Palin: Russia's my next door neighbor

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/09/25/art.palinfighters0925.ap.jpg caption="Gov. Palin visited with firefighters near the World Trade Center in New York City Thursday."]
(CNN) - Sarah Palin defended the claim that Alaska’s proximity with Russia helps bolster her foreign policy resume in an interview released Thursday.

The Republican VP nominee, asked by CBS’s Katie Couric what she meant by that statement said: “That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land - boundary that we have with - Canada.

“…our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of,” said Palin.

The Alaska governor, asked if she had ever engaged in negotiations with Russia, said the country had swapped trade missions with her state. “It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border,” she said.

“It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to our state."

Palin has spent the week meeting with foreign leaders in New York, as she seeks to boost her national security and foreign policy credentials.

I thought the campaign was suspended. Probably would have been a good idea to suspend it BEFORE the Couric-Palin interview.

Everyone agreed that before the election, the selection of the vp candidate was the most presidential decision that they would make. Is it now safe to say mccain has failed miserably in making his choice?

And this woman might be a "heart-beat-away" from the Presidency???
Talk about putting fear into the American people! If the Repubs think this is "experience" and "security", then I have missed the original boat that brought imigrants to America in the late 1800's! This woman is truly DANGEROUS!

I saw that clip. It's not as bad as I expected.

    It's way, way worse.

I was willing to give Palin the benefit of the doubt. Basically sharp lady, hostile press and so on. But this wasn't "gotcha". This was Kouric asking "what did you mean by that?" and she just plain couldn't spit out an answer. About something she herself said. She kept taking quick little looks down, to her crib notes I guess, but that didn't seem to help her.

Folks, if someone's going to tell me they're ready to take over as president of the United States at any moment for the next four years, I want to know that they can answer a simple question.

She doesn't really answer questions and has yet to buiild a case that she is fit to be our next V-P. I think McCain is going to develop a bad case of buyer's remorse when the VP debate nears. He's already trying to get it postponed.

Why does she keep saying that?

Does she really not realize how stupid it sounds?

Thought there would be a million Palin jokes by now. But there aren't any.

If you think about it, McCain refusing to debate and wanting to change the debate schedule to cancel Palin's scheduled debate, it just unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman. It also kind of juvenile when McCain won't play with Obama unless he plays by McCain's rules.

Don't know about you, but I think I'm going to vote for the grown-up.

And the Governors of Texas have to constantly trade with Mexico – and guess where that foreign policy psuedo-experience got us ...

    George W. Bush!!!

    Thanks, Palin. But no thanks!

Dear Sarah, please for the sake of sanity, try to come up with coherent and complete sentences. Hope that is not too much.

    Regards.

How many of you saw Katie Couric ask Palin POINT BLANK " What are some good things John McCain has done in his tenure" she just looked at Couric and said "I will have to get back to you on that one" can you people actually believe this? She disagrees with Obama and says McCain's plan is better but yet she cant even name 1 SINGLE THING that McCain has done after she just said he had a great track record? OMG.....GIVE ME A BREAK!

I just don't have words to say. It is truly unbelievable that this woman is the V.P. Russian planes fly over Alaska so that gives her foreign policy experience? This is too sad to be funny. Wake me up from this nightmare, PLEASE!

Sarah is picking up where Hillary left off–except Sarah is much, much tougher. If Obama messes with her too much, she'll stick an M-16 up his nose and he'll wet his pants, the woos.

This kind of crap would only fly with Palin.

Maybe it's the demographic she appeals to: the Religious Right, who actually, truly believe that dinosaurs roamed the earth 4000 years ago and that god will hate you if you use a condom.

Maybe that's the reason she can get away with actually trying to use her state's proximity to Russia to bolster her foreign policy resume. To the above-mentioned demographic, this probably makes perfect sense.

"Hey, I'm Sarah Palin. I've only been outside of the U.S. once, but hey, my state is REALLY REALLY close to Russia, so it's not as though I don't know what's at stake here. I'VE GOT A GREAT MIND!"

Taking this article into consideration then realy Palin has experience that Obama and Biden do not have. Go Palin!

Really?! Hasn't she realized that this is the statement that earned her the aura of incompetence?

I live in El Paso, and I'm far from a diplomat to Mexico, and I know I'm much closer than Alaska is to Russia.

Sarah Palin, give up this argument, you can't possibly win, and I'm sure that your claim that you've swapped trade missions with Russia will soon be debunked.

Oh yeah, you talking tough about Putin and him "rearing his head" is far from being diplomatic...but hey, if you manage to start WWIII Alaska will be the first to defend the rest of us right?

Let me see, With that thinking, then Arnold S, as the Gov of Calif is light years ahead of Palin to be VP on this ticket, as Calif is a huge Maritime port with LA and is right next door to Mexico with San Diego, does that make him an expert on World concerns and give him the expertise to meet with the Mexican goverment on subjects from Oil to Drug trade – I think not.

Why is it that the media of all sides...right and left are not alarmed by the answers she gives and question her on them! I am a woman and I am highly insulted that she acts as if she is representing "all" women who vote.

    "Thanks but NO Thanks"

So, if you live in Florida or Hawaii, you're completely ignorant of anything about Russia since you live so far away from it.

Palin's ignorance and justifications for her ignorance are stunning! By her definition, all the governors of states sharing borders with Canada and Mexico are foreign policy experts! The more she talks, the more it becomes clear how totally unqualified she is to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency of the United States.

Is she speaking in tongues? That makes no sense.

God help the USA if this woman becomes President. I agree with Paul Begala. We need to start a national effort right now to send vitamins to John McCain.
