, and I am a long time Republican.

I'm not going to take it anymore.

Obama has almost 2 years of campaigning, Palin has 1 month. Obama runs for President, Palin for VP. Does anybody remember how The One used to stumble until Hillary taught him to talk?

WOW! That was painful to watch. I would have paid good money to have been inside Katie Couric's head during that train wreck of an interview. Palin is mind-numbingly stupid. My cat knows more about foreign affairs! I'm not even sure if Palin knows anything about the Middle East situation. Good guys....bad guys....what is this the third grade? Oh, yeah, well I bet my daddy can beat up your daddy! Sweetheart, do the world a favor, and go back to the tundra! We are not interested!

The way she smugly answers her own question with "It's Alaska" reminds me of the SNL skit "Da Bulls". Not sure if I'm more outraged or embarressed by her presence on the ticket.
