OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) - Sen. John McCain, the Republican candidate for president, said Friday he would seriously consider freezing all government spending except for defense and care of veterans.

Sen. Barack Obama, his Democratic opponent, said that would be "using a hatchet where you need a scalpel."

McCain is rash and unthinking in his response. I cannot believe that he is saying the things he is. Did he learn nothing this week?

Spending freezes combined with tax increases on ordinary Americans is a recipe for disaster! Remove the safety net and then push people overboard. Unforgivable.

Perfect response by Obama on this......it's "using a hatchet to fix a problem that needs a scalpel".

That comment shows McCain lacks the ability to handle this.

Before you can move forward, you lock down the $$$$$$$ gather the country back on track then start your spending again. We can't afford any additional spending. WE ARE BROKE

So only spend money on the army? That displays his war monger attitude. What about the programs we need to get our economy turned around and alternative fuel. This guy doesn't care about the little people at all. He's treating the government like a giant corporation, just like Bush. Spending freeze??? That's corporate talk.

    John McCain,

Please tell us in detail what a "win" is in Irag and/or Afganistan.
What is a victory? Is it an event or years of our presence in these countries?

    Thanks you.

That freeze is how Reagan started his presidency. Reagan also sought tax cuts and weapons spending increases that could not reconcile. McCain is a Reagan follower, or believer as it were, that is not good for America. Reagan was wrong, McCain is wrong!

Senator McCain – – look no further than the Defense Department if you want to cut costs and waste – – commit to a selective troop withdrawl bringing U.S forces in Iraq down to 35,000 troops and shift 20,000 troops over to Afghanistan to get the real target – UBL. The economy can only begin to recover once we limit our involvement in Iraq.
